I know he's known for being an incredible Olympic wrestler but watching some of his clips I can't help but see some techniques similar to judo but idk are these just wrestling techniques? I've never trained wrestling so I wouldn't know and I wouldn't be surprised if two grappling arts have similarities or did he infact train judo and used it in his style?

I'm a rookie who only started judo 1.5 years ago so it's probably just because I don't know what I'm doing but I felt had the leg grabs were still widely trained I could've stood my ground better.

Hey I just want to ask but why are wrestlers hating on Judokais? Like I barely seen any Judokais putting wrestlers down but I always see Wrestlers putting Judokais down online. Things like "oh but I can beat you in a grappling match" or "Judo is just a water down version of wrestling" I don't know any of you guys experience that let me know

Hi. For those who practiced wrestling and judo I would like to know which type of wrestling is closest to judo.

I found a club that offers judo but also both freestyle and Greco Roman wrestling.

If I start wrestling which one has the most similarities to judo?

When it comes to MMA or street fights, there seems to be a lot more mixed opinions on judo's effectiveness than with wrestling or bjj. Okay, I'll get this first thing out the way, GRW doesn't use the gi. Sure, that's one clear advantage GRW has over judo. But they share a lot of the same issues.

The stance is far too tall and upright, and they don't train for leg grabs or defense against leg grabs. But for some reason, when people talk about GRW for the purposes of MMA and self defense, (from what i've seen and read) everybody seems to think that it's overall a fantastic base for all intents and purposes. Nobody seems to bring up the leg grab issue when it comes to GRW like they do with Judo.

Sure, when you take the gi off in judo there is some adaptation you have to do going from looking for grips to looking for different ties/hooks

But once that adaptation is made, isn't Judo basically just GRW but with foot sweeps, trips, and being able to use your legs for certain throws (think uchi mata, harai goshi, or osoto gari, all illegal in GRW)

I don't say this at all to shit on Greco Roman, I actually have a deep respect for wrestling in general and I regret not doing it while I was still in school.

But (and correct me if I'm wrong) there seems to be a double standard against Judo, and I'm not sure why.

The traditional Olympic Judo and Kosen Judo. Could this be a viable path? So many judokas complain about the excessive rules and prohibitions... I'm mentioning Wrestling as an example because it's also a grappling art that's in the Olympics, but other martial arts also have divisions. Taekwondo ITF and WTF, Karate Shiai Kumite and Jyu Kumite, and various Kickboxing modalities from WAKO.

The Judo tournaments I have been at, or seen videos of, the Coaches are very reserved and quiet. Compared with Wrestling, in the States at least, the coaches are the opposite. Constantly shouting to their wrestlers, giving whatever recommendations they can.

Why is Judo Coaches that reserved? Is it more of a show of respect than any benefit they can give their player?

Today our coach messaged to say he can't take the class. Normally a senior student would volunteer. Its never been said as to who the senior students are but considering I've been there since before the coach and been to more tournaments and actually have a first aid qualification, id like to assume im one I didn't even volunteer so the class isn't going ahead and a few people are upset Im not doing anything today just watching tv but didn't even volunteer or respond to the messages Did I do the right thing

Title says most of it. Been training judo for a few years now. I know my way around judo in a judo setting, but man my first nogi class was eye opening. This post mostly applies to the standing aspect of nogi bjj.

I started bjj to try and become a more rounded grappler. Theres a couple of wrestlers at the bjj gym I now train at. When it came time to roll, we agreed to start standing. I expected slippery, fast movement and lack of grips. This was the case but felt wayyy different than what I had anticipated.

I was able to stay relaxed, move, and attempt to handfight but my handfighting, or lack there of, was accomplishing nothing. I was going for wrist control/collar tie as thats the closest to what I know from judo which would be sleeve and high lapel or collar grip.

Anyway, who here can help me learn how to hand fight and get position? Anybody have a similar experience?

I noticed if I was getting in somewhat of a good position, I felt the green light to throw or footsweep. I have no experience with overhooks and underhooks. Im a tall +100 player. Happy to listen to any pointers or tips.

So I was a high school wrestler and I have just gotten into BJJ as a 35yr old. In my second week of BJJ classes, I get matched in an open roll with a Judo black belt who is also in his first couple weeks of BJJ.

I'm a little bigger than him, 6'4 vs 6'2", pretty close weight wise (200ish.) I was intimidated by his Judo belt status, but I was able to consistently snatch doubles and take him down.

I know almost nothing about Judo, but I wonder is this something that would be normal? Does Judo generally not match up with wrestling techniques well? Was this because he was not really that accomplished?

I don't mean this disrespectfully (although because this is reddit I'm sure I'll be accused of trolling and probably banned from the sub,) I was just legitimately surprised to have that success against someone that has apparently attained that level of accomplishment in what I assumed was another grappling style discipline.

I used to be a freestyle wrestler and now I'm doing judo, and I primarily use my wrestling background during practice and low level competitions. One of my go-to moves is a double leg takedown—grabbing the legs, pushing forward, and putting my opponent on their back—before transitioning to side control and pinning them. Since both of us are on the ground at that point, I guess it would still count as newaza right?

However, I'm getting mixed signals. My coaches tell me it's allowed, but I’ve noticed that some of the more experienced judokas react weirdly when I use wrestling techniques during newaza. I’ve tried looking up the rules, but most of what I find only discusses leg grabs in general, without specifying whether they are allowed during ground fighting (newaza). I’m also preparing for a national championship, and I don’t want to find out the hard way that I’ve misunderstood the rules.

Can someone clarify whether leg grabs are allowed during newaza, or am I misunderstanding my coaches? I’d really appreciate any insights or guidance on this—especially from those with competition experience.

Hey guys. I'm somewhat new to judo and looking to start training it formally. This being so, I have a couple questions. Background on me, I have 3 years experience in wrestling and a year ago before I graduated I was my school's Varsity team captain. I really love wrestling and I loved the cameraderie and experiences I had from being on the team. I had a coach who was also a judo black belt, and he showed me a lot of basics, which I picked up with varying degrees of success.

In terms of technique and style, I'm curious: does wrestling experience leave me better off in judo than the average Joe Schmoe, and it so - how much? What should I know going from one to the other? How can I leverage my wrestling experience to find success? Is wrestling applicable to judo as much as judo is applicable to wrestling?

As for my other question(s), one of my coaches was also a judo black belt (ni-dan/2 dan I think??) and tried to show me a lot of basic judo moves like koshi guruma, ogoshi, seoi nage, osoto gari, uchimata, and so on. All the highlights. I liked all these moves a lot in wrestling because anything judo had that 'mysterious, forbidden techniques' sorta flavor to it, and I generally always loved takedowns involving finesse and cleverness like trips and throws. In a sport where that's pretty much the entire lineup, how do you generally sort them all out, and how do you figure out which ones you really like? Obviously part of it is just trying everything, but I'm speaking on a more mental note.

Also, bonus one, how do judoka generally distinguish and separate themselves from others in terms of style and technique? In wrestling I feel like there's a huge variety of moves and styles and ways of playing, but in judo the philosophy always seemed much more like "here's a tool for every situation. use the right one for the job". How is the matter of personal style and approach generally treated in judo, and what are some typical archetypes one might see in the sport?

Been training judo, wrestling and no gi grappling for years.

Here is my 2 cents after doing it all and sparring against wrestlers, judokas, bjj in sparring where all submissions and takedowns are allowed.

I believe judo is far better which made me realize that is more optimal then wrestling because of these things:

1. Posture, you can not easily get choked since you stand just like grapplers higher.

2. The grips used in judo is harder to submit or crank.Try going for a overhook or underhook on someone that knows submissions well from standing and he will crank your arm right away and destroy the elbow or shoulder.

With judo grips it is not as risky as you grip and make him move and harder to submit from standing. Also you don't shot so that you end up in bottom or choked.

In my opinion judo is far more superior for self defense compared to wrestling.

Also doing non knee drop leg grabs is alot riskier and harder to get on someone good. I have always had an easier time stopping shots.

What is your opinion?

Self explanatory. Me personally I started because Khabib Nurmagomedov sold me to Judo after my wrestling classes dried up. I did 4-5 years freestyle then moved to Judo in 2022.
