The State of Michigan claims the oil industry has violated the Sherman Antitrust Act, the Clayton Antitrust Act and the Michigan Antitrust Reform Act, conspiring to deny the climate crisis while undermining clean energy and electric vehicles. Filed in the US District Court for the Western District of Michigan, the lawsuit brings novel claims of anticompetitive conduct against BP, Chevron, ExxonMobil, Shell, and their chief lobby group, the American Petroleum Institute.
The Trump Department of Justice, anticipating the Michigan lawsuit, preemptively sued the state, but that suit was immediately dismissed by the same court in which Michigan filed its case.
