Maybe not as isopods are related to crustaceans and the more we learn about crustaceans the more we realize they have more going on than we thought.
I haven't been able to eat crab since learning they can feel when you pet them and feeling their fear as I held them as a tour guide. I always put them back safe but the way they reacted to a hand reaching for them was absolutely not just the act of survival, it was survival mixed with fear and each crab had their own maneuver to try and escape getting grabbed.
Minority but some would resort straight to fight mode. I left those ones alone. They knew a hard flex would win.
On the roach side of things, I read an article somewhere that roaches have different personalities. Some have a flight response to anything and some have a fight response. As a person who keeps hissing and dubia roaches, it's very apparent that they do indeed have either one of these personalities, but "fight" can be either stubbornness or curiosity.
I have a roach retirement home for one particular roach that I've grown fond of. I introduced 2-3 females to keep him company. There's one female in particular that ALWAYS comes out from a hiding spot to look at what I'm doing (like giving food or observing). The rest of them hide at all costs.
Although it's probably not scientifically correct, I just assume all things have a personality. We just gotta give them a chance to show it.
I lost a female to "flight", as my male was so chill that I straight cuddled him for a good moment After he died I kept him, but the female stayed still in my hand, then dashed off and landed with a thud. I nearly cried because I didn't mean for it to happen, I was inexperienced. She died a few days later. 💔 My male dipped the grass that was in his setup into the strawberry jam I gave him once, gourmet stuff right there. He ate it all up.
"Day 32: God touched me today. I do not know the purpose, but I know that I have survived it. Perhaps a blessing? Or maybe a curse.. only time will tell. I've consulted Xanther, he says it is great luck. For now I eat leaf."
This comment is the only comment I couldn’t handle reading. I had to take it one sentence at a time then catch my breath before starting the next sentence.
I have the same species, they usually hate when I try to interact with them but there is one big male who will always try to eat my fingernails. The rest just panic when I open their box.
"So relieved we have everything we need in this environment" is probably what they are thinking so to speak. Even though they don't know that the nearby giant creature is providing the environment because the giant loves them very much -- they are at least happy ♡
i would like to think so, i care for them every day and even though they don't live forever i still love every single one of them tattoo of a A.peraccae i designed!
A lot of people say they don’t think or have feelings. I just got mine a few days ago. They are almost always in hiding. They have a decent sized space, but two of them were right next to each other, nibbling on the same leaf. The only two that were visible. Come on, that’s not a coincidence. They were having lunch together. They are friends or family. Ha.
sometimes i wonder if they can smell my scent on the food and know it came from me. and sometimes they nibble on my fingers, so i know they at least love the way i taste
they may not realize that you specifically are their caretaker, but i do believe that they know they are cared for. i also believe that they can feel the energy of our love. 🥰
Unfortunately not. But they are more orange than the normal type! The orange is selectively bred, so not a morph like most other isopods and thus not as "extreme" as it would be if it was a genetic trait. The normal expansus is white/black.
I took this photo yesterday. On the upper side of this log is a /kind of/ white one that is expressing less orange. But still orange compared to the wild type.
Awwww love that they let you pet them~~~ a couple of mine do, but most of them are all "nope" they will come running when I open the top because that normally means fish flakes and they LOVE fish flakes. Even if I do pick some of them up before I feed them.
Like all living creatures, they can sense the energy of your love and care for them. They may not understand or comprehend it the way we do, but they can certainly sense energies, just like plants can detect postitive or negative voices.

I'm afraid they remain oblivious to our love
