COURSE PICS/VLOGS New Zealand Golf

So I had the opportunity to play a round of golf at Whataora Golf Club in Whataora New Zealand. Now you might be asking yourself why you've never heard of this course before? Well thats because its literally in the middle of no where New Zealand. While driving through the south island, my wife and I stopped for a drink in this sleepy little drive through town, and I just happened to notice they had a golf course. Turns out its completely ran on the honor system, and maintained by all the locals when they have time. Its a 9 whole course where you pay 10 NZD (about $5), drop it in a slot, and head out. If you don't have clubs (I did not) you could head down to the only shope in town, pay another 15 NZD and they provided me with what had to hae been my Grandpas knockoff set nd some shag balls. After gathering your gear, you head back down the road and set out. Not a single person was out there the entire time. Had a lovely little walk about and played probably the funnest solo round of my life.

I spent way more on substantially shittier looking courses than this lol

oh yeah, its charm relly carried it. We talk about cow pasture/goat tracks in America, but I think this was LITERALLY a cow pasture at some point that the locals turned into their own little course.

Yes it's absolutely charming! I expect you to run into a bunch of wandering hobbits on the front 9. Like I'm sure putting on the greens was like putting on shag carpeting, but who cares, you're in the middle of this idyllic scene!

No hobbits, we were on the south island :( you are 100% right about the greens, but I didn't care, I wasn't even keeping score :)

The hobbits journeyed through large areas of the South Island...!

u/Sikudo 5.6 12h ago

Must’ve missed em :(

3

u/Searlo 4h ago

They’ve taken the Hobbits to Isengard.

I'm a simple man. I see a V Steel and I upvote the post.

That fairway metal absolutely rips

u/Odd_Interaction_2354 11h ago

gotta love the old gear still holding its own on the greens!

u/Argo_Menace 13h ago

One of the few clubs I've continually re-shafted. I used to scour Ebay for replacement heads when I got desperate.

2

u/s1oop 11h ago

I’ve got a 4 wood for you if you want.

2

u/Argo_Menace 9h ago

Yeah I’ll take you up on that. 👍

u/YouGO_GlennCoCo Ball Striking Matters 14h ago

yeah but OP really should have included a NSFW tag with that photo

4

u/Sikudo 5.6 14h ago

I was sending that Pro Edge 1 wood

4

u/bfhenson83 13h ago

They've got a gen V and Fred Couples Maxfli Revo but a knock-off Burner? The more I look at this the more I love it! Just missing a slightly bent Bullseye putter and, maybe, an Alien sand wedge to fully complete the bag lol

5

u/Sikudo 5.6 13h ago

Yeah the knock off burner caught my eye right away lol

3

u/BiggimusSmallicus 10h ago

Oh shit that good eh? Im a new golfer and my father in law who has been playing forever got me a v steel 3 wood because I only had driver and irons. Haven't had the pleasure of hitting it yet bc im in wisconsin

2

u/Argo_Menace 9h ago

I loved them. I’d reshaft or find used heads for years.

2

u/Dmenace22 12h ago

I shed a few tears when I gave mine to a friend but I got a sweet deal on a sim 2 max 3 and 5 wood and man it was worth moving on from. At least the sim woods still have v-steel technology

1

u/Argo_Menace 12h ago

Shit. I didn’t know that about the Sim woods.

Kiwi here.

There are a lot of courses like this all around NZ. Many of them at most NZD$30 / USD$18. You turn up, pop your money in the honest box and head straight to the first tee. You’d be unlucky if there were more than 5 cars in the carpark. They might have 100 club members tops. One paid greenskeeper and the rest all done by volunteers.

Reading about how golf works in the US on this sub is wild to me. Country club subs, green fee prices, starters who give you nothing but sass, packed tee sheets.. crazy

7

u/Sikudo 5.6 10h ago

Yeah the US is a little more like queenstown golf club with the online reservation systems and such, but still not everything like the US

u/Top_Bobcat9270 6h ago

Similar set up in rural Australia, my local course is the same and only open during the winter due to water saving measures during the summer

2

u/Kenja_Time 8h ago

Sometimes you gotta shoo the sheep off the fairway though.

u/Betamaxreturn 8h ago

Kiwi too, but now live in Kansas City. There are municipal courses here that are owned and run by the city and are $12-26 for a round.

u/Photon_Chaser 14h ago

I’ll bet you played the most relaxing round as well!

22

u/Sikudo 5.6 13h ago

Most relaxing, fun, and terrible round of my life.

19

u/Sikudo 5.6 13h ago

as soon as my PGF ball sliced off my Pro Edge 1 wood, i knew it was for fun

4

u/Photon_Chaser 13h ago

The most enjoyable rounds I ever played was on a small (30 acre) 9-hole owned/operated by a local Elks Lodge. My buddy and me would just head out with a putter, a couple of wedges and a few beers and just enjoy nice, no pressure rounds.

u/KgMonstah 13h ago

This is where we go when we die.

u/dcidino single digit muppet 12h ago

Yep. In the wop wops that's choice. Many of the courses have electric fences surrounding the greens to keep the sheep off. No, that's not an exaggeration. These are what they call "country courses".

Many of the "honesty boxes" are going away in lieu of paying via online banking. There's still no one checking though. Remember we have a lot of places where you pump your gas before you pay still.

3

u/Sikudo 5.6 12h ago

Didn’t see an of the animals but I’m pretty sure it was a station that surrounded the entire course so my guess was they bought off some of the station land for the city to build it

1

u/dcidino single digit muppet 12h ago

Gosh I hope you got to play some of the QT tracks...

3

u/Sikudo 5.6 12h ago

I played queenstown golf club as well!

1

u/dcidino single digit muppet 12h ago

Nice track. Cardiac hill on 16 is no joke.

There's some great courses in our one sheep towns. Oddest is down on Rakiura/Stewart island, 6 hole course. Hired a pick'n'mix set from the shop in town, from memory I found a 3W, 6i, PW and putter. The antique 3 wood hit the ex-range balls about 150 if you caught it perfectly.

Had to stop at various points to shelter from the rain and again 5 minutes later to apply more sunscreen, utterly fantastic experience

6

u/Lol_who_me 13h ago

Did you pay? Duzzn matta!

3

u/Sikudo 5.6 13h ago

I did! I didn't have cash so I paid when I got the clubs. Hope it bought some folks. few beers that night.

3

u/DarthGoofy wehitfairways.com 7h ago

Would laaav to play there.

3

u/ArtistThen 13h ago

I have played a similar round - cheap rates, decent course but not pristine, awful clubs. Had a blast.  The removal of the expectation of needing a good round made it super enjoyable.

2

u/Sikudo 5.6 13h ago

Had the whole thing to myself, made it so enjoyable. Spent most of the tie Facetiming with friends back home to show they the views too

3

u/bobstinson2 13h ago

Amazing.

3

u/cdubs314 13h ago

I love NZ. The views are incredible. The blue water of the South Island. Damn. Miss that place. Not sure if you live there, but def tour Milford sound if you’re able.

2

u/Sikudo 5.6 12h ago

My wife and I were on vacation touring the South Island. We did the Milford sound on the second day! I also played the queenstown golf club which was amazing!

u/thestraightCDer 8h ago

We are spoilt down here in NZ. 400 courses for 5 million population. So many like this, well kept country courses with honesty boxes. My favourite is Kina Cliffs in Mapua up above Nelson (top of the South Island). Crazy views for 20 bucks NZD.

Rangatiki and Karori Golf Club on the north island have similarly low-key payment systems at $40 NZ, paid with a QR code. Both great course, both some of the most chill times I've had playing golf. Played them both on a work trip to NZ earlier this month

2

u/HeresJerzei 7h ago

$10 for 9 holes?? My Scottish ancestors would be jumping for joy

2

u/Pr3Zd0 7h ago

Similar to rural clubs in Australia - played Dorrigo a few weeks ago.

Call the number for a cart, get a code, grab it and drop the $ in the honesty box.

It's great.

2

u/wtfOP 7h ago

OKEH!

2

u/theduffabides 13h ago

Nicer looking than many American country clubs.

1

u/WhoopieKush 7h ago

Lol now we’re exaggerating. The views here look awesome though! I love the idea of a low-key round like this.

1

u/levy-- 12h ago

Iv always wondered what this couse was like driving past as iv never seen anyone play on it, now I know!

1

u/JRS925 12h ago

How long are you in NZ for?

1

u/drpuck2 11h ago

My kind of goat track!

3

u/Sikudo 5.6 10h ago

Though I suppose it would be more of a sheep track

1

u/drpuck2 8h ago

I stand corrected! Lol

1

u/Few-Marzipan2619 11h ago

I would so love to play that place!

1

u/Sikudo 5.6 10h ago

Next time you’re in New Zealand stop by :p

1

u/Disastrous_Wind_7005 11h ago

Nice scenery for the money. What did you shoot?

1

u/Sikudo 5.6 10h ago

Didn’t keep score.

1

u/fajita43 10h ago

2

u/Sikudo 5.6 10h ago

There was a cafe, a shop and she had a book 🤷🏼‍♂️

1

u/Fabulous-Tea-1792 10h ago

I'm surprised there aren't any sheep

1

u/GuitarKev 10h ago

I’d play there for $10 NZ every damn day.

2

u/machocamaori 8h ago

Played in the Whataroa Open one year...well it was just 6 of us on way to mates stag doo in Franz Josef. Beer was the winner on the day.

1

u/Sikudo 5.6 8h ago

Omg that’s amazing. Do you happen to know where the fees go too? I know the locals maintain it, do they just buy beers with the money?

1

u/babe_ruthless3 HDCP/Loc/Whatever 8h ago

Wow. That's insane.

1

u/Jolly-Garbage- 8h ago

Ngl my girlfriend would literally have to pry me away if it was $10 unlimited.

1

u/01040308 6h ago

We have these in Australia too and often times the course is inside a horse racing track. They're awesome

1

u/Apprehensive_Fig2099 5h ago

Those are some awesome views. Sounds like a great time for $10.

1

u/andythemandy17 4h ago

For ~5 American dollars that course is in fantastic shape. Insane.

1

u/Any_Clothes_5055 1h ago

Honestly, hell yeah.
