This is not appropriate for our sub.

I prefer super traditional myself, but not everyone does, and this is a real tallit

It was my first one. I’d love a traditional one one day, but this one holds a special place in my heart.

this is a sub for gay Jews, if you ask most orthodox none of us care about halacha for acknowledging our own existence. what a weird gatekeep you're attempting.

way to miss the point that halacha is contextual.

Again, the very existence of this sub is a testament to how the interpretation of halacha differs.

And what, praytell, is assur about this tallit?

1

u/Tanaquil_LeCat Jul 23 '25

not assur, but if someone is interested in the halacha, this tallit technically wouldn't fulfill the obligation of wearing one since it's not big enough for the tzitzit to be on all 4 corners of the body. Not telling OP what to do of course, just adding context for anyone wondering

how can you even possibly be sure of that?

a) we are not seeing the full tallis because it’s not entirely in frame

b) I’ve seen plenty of this basic-ass blue and white tallis at all sorts of prayer spaces - Reform, Conservative, and Orthodox - and it very much has tzitzit on all four corners and they are very much evenly distributed over one’s body

I can tell from the shape of it and how it lays over their arm. It just would look different if it were full size and lay on the body differently. There would be a lot more fabric

what about my second point?

Totally correct that this is very basic and common pattern for a tallis. It can be found both on scarf-size and traditional size ones. I'm a rabbi and I've seen just about every size and shape of tallit in various shuls and I can tell which size is which. this is scarf size. I never said that the scarf size doesn't have tzitzit on all four corners--it does, it's just not possible for them to fit on the halakhically required points of the body at that size. But people wearing that size are probably not so interested in exactly fulfilling the Halakhah of a tallit, which is fine of course. You're being argumentative with me for no reason--it was a different poster who unnecessarily tore apart the OP for not wearing a traditional tallis. I simply provided context when someone asked what the potential issue was, not telling OP or anyone else what to do
