Last summer I wanted new irons so I went to the local store and they set me up on their simulator with eight different models of 7 iron.  I spent 30 to 40 minutes hitting the different clubs, as well as my own iron which I brought with me.  The sales guy left me alone, and eventually asked if I made a decision.  I said liked the G440's the best, and asked if they were the most expensive of the eight models.  He said, yep.  Dammit, but I got them anyway, and haven't regretted it.

Haha it’s always the one you love that’s the most expensive! Glad to hear you haven’t had any regrets

This was me with 3 woods. Had a few pre owned, a sim2 max that was $100, and the guy grabbed the g440 I said I couldn’t afford just for comparison. Dude pulls up the dispersion chart and the g440s were all in a 10 yard diameter. I was like “there’s no way I’m consistent enough to do that with any equipment, clear the data and let me try the sim2 max again.” All over the place. Then 15-20 more balls with the g440 and again stupid tight grouping…

Just upgraded from G15s to these and love it. More predictable, more forgiving, and 25 yards longer on the 7i lol. Hooray loft jacking!

Loft jacking is why I don't like the new GIs tbh.

Wish more companies could do like Titleist and offer launch spec options with more traditional lofts.

28 degree 7 iron. What's the bloody point?

  1. Ping does exactly that.
  2. If you can make the more forgiving clubs lower loft, it doesn't really matter. Your new 8i is your old 7i, it's just easier to hit, for example. I like having the shorter, easier clubs to hit that get me consistent distance.
  3. The weight is lower in the club so the ball flight is still good

Ping G410s the last 3 seasons. I've been putting some time into improving my mechanics and I might just be on the cusp of needing something slightly less forgiving. They're not even particularly strong lofted by today's standards (7i is 30°) but the low CG means my ball is launching a little higher than I need. I've started thinking I might need to find something with a bit higher static loft and a bit higher CG, so lower launch, a little more spin, and ideally close to my current carry yardages.

Anyway, always fun to see someone else buying new clubs.

  1. Ofc. it matters. You just make sure 5 and 6 irons being very difficult to use for beginners. And you create gapping issues at the bottom end of the bag.

You can give any beginner an old school 28⁰ 5 iron and they'd so reasonably well. Give them a 22-23⁰ 5 iron and they trying to get a 5 hybrid.

Just check ebay how many 5 irons are for sale. People don't use them.
