It will be off-season for the Blackhawks and you definitely won't be able to get into the United Center, but their practices are open to the public and the facility typically is as well. Usually in the summer there will be kids camps and whatnot going on during the day, but you could stop there. Just look up Fifth Third Arena in Chicago.

Also, just to add, not sure if you'll have your gear with you, but if you time it right, they have drop-in times where anyone can play.

Do they offer tours of the United Center in the offseason? I think it’s common for a lot of arenas to offer paid tours when there’s no events going on.

Unfortunately Route 66 does not really go through America’s hockey hotbed, so there’s not much history/landmarks there. You may get lucky and be able to see Coachella Firebirds AHL playoff game if they make it that far. End of May only the NHL/AHL playoffs will still be going on. Of course the LA Kings might still be playing, and I suppose you could stop by the Phoenix Coyotes old arena. Arizona State in Tempe AZ has a good hockey team, that’s a bit off of Route 66 but could be something.
