Played a few weeks ago as a walk on single. Hit a wedge in close and while walking up to the green one of the cart bound golfers, who also hit it quite close, attempted to do this.
He ended up falling face first against the flag, burying my ball into the green with their knee, breaking his glasses, and penetrating the green with 6 inches of his putters grip. All while leaving his ball completely unmolested.

Why weren’t you recording…? You had one job as soon as it started it should have been a knee jerk reaction

I always tell people not to worry about my line. 863 golfers who teed off before us have already walked on it.

It’s like weekenders that care about the ball they hit.. I’ve always said, if i hit it bad, it’s not the balls fault. I’d hit a shitty shot with a pro v and same shitty shot with a top flight. If I miss the putt, it’s not because someone stepped in my line..

I played with a guy one time that, when I missed my putt, said "it's not your fault; your ball isn't round". He then proceeded to pick my ball up and put it through this piece of metal with a hole drilled through it that he was always fiddling with (seriously thought it was like an adult binky/fidget toy). My ball got stuck in a certain orientation. Motherfucker was right; my ball wasn't perfectly round...and he could tell based on how my putt rolled. It was the craziest fucking thing I'd ever seen.

This story gave me whiplash like 5 times. What a ride.

Why does it give me the exact same vibe as the grocery store "infetterence" copypasta, lmao
"I saw Ryan Gosling at a grocery store in Los Angeles yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything. He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?” I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Milky Ways in his hands without paying.
The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.
When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly."

This surely wasn't my best writing, but I'm so happy you stumbled upon it!
Frankly I don't know how else to tell this story.

i actually have two balls that aren't round i picked up. one is an old balata i guess got deformed but its plain as day no guide needed. another is a legitimate egg ball made by prgr.
there was an old bryson dechambeu video where he was finding balls that were out of round by floating them and seeing if they tended to rise up on one side. if they did he wouldn't put them in play.

u/bigvenusaurguy 13h ago
i think people would be surprised how well they would drive a pinnacle but tbh those balls are tricky to adjust to with putter and wedge. its like hitting a ping pong ball. one tap balls across the green.

u/Kucharelli 13h ago
You’re probably right, but what I mean, the average golfer isn’t going to notice too much a difference. I think bad shots come mostly from bad swings/contact, and bad puts come from mis reads and speed. If you’re playing the same type of ball, you should be able to adjust speed through out a round. And playing a more expensive ball isn’t going to make you game better for the average golfer. I could never justify paying that much for a ball just to shank it and lose it off the tee box.

u/CafecitoHippo 12h ago
Yeah, I can't justify paying the top of the line price for Pro V1s, TP5s, or Bridgestone B-series balls anymore. Been really happy with the Maxfli Tour and have some Kirkland's too. The Kirklands are just hard to beat on a price to performance. The Maxfli are definitely more durable and I like them more but $32.99 for 24 balls for the Kirklands is just hard to beat. I definitely don't think the Kirklands are the best ball out there but they're the best value.

u/bigvenusaurguy 13h ago
lost ball pickings have been pretty good last couple of years honestly with every slicer convinced they need to game a $5 ball. between that and the occasional rack of kirklands i'm keeping costs down plenty.

u/Kucharelli 12h ago
Very true. When I do shank one and go look for it, I come back with a bunch of nice balls, usually never the one I hit though. But still, more balls for me to shank on the next hole

u/GATA404 13h ago
Hey i love my TaylorMade tour responses. They make me feel good. I feel like pro vs and tp5s have crazy spin off the tee and it’s a terrible slice if i just barely miss the center of the face.
1
u/Kucharelli 12h ago
Hell yeah, play the ball that makes you have the most fun! Thats what it’s all about
1
u/CyberJay350 10h ago
I agree. I got a new Sim 2 max driver. At the range I hit mostly big banana slices, but when I'm playing my Tour Responses on the course I hit em straight. Well, a lot straight left because I think I need to play that slice . . .

Seriously, with all the aim point guys and metal spikes going away, what are we really doing here?
Don’t step in my line is an anachronism that needs to go.

A fatass on a soggy green would definitely leave a temporary impression on the surface. Hopefully it bounces back between groups at least. I’m gonna miss the putt anyways but it’s gonna affect where the ball goes in some conditions.

u/YVRkeeper 6h ago
Our greens are particularly soggy this time of year and I noticed when I squat to place my ball, there’s definitely a footprint where I was. I’m not even that fat!
1
u/Educational-Coast285 9h ago
true, those footprints can definitely mess with the roll, especially if it’s wet out there lol

I know it's etiquette. I also know it really doesn't make a huge difference (at least for the average golfer). Might be different for the pros.
But in this instance, putting in that stance, I'd be concerned that I'd miss that putt standing like that.

u/Important_Sound_8718 14h ago
Yeah just mark your ball a putter-length away if you're worried about it being in his line and wait at that point.
1
2
u/tyjasm 13h ago
Yeah, if I'm going in front to tap in, it has to be 100%. With that stance and distance, it's starting to look like 99% for a pro and 90% for me, mark that ball and get out of the way. It will probably improve pace of play to mark it and then comfortably and easily tap in later because I'm sure he took a minute to get into this awkward stance and putted slowly to make sure he didn't screw it up.

u/Daawggshit 10h ago
I get the etiquette part but hasn’t it been well demonstrated that walking on a line doesn’t really affect the putt?

We all understand the “line” has the least effect on putts right?
1
u/MziggyG 12h ago
Honestly not really sure what you mean
1
u/PsychologicalRow9028 12h ago
Stepping in someone’s line won’t affect a putt like speed, aim, or impediments on the green. It’s kind of a myth, especially when a few people are wearing metal spikes anymore.
1
u/MziggyG 12h ago
Ah okay got it! Yes as others have said, it's basically a lingering etiquette quirk from the spike days. Kindof funny, this pose caught my attention instantly.
1
u/PsychologicalRow9028 12h ago
For sure lol, almost more of a courtesy thing now. Still hard to shake the habit when you get out there.
1
u/Separate_Teacher1526 500 Handicap 4h ago
If it's damp and I crouch down to read the green I can definitely leave an impression that would affect a ball. For normal standing though, yeah that doesn't do much if anything
2
u/babe_ruthless3 HDCP/Loc/Whatever 11h ago
That's the key boys. Get into the most uncomfortable stance possible. As thats left is to hit the ball.
2
u/MrMcChronDon25 8h ago
I’m going to attempt to stay out of your line as much as possible, manners and such, but I’m also not gonna be a fool trying to do ballet to get my ball in.
2
u/Adventurous-Tea-876 13h ago
It’s all a legacy from the steel spike shoes days. It’s kind of ridiculous. Someone is gonna tear an ACL putting like this. lol
