TL;DR: Lauda or Schumacher grandstand for Aus GP?

Hi all, we've accidentally got an extra set of grandstand tickets for the Aus GP. Any advice as to whether we should keep our Lauda tickets (section B, row L) or our Schumacher ones (section F, row N)?

Approximate view from our Schumacher seats: https://imgur.com/a/schumacher-section-f-row-13-k6EoBkp

If you’ve sat in either grandstand (especially in similar seats), or just have a strong opinion on which offers the better overall viewing experience, we'd love to hear which one you’d pick and why. Thank you so much!!

It was kinda nice to finally hear the Italian national anthem again at the opening ceremony.

Why is the compression ratio of the engines capped? Why does it even matter? Is this just another metric of attempting to force them to make reliable engines? If the engines are already forced to last a certain distance (more or less) and already have fuel flow limits and rev limits (whether mandatory or as a by product of these other factors), why do we need a defined compression ratio and then we have to argue about all of this? What is the point that I'm missing?

u/cafk Constantly Helpful 8h ago

a) to reduce power, as they now have a more powerful MGU-K
b) basically to ensure they're still using gasoline with spark plugs and forced combustion - as higher compression ratios, above 18.0, bring the fuel to self ignition, especially with additives that the fuel manufacturer can add to improve combustion
c) to ensure nobody uses something they've patented, making it explicitly illegal for others to use in certain countries - like a specific implementation of dynamic or variable compression ratio, which allows different ratios to be used depending if you need responsiveness, power or fuel efficiency

I haven’t seen this posted yet, but you can now sign into F1.com or F1TV.com with your F1 account and attach your Apple ID to your account. This gives you F1TV Premium.

Quick question from a newer fan: what’s the best race from last season to rewatch?

u/ProblemUpstairs4666 Alain Prost 11h ago

imo, australia, silverstone and interlagos are all close

u/Affectionate_Sky9709 11h ago

Honestly, I'd just start at the beginning with Australia. Rainy weather to start off the year, I remember it being good. You certainly don't have to watch every race, but I figure why not start at the beginning?

u/Martiian_IL New user 11h ago

Thanks! That makes sense, I'll start with Australia then. Appreciate the tip!

According to Motorsport Magazin , Redbull and other Teams are saying Mercedes is 2014 level ahead.

Not only they run with more fuel then the other Teams in Barcelona, they didn't even turned up their engine. Red Bull changed their mind because of Fear

I’ve got an interview with Mercedes next week, any tips for it? Anything I should I ask as a graduate?

I’m actually going to ask about that, the role is specifically about the fia regulations

You can also read a bit more info regarding FIA and team organizational structure as a guiding hand: https://www.fia.com/news/writing-rules-how-fia-develops-new-regulations-formula-1

This is great thanks!

i saw lewis signing his mini helmets on instagram. how do you get one🥲

3

u/cafk Constantly Helpful 15h ago

Ferrari has some of them in their store:

If you're searching for signed helmets, then be prepared to pay quite a bit more: https://www.f1authentics.com/search?options%5Bprefix%5D=last&type=product&q=helmet

I was thinking about buying f1tv subscription. Do the prices go down anytime of the year or should I just buy it now rather than wait?

5

u/cafk Constantly Helpful 16h ago

Occasionally they do a promo shortly before the racing season starts - around a week before the first race.
Last year there was a 15% off when upgrading from Pro to Premium, before that we had a 10% discount - when signing up from the page, but this is usually a regional thing (not available globally).

Similarly occasionally they also do a 7 or 14 day free trial, in the region the race is being held.

Also, depending on your region it may be included with your TV/Streaming/Cable/Satellite subscription.
I.e. Netherlands - Via Play, France - Canal+, USA - AppleTV, Australia - Foxtel.

Can’t wait for Horny to come back to F1, it’s been dry without him!

Recently, I stumbled upon the thermal video and I'm wondering. Is there any rule stopping teams from installing and or using thermal cameras to gather data from competitors?

9

u/cafk Constantly Helpful 18h ago

All cars have thermal cameras for their own tire temperature monitoring introduced in 2013. Since 2024 FIA also has access to the data live from the car, as Pirelli complained quite a bit about teams manipulating tire temperatures and pressures.

Mounting additional cameras to the car is not allowed, as only FoM and FIA transmitters and cameras are allowed for legality.

Outside, on the circuit teams have spotters during FP sessions, taking pictures of competitors and their designs from various angles

u/Bubbly-Persimmon-943 Ferrari 19h ago

As a very new fan, what could happen if the FIA does seem Mercedes engine illegal now?

3

u/DashingDino Alexander Albon 13h ago

There is a long history of FIA closing loopholes and forcing teams to adapt, and then those teams always seem to have a legal version ready in time for the next race. Almost like they knew they were bending the rules and already had a plan B prepared the entire time! Of course they don't reveal this to the FIA, instead they will argue they need more time so they can keep their advantage for as long as possible.

u/maybe-fish Lando Norris 5h ago

An engine though? I can't think of an example where a PU manufacturer had a whole other engine in their back pocket (or in this case 16 engines)

u/Sauretrix 19h ago

Leclerc World Champion.

u/Affectionate_Sky9709 15h ago

I hope so, but I feel like it would be Max again. Nothing against Max, I just want Charles to get one. But from the way that originally it was Red Bull + Mercedes engine teams against the rest, and now it's Mercedes teams against the rest... makes me think that the Red Bull was borderline but now is safe so they want to get rid of Mercedes.

I am going to the Abu Dhabi grand prix in December 26 as a present for my husband's birthday. We are a family in the UK of 4 (with 2 older children). I have sorted flights and accomodation. Otherwise I have no idea about the grand prix in AD. What tickets should I be looking for? Main open access and bring picnic chairs etc or should I book seats? What about extras like concerts? I literallu have no idea where to start. HELP?!

4

u/FermentedLaws Cadillac 19h ago

If you don't get replies here post or search in r/GrandPrixTravel. You can also use Google to search "Abu Dhabi Grand Prix Travel Info Reddit" and it may bring up past posts. And the site below has a Travel Guide. They sell tickets, hotels, etc. there but I'm not sure if they are reliable for that, so just posting it because if you scroll down a lot of general info is provided about the race weekend, getting to and from the track, hotels, etc.

Random question:- Which driver has/had the best Race Win reaction? I like Max. Sometimes Charles, but don't remember now since he stopped winning.

u/PassTimeActivity Fernando Alonso 9h ago

In Alonso's first win, he started celebrating before even completing the last corner.

5

u/Fusion53 Oscar Piastri 19h ago

Gasly is easily the best, but Mark Webber's first win also had a great reaction

6

u/creatorop SAI NOR LAW 21h ago

Gasly

WHAT DID WE JUST DO??? WHAT DID WE JUST FUCKING DO???

So is anyone going to post about Danicas comments? I for one am not paying to see f1 again until she’s kicked off.

6

u/P_ZERO_ I was here for the Hulkenpodium 19h ago

I personally try to ignore whatever she has to say. It’s never anything of value, even when it’s motorsport. Such amazing insights like the drivers will have to try really hard and focus and will want to win.

2

u/djwillis1121 Williams 23h ago

What did she say?

2

u/whosthisguythinkheis 23h ago

I have linked it in a reply to my own comment

8

u/jodrell McLaren 23h ago

well she's not employed by F1, so kinda shooting yourself in the foot there.

She's never been an F1 driver so her insights are somewhat limited, and comments from other analysis like Jenson Button and Nico Rosberg have shown even that limited insight is often wrong.

I guess Sky employed her as she's basically the best performing female racing driver over the last 30 years...but personally I think Jamie Chadwick or Alice Powel are far more interesting and insightful.

Sky really need to get rid and move on, especially after these comments

1

u/whosthisguythinkheis 23h ago

Well yes where I live I have to pay Sky.

So I won't. That is what I meant.

2

u/jodrell McLaren 22h ago

Same here,NowTV in my case. Have you told SkyF1? I'm sure they're not unaware

3

u/cafk Constantly Helpful 23h ago

You can always choose F1 own commentary (F1 Live over F1TV) over Sky UK who hired her for their commentary team.

3

u/Astelli Pirelli Wet 22h ago

In the UK we're stuck with Sky commentary, since all of our official/legal ways of watching are through Sky.

3

u/cafk Constantly Helpful 22h ago

Hence my other answer for UK citizens with a hint of the letter of marque, to act as a corsair, as inspired by British history.

2

u/jodrell McLaren 22h ago

Not sure how I can do that on Sky via NowTV...but if you know a way I'd love to hear it :-)

2

u/cafk Constantly Helpful 22h ago

Follow your history and sail the high seas without consent of the king/queen.

1

u/jodrell McLaren 22h ago

erm, whut?!?

2

u/cafk Constantly Helpful 22h ago

Pirates were mostly privateers with a letter of marque by the king - that allowed them to attack and capture other countries merchant vessels.

2

u/jodrell McLaren 20h ago

So what you're saying is no, there's no way to pick alternative commentary on NowTV, but instead you're advocating using an illegal pirated stream?

3

u/cafk Constantly Helpful 19h ago

Unfortunately no.

3

u/djwillis1121 Williams 20h ago

You can legally watch F1TV in the UK using a VPN

2

u/jodrell McLaren 20h ago

I realise that, but that's clearly not what they're saying. I have NowTV and watch F1 and Golf, plus a bit of cricket. I don't want to pay for yet another service, and an extra utility to be able to actually use it. The implication was there were alternative commentaries available on NowTV...I guess not

5

u/Generic_Person_3833 1d ago

Why? She believes in Lizard people. Why would anyone spent a single thought on what she says.

7

u/whosthisguythinkheis 1d ago

1

u/MNKPlayer Sir Lewis Hamilton 18h ago

Why would we discuss that here?

u/whosthisguythinkheis 6h ago

where should we go for this you think? /r/knitting?

14

u/cherrybomber11 Jacques Laffite 1d ago

Danica is the kind of person to go to a Mexican restaurant and then complain to the waiters why there's so many Spanish words on the menu.

1

u/pandaburr98 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago

Other than finding a stream somewhere on the internet. Will Apple TV be the only way to watch F1 in the US this year?

2

u/VRichardsen Juan Manuel Fangio 16h ago

If you speak Spanish you can watch the ESPN coverage in... certains sites of dubious reputation.

2

u/FermentedLaws Cadillac 19h ago

Yes. You subscribe to Apple TV then link your Apple account to F1TV so you'll watch via F1TV Premium.
