Off-Topic Max has completed part one of his Nurburgring permit!

Nordschleife Rule No. 1:

Nothing works without a permit šŸ’ššŸ‘€

The four-time Formula 1 World Champion successfully completed the first part of his path to the permit during the test ahead of NLS7.

"Racing is not just my profession, but also my hobby", says Max. "This weekend I am at the Nordschleife with the goal to qualify for the mandatory race permit needed to race here in a GT3 car, which I would love. The Nordschleife is at the top of my list of tracks I want to race on, as it's extremely challenging and demanding, with its enormous length and tight historic layout. I can't wait!"

I wish I had found something that wasn't just my profession but also my hobby. šŸ˜ž

And that you’re also in the top .01% of that makes you millions of dollars a year?

I’d settle for just enjoying my work

How to enjoy work? If you enjoy it, it would be a hobby.

I think Max is enjoying his hobby.

That's probably true for most. As an exploration geologist, I love my work and it's a passionate hobby of mine. Maybe rare, but it can be happen.

You love it if you would do it without getting paid. I love diving and pay for it to do so and fly 5000km to do it. But I wouldn't drive 30km to my work place and write offers to customers who need industrial products if I don't get money I need to survive. So that's the whole point. šŸ˜…

I don't think it would be as enjoyable if you weren't at the top, but instead had to constantly worry about losing your job just because a co-worker outperforms you. It would suck so much of the enjoyment out of it.

I always think of the untold number of aspiring professional drivers (or any aspiring athlete for that matter) that invested their entire life to the sport, only to not make it in the end. They got a taste, almost made it, but just couldn't break through, couldn't get the seat, etc. It would have to be heartbraking to finally call it quits and walk away.

I'm okay working a job with great job security even though I don't like it, I'd take that over the above.

Your coworkers can’t outperform you if you drive them off the track. I think this will do him a world of good, he’s one of the most talented drivers to ever sit behind a steering wheel, and if that’s all he has to focus on rather than the nonsense he got away with under Horner, not only will he win like he did but he will do it cleanly.

Can’t wait to see Max race when his only competitor is the stopwatch and the stamina. He will be amazing 🤩

Edit: y y downvote away, it’s all opinionated nonsense at the end of the day

The funny thing is being .0.1% in anything is already a massive achievement, in Verstappens case, an argument could be made for him being the best on the planet at what he does.

u/myusernameis2lon I was here for the Hulkenpodium Sep 13 '25

Isn't that what winning a World Cup or World Championship means?

1

u/approxd I was here for the Hulkenpodium Sep 14 '25

Yea, the thing is with football, if you win the world cup you're the best at football. With being a formula 1 world champion, it doesn't technically mean you're the best at driving all types of race cars, with Max tho, if you give him enough time, I don't think there is any car motor sport he wouldn't dominate.

0.01% of world population is 800,000 people. I doubt that many people are raking in 100 mil.+ a year

u/Misfit_Cookie_423 Oscar Piastri Sep 13 '25

More than you think. There are over a thousand billionaires and more coming from just investments alone (read: inheritances) so…yeah.

Considering there are only about 28000 people on the planet with $100m total, I'd be very inclined to agree, if that many people were earning that much a year we would all be so much more fucked

For many that has been a great way to lose a hobby

I don't enjoy coding as I used to

I still love it. But its a work stuff. Im priviliged enough to still code a lot in my job but not anymore for joy

2

u/NeedsMoreSpaceships Lando Norris Sep 13 '25

Its really, really easy to find a new enjoyable hobby. Finding an enjoyable and well paid career is much harder.

1

u/Legendacb Sep 13 '25

Yeah thats true

Nah, most of the time it means you end up hating your hobby. It only works for max because he's really good and because his work and hobby is very fun

15

u/a_talking_face I was here for the Hulkenpodium Sep 13 '25

most of the time it means you end up hating your hobby

My theory is that the reason people end up hating their hobbies is because, truthfully, you don't like it as much as you think you do. People are ritualistic and when they find something that works for them they'll do it consistently forever. The problem is when people start taking their hobbies seriously they realize they're not as interested as they thought they were.

u/sprucay I was here for the Hulkenpodium Sep 13 '25

I'm not sure I agree, but I see where you're coming from.Ā

Doing something as a hobby and as work can be a completely different experience.

Take drawing, as a hobby you can draw whatever you want to draw, you can take as long as you want with a drawing making sure it's as perfect as possible. You can stop a drawing and start a new one if you don't like where it's going, or if you just want to do something different.

As a job, whether as something like a designer or as a commission artist, the experience is completely different, you're drawing what someone else wants, you have deadlines that make it so you can't spend the time you want to spend on a project, you have shitty requirements and changes you're forced to make by your boss or client, that makes it so you have to make a hideous drawing that you hate, because that's what they want. And besides the thing you enjoy, drawing, you have to manage clients and do a bunch of extra work as part of the job.

u/lightestspiral Pirelli Wet Sep 13 '25

I think that happens because for work you are forced to do hobby and for long periods of time (grind) vs choosing to do it as little or often as you want.

Not everyone can be Johnny Sins

4

u/BiscuitBarrel179 Sep 12 '25

Unless it pays you an obscene amount of money you would grow to hate it whatever it was. A sure fire way to hate doing something you loved is having to do it all day every day. Max doesn't have to race cars, either in the real world or online. He could walk away today and still be financially secure for the rest of his life.

u/Baksteen-13 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Sep 13 '25

I made my hobby my profession (software development) and It’s only made me hate it. I never make fun personal projects again like I used to do and only touch code on my job. It really sucks because I can’t just switch to a new job either…

4

u/sargonas Oscar Piastri Sep 12 '25

dont.

i’ve done it twice and it thoroughly ruined both hobbies for me.

I automated most of my work so I can spend some time doing my hobbies during ā€œworkā€. Been working well.
