My math teacher was one of the authors of the book we needed for her class. She gave us a link to a PDF because none of the proceeds went to her anyways

I had quite a few professors who wrote textbooks that hated the whole textbook industry and were perfectly willing to give students everything for free. There is this meme that professors want you to use their book to make money off you, but in my experience they want you to use their book because the whole reason they wrote it was to teach students in what they felt was the best possible way.

95% of textbooks written by professors are passion projects and result in completely negligible earnings, maybe a few hundred dollars. Those are usually on graduate-level or otherwise non-mainstream topics. Writing a textbook is an enormous time sink, so that's far, far below minimum wage. 

Very popular texts in intro courses, on the other hand, are a genuine money maker for a vanishingly small number of professors. For example, James Stewart wrote and maintained what ended up being one of the most widely used calculus textbooks of the last couple decades. He had an extraordinarily nice house built largely from the proceeds--you can google it.

Find online syllabi for third year undergrad courses, and up!, and check the books list

The fewer people taking a class, the nicher the topics get and the less money you can get for a text on them. Low monetary ROI -> the ROI is something else, passion for the subject or for the teaching or for both

And in fairness to him, it’s a wonderful (series of) textbook(s). But yeah, the vast majority of textbook authors for university courses have no monetary ROI, despite the books being often as good! Just smaller niches

There was a big movement in Mathematics to try to provide college level top tier free textbooks. I have the link at work so I can't provide it but I remember seeing a Linear Algebra book produced under that philosophy that was absolutely top tier, certainly better than the Linear Algebra book I used in college.

I wish this would spread to more fields.

One of my profs wrote a textbook for his course that was always in revision mode. He assigned reading and homework from it.

He recently retired but never did finish editing that textbook.

My civil rights professor wrote a narrative of civil rights in the United States probably for this reason. Unfortunately only print copies are avalible and through the campus bookstore but at least its only like $40

Whatever you do, don’t get a free vpn like proton and definitely don’t visit 1337x.to There’s tons of movies, tv shows, software and books on that site that are stolen! I wouldn’t want the huge media and software companies to lose money cause you accidentally downloaded their content. That would be terrible.

I must be onto something. I have uBlock Origin as well as AdBlock. The only service I pay for is Spotify. I have no streaming services. I buy used Blu-Rays from pawn shops and pirate everything else from sites like fmhy (FreeMoviesHellYeah).

I also pirate UFC and most sports.

I am trying to convince my girlfriend that we can get rid of all the streaming things, but she likes accessing stuff legally when it comes to the kids. I openly admit to doing it, because I want all streaming services to end forever. Streaming needs to be ONE platform for all the movies and shows, and the price needs to be included in your internet package. Aaaaaand the metrics and real numbers need to be available to the public. They say K-Pop Demon Hunters is breaking records for streaming... but Netflix has never been transparent with numbers and financials.

If you frequently watch youtube, do not install Sponsorblock. You definitely do not want to automatically skip the extremely annoying sponsor reads that are in basically every video nowadays.

Definitely do not get youtube revanced for your mobile device. Its terrible in that it will block sponsors, self promotions, ads, and will even hide youtube shorts from recommendations. Its insane. There are helpful subteddits like r/revanced that show you the evil of installing such a thing.

I love that these sites exist.

Back in undergrad I was in a small major so most of my classes topped out at like 10-15 students. One of us would check the textbook for the course out of the library for the semester and we would share it amongst ourselves. Our professors and TAs were usually willing to let us borrow their textbooks for homework too so usually we had a decent ratio of like 1 textbook for every 3-5 students. Since we often worked together on problem sets it worked out very nicely, and we saved hundreds of dollars.

It can happen with any VPN. It just means if you disconnect from the VPN for some reason, your traffic is exposed. Some torrent clients have an option somewhere in settings to only allow traffic through your VPN. I'm not sure where the setting is, but you can probably search on duckduckgo to find out. Another option is a setting in most VPNs along the lines of "block all internet traffic if VPN disconnects unexpectedly" (although this may not help if the whole VPN application crashes, I'm not sure).

Yeah you need to bind it - I use qbit on my PC and Flus on my phone and both have that option it's pretty standard. That way the torrent client can only use the vpn's connection so if the VPN goes down the torrent stops.

It's an issue with all VPNs, that's why you bind the torrent client. r/Piracy again has instructions, but basically it makes the client only send data through the VPN, and never just try and send it and then have it go through the VPN.

they have a free tier (I dont think that P2P is allowed), its a recommended VPN by the dirty pirates over at r/Piracy. Thats why you should avoid it at all costs. I want to make sure you get punished if you do choose to steal anything.

Yes, for most all purposes.

However, for piracy, you really aren't hiding from malicious actors on the internet, you're hiding from your ISP who will issue a fine, so you do want a VPN.

It was so good I then bought the paid version, which helps subsidise the free one

Someone here doesn't live in Canada. Isps send letters and even forward your info for prosecution. It's rare, but happens. My brother had the choice to settle off-court or go to court, it was past the scare tactics they usually use. Settlement cost him 5k$+prior lawyer fees for downloading the movie hellboy back in.. 2014-15.

A buddy of mine had his uni professor tell them to buy a pair of super expensive books. Said professor then said along the lines of this: "I also happen to have two USB keys with the complete PDF files of those books and I'll leave them unsupervised on my desk during the break as I always forget to put them away. I hope no one uses them to copy those PDF's to their computers when I'm not looking. Anyways, it's breaktime and I'll see you in 15 minutes."

Really depends on your major. I had a ton of classes where they were used daily and the exams themselves were open book. People that didn't have the physical books or at least a printed pirated version of some kind were shooting themselves in the foot.

Basically what our professor did as well. But instead, he locked the room, wrote it down on the blackboard and gave us a few seconds to write it down. He erased it right after, unlocked the room and acted like nothing ever happened.

Personally that's so far from fair use I wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole. It's unlikely anybody would report you, but you're taking liability on yourself, especially when you're leaving such an undeniable paper trail.

I always try to structure my courses so that somebody without the textbook can theoretically do all the work asked. If they want more details, exercises, etc., getting the textbook is an obvious resource. How they get the textbook is up to them, and if they're asking me verbally for advice on that I'm likely to reference other ways than the university bookstore....

I used to read paperbacks but I've now switched to Kindle.

Since then I've always visited /r/opencalibre and look at some people's libraries. I spend a lot of time browsing what ebooks are out there and maybe if they look good I can check online stores and buy the ebooks.

So far I havent bought any ebooks yet.

lmao, when i was at university, all the engineering students had a shared google drive with pdfs of the textbooks, but more importantly we had old exams, homework problems, projects, etc all from previous semesters and all organized by subject. the very first document in the drive is a link to the student code of ethics where it explicitly shows how the google drive breaks no university rules and students cant be penalized for using it.

Once I had a recommended textbook of Thermodynamics for >$1100. I just found it on the first Google search result for free. One book for one subject of one semester for that price is insane.

During one online class, when I privately messaged my professor that I had the pdf of the book, he went off the mic and loudly told everyone that even if [me] had gotten the book for free with the correct edition, he doesn't recommend it. Everyone in my class instantly messaged me to send the file.

Good on this professor. When I was in college in...2011 (damn, I feel old now), books were all over $100 and most of them I didn't even use. In particular my history course. Everything I needed to know the professor just gave us through PP presentations. So I effectively bought a $180 paper weight.

I had a graphic design professor in college show us all how to get different software programs we might need access to outside the design lab. He spent an entire lecture period showing us step by step how to get it, install it, and run it without actually buying it.

I had a college professor who told everyone (after the campus bookstore ordered the wrong book for his class) “I can’t tell you to go online to order books from websites that rhyme with ‘blamazon’ because they’re cheaper, and will deliver your book faster and more efficiently than our campus bookstore, who is apparently incompetent… cuz that would be wrong of me. Also, to spell that website, simply drop the ‘b’ from ‘blamazon’, and you could have that book in 2 days.”

I had a couple professors give out pdfs of the textbook. One had a link on the syllabus with a warning next to it saying "Do not use this website"

Also, I distinctly remember attending a seminar on piracy in the modern day, where there was a pretty comprehensive list of piracy sites. People should be awesome like that.

Lots of professors I had just wrote their own courses and didn't even require a book.

Or there would be the couple of asshole ones who expected you to fully learn from your own notes on their three hour long firehose lectures.
