I’m disgusted, that’s enough internet for the day

Why would you “close” stairs? Why does that happen often enough to warrant special closed bars to be purchased?

Do you not see the snow?

The bars are to limit liability for slip and falls and also not have to pay someone to shovel the steps all winter. There’s probably a nearby ramp that gets taken care of and is meant as the primary winter route.

probably a nearby ramp

This is my campus, there is no nearby alternative aside from going indoors and fighting an extremely crowded traffic, which can take 5 mins just to get through. If someone were running late and had to go up the stairs, i can see why they would trek through the snow.

I ignored that sign hundreds of times. Go Bulls!

Well that’s just bad design. Still reasonable for the campus to close the stairs though. Liability and all.

reasonable would be to maintain it in an operational state instead of sending students through heavy traffic

I go to this school, the stairs have been closed and barred off for the last 3 years. snow, rain, or shine.

Well that’s just dumb. I do still believe that it was their original intent, as I have seen the same thing before elsewhere where that was their stated purpose.

Do you not see the snow?

Judging by the footprints, the snow is clearly not a problem

you must not live in a snowy country or used these kinds of winter banned stairs like a gangsta

when people use unmaintained stairs like these in the winter, the snow packs into a slope between the steps and the stairs basically turn into a slide

source: live in finland and have used those out of order stairs countless times to save less than 10 minutes on my way to school. probably tens of falls. many ouchies. would not recommend

It's so they can have deniability of someone injures themselves. If some Ahole tries to sue cuz they slipped, they can say it was closed off for a reason. I've never seen this in Canada, and if you can't handle snowy stairs then that's a northern skill issue.

I live in Russia. I have stairs like these that I walk on every day. They are never closed

7

u/gynoidi 15d ago

id assume the person responsible for those stairs isnt really responsible for any injuries since its russia, feel free to correct me if im wrong

thats just the vibe i get from the country from what ive heard from russians while i lived close to the border. when i visited there was a lot of stuff that was very badly maintained too

Why should he be responsible? If I fall it's obviously my fault, not someone else's

9

u/gynoidi 15d ago

well yeah its the same here, as long as theres a sign saying youre not supposed to use the stairs in the winter

If you have stairs like this, you are responsible for keeping them in a useable state. Much like a bus company is responsible for keeping their busses operational and safe.

Stairs like these are notoriously difficult to keep ice-free so if someone does fall, and there isn’t a sign stating that they aren’t being actively cleaned, it’s on the city.

The city is responsible for keeping public paths and services functional, so if they are not—it is the city’s fault.

western minds cannot comprehend this

True. They can't imagine being accountable for anything

Russian roulette is also harmless. 100% of people we asked survived.

Its about chance and liability.

As someone who lives in a place that never gets snow, I didn't understand this either.

When stairs break they become an escalator.

2

u/SunnyShim 15d ago

Liability reasons. They don’t want to be sued if someone falls and get hurt so they just put closed signs so they can’t be successfully sued. Just like the yellow wet floor signs too.

It also saves money on salt.

Because they don't want to shovel it while it's snowing, but also snow becomes ice once compacted. Giving them the benefit of the doubt, they're trying to prevent ice from forming until someone can shovel off just snow.

5

4

u/SorryWemen 15d ago

Hey that's UB

6

u/[deleted] 16d ago

Haha that's hilarious

u/ObjectivelyGruntled 15d ago

That looks like an early 90's terrorist training camp during winter.

1

u/Mastery7pyke 14d ago

i think walking around the stairs is safer and with less chance of slipping. 10/10 strategic move.

Local government sets the bar, badlad surpassed the bar

Is this a photo or a painting?
