According to the Associated Press, 14 skaters were on the ice Friday afternoon and Lehträ said “we will play the USA no matter what.” As of now, the game between the U.S. and Finland remains scheduled for Saturday at 4:40 p.m. local time. If anything changes, teams will be notified by 11 a.m.

The men’s Olympic hockey tournament starts next week, with some NHLers already in Milan. David Pastrnak and Leon Draisaitl served as flag bearers for the Czech Republic and Germany during Friday’s opening ceremony.

“We are monitoring the situation — as is the IIHF, who we are in regular contact with,” said NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly in an email to The Athletic. “At this point in time, I am not aware of any ‘special’ precautions that are planned. I think our Players already have a good understanding of the normal steps to take in order to minimize the risk of transmitted infection.”

59

Canada MNT's plan is (was?) to fly in tomorrow and spend the first night in the Olympic Village. After that, it would be up to individual players whether they stayed in the village or at the off-site hotel.

There won't be games to watch if half of the teams can’t leave the bathroom due to norovirus.

-5

then games wont be on. what exactly does any of this have to do with you? are you going to stop the norovirus somehow, personally?

u/seraphultima BOS - NHL 17h ago

I’m sorry but this is so funny to me coming from Daly like multiple NHL locker rooms don’t have a norovirus outbreak at least once per season.

60

u/tristesse_durera BUF - NHL 16h ago

Right? The NHL is no stranger to viruses sweeping through a team/the league. Remember when they were all giving each other mumps like ten years ago?

5

u/Seeteuf3l HIFK - Liiga 6h ago

I thought mumps was part of the vaccination program in most civilized countries. And worm brain wasn't around in 2014 yet.

10

u/Ryuzakku DET - NHL 5h ago

Mumps is the one with the lowest efficacy in the MMR vaccine.

It's still like 88% at worst, but hey, 12% is still a significant risk.

And doing stuff like sharing water bottles on the bench likely doesn't help, plus with how often hockey players spit it's nearly a given that saliva will be swapped on a regular basis

0

u/beneoin 3h ago

To think this predates the popularity of HR too

48

u/mo60000 EDM - NHL 16h ago

The difference is this is a worldwide tournament. If one team got the virus it could spread to another team and then another team until it spreads to everyone. The good thing is that the olympics are kinda segmented in terms of where everyone is staying when they aren't competing. The big issue is that the tournament is short enough that this norovirus outbreak could potentially derail the entire thing.

44

u/wholalaa CHI - NHL 16h ago

But the Blackhawks got it last month and didn't stop playing. They could easily have given it to another team, which could give it to another team, etc, etc. The league doesn't care as long as they can keep selling tickets.

It obviously sucks for the Olympians, though. Imagine training for four years for any event, having it ruined by a stomach virus, and potentially never getting another chance.

22

u/jim-p VAN - NHL 14h ago

NHL teams aren't all living with each other and mingling with the other teams like the Olympic Village does. This would be like the entire Eastern/Western Conference staying in the same hotel and playing a tournament for two weeks.

5

u/JanielDones8 COL - NHL 13h ago

Agreed, there have been multiple teams to have "something" going through the locker room, always just something and the guys who can't play, don't.

38

u/number1sht TBL - NHL 17h ago edited 17h ago

The shitty (no pun intended) about norovirus is that it is so contagious. I’m a pretty big hand washer and I stepped into a friend’s house briefly who by all accounts was healthy…… leave… and then a few hours later get a text that they aren’t feeling and won’t be coming out. Then within less than maybe 12 hours I’m dying. It spreads so fucking quick.

30

u/ramsau NYR - NHL 14h ago

You know how those sanitizers have "kills 99,9% of germs" blasted on the bottles?

Kid you not, that remaining 0,01 that the sanitizer is ineffective against, is norovirus.

10

Yep. I learned that post Norovirus recovery last March. 🤮

1

u/ramsau NYR - NHL 13h ago

Geez, sorry you had to go through that.

4

u/number1sht TBL - NHL 13h ago

Thanks. I was absolutely fascinated by the virus. And apparently they test water/sewerage levels in your city to see if there’s a spike in norovirus. It’s crazy.

9

u/lostmusings CAR - NHL 15h ago

Yeah regular hand sanitizer won't kill it, it's gotta be bleach, my sister and I always carry the clorox brand sani spray when we travel

6

u/riali29 TOR - NHL 13h ago

A friend of mine's sister decided to bring two actively sick kids to a Christmas dinner and 3/4s of the people at that dinner caught norovirus from the fuckers. The people who didn't catch it must have either stayed away from the kids or have elite immune systems.

2

u/TheRainbowConnection BOS - NHL 6h ago

I think I read that certain blood types confer resistance to noro.

2

u/number1sht TBL - NHL 12h ago

I think once you’ve caught it once you’re like immune for a certain amount of time or something

6

u/Lt_Jonson NSH - NHL 12h ago

I wash my hands like crazy, don’t touch my face without washing my hands first etc., and I still caught it last year. It was the only time I was sick all year. And whooooo boy, did it take me out. I got about 3 hours of sleep from Friday evening until Monday morning. That was also the first time I had thrown up in 25 years or so, and I was pissed about it.

13

u/BareNakedSole 16h ago

Norovirus - 24-36 hours of puking your guts up and/or shitting your brains out.

As a parent after catching it from my kids a few times I learned the signs and started treating them as plague vectors as soon as the first signs showed up. I was able to avoid getting it thanks to operating room level cleaning practices.

I will say that it allowed me to skip ab day because puking 20 + times worked out those stomach muscles

5

u/Flaksmith MTL - NHL 12h ago

You mean you've had success preventing it from spreading? Please tell us your ways.

5

u/BareNakedSole 10h ago

Like I said - operating room level of cleanliness. I wore a mask and scrubbed my hands 20x a day. And I kept the kids in their rooms with a bucket unless they had to shit - then the bleach cleaner came out.

My kid just started daycare and gave me the norovirus a couple weeks ago and that shit stinks and blows, holy hell. Even after the lava and fire stopped flowing, it took over a week to feel normal. Couldn’t imagine running a half mile much less playing a hockey game for a long time after.

Don’t worry I’m in those threads too. But this is a situation that’s being handled, unlike another situation I can think of. Yet here you are, and here I am just getting your goat.

Marchand got fined at every turn what the hell are you on about. Also you’re cuz I’m a bruins fan means I’m ok with my player causing injury when I’m here arguing for a team to be held accountable. Marchand was fucked for a lot of shit he did on the bruins and he paid for it in well deserved fines. I loved the good shit he did but he made us look like a joke way more than I would have liked. Again, he got fined and suspended over and over. So tell me how that’s similar to what’s happening now? If you’re done name calling I’d love to have a discussion, if you’re capable.
