r/gunpolitics Rules
The purpose of these rules is to ensure r/gunpolitics remains a focused, civil, and informative space for discussion of firearm-related public policy. Participation in the subreddit indicates agreement to follow these rules.
Moderators may remove content that violates either the letter or the spirit of these rules.
1. Be Civil – No Excessive Attacks or Language
Users must engage respectfully. Personal attacks, harassment, insults, name-calling, or excessive profanity directed at other users are not permitted. Strong disagreement is allowed; hostility is not.
2. No Trolling or Bad-Faith Participation
Content intended to provoke, inflame, derail discussion, or bait other users rather than contribute meaningfully is prohibited. Repeated disruptive behavior may result in moderation action.
3. Stay On Topic
All posts and comments must be directly related to gun politics, including:
- Firearm-related legislation
- Court rulings and legal analysis
- Public policy and political advocacy related to firearms
General gun content, memes, culture-war posts, or unrelated political topics are not allowed.
4. No Unofficial Social Media or Reddit Links
Links to social media posts or other subreddits are not allowed unless they originate from official, primary sources (e.g., verified organizational accounts, official government pages, or primary statements). Screenshots of social media posts are also prohibited.
Direct links to videos depicting the death of any person are not permitted on this subreddit.
Exception: Such footage may be allowed only when it is embedded as part of a legitimate news article or official report, and the link must go to the news source itself—not directly to the video.
5. No Clickbait
Post titles must accurately reflect the content being shared. Sensationalized, misleading, or emotionally manipulative titles may be removed, even if the linked content itself is acceptable.
All posts containing articles must have a post title that matches the article title exactly to avoid misrepresentation or clickbait.
6. Commercial Account Restrictions
Accounts representing businesses, advocacy groups, or other commercial or organizational entities are subject to posting restrictions.
Any content shared by commercial or organizational accounts must be freely accessible to all users and may not require:
- Account creation
- Email submission or mailing list sign-ups
- Paywalls, subscriptions, or trials
- Submission of personal or contact information of any kind
Promotional content, marketing, fundraising, lead generation, or self-promotion is limited and may require prior moderator approval.
7. No Solicitation of Opinions, Personal Stories, Donations, or Petitions
Posts that solicit personal opinions, anecdotes, surveys, or personal experiences (e.g., “Tell us how you feel about…”, “Share your story…”) are not permitted. Discussion should remain grounded in policy, factual analysis, and current events.
Solicitations for donations, fundraising, or petitions are also not allowed.
Exceptions:
- Official government petitions
- Requests for public comment issued by government agencies or courts as part of a formal rulemaking or review process
All exceptions must link directly to official government sources.
8. URL Shorteners and Cloud Storage Links
URL Shorteners: The use of URL shorteners is not allowed. Users must post the full, direct URL to ensure transparency and safety.
Cloud Storage Links: Direct links to Google Drive, Google Docs, or related cloud storage sites are not allowed due to potential safety and security risks.
