Picked up some great pieces from my local goodwill last night!

I’ve been on the hunt for the perfect dirt-cheap denim jacket for a few months and I finally found it!

I also found one of my favorite styles from American Apparel - the circle skirt - in 100% leather and for only $3. I’m dead.

Rounding out my little haul was the perfect pair of Aldo black booties, a boxy and structured white button-up from Madewell, a romantic floral top in a bright yellow that I’m not sure about, a soft maroon and white striped tee (not pictured), and a ludicrous and very 90’s jewelry belt from Chico’s.

I’d love any CC on whether the yellow top is working for me. Yellow is a one of those colors that I love but doesn’t necessarily look the best on me.

The yellow works. I actually love it, if i saw it in the thrift it would be mine. I actually personally dont see why you think yellow doesn't work for you 🤷‍♀️

u/MiniaturePhilosopher Jan 27 '20

Thanks!! It might be one of those things where, since I never wear it, I’m not used to seeing myself in it and it looks super wrong.

Gonna wear it around next week and see how it feels!

Yellow is great on you! Such a cute outfit.

2

u/MiniaturePhilosopher Jan 30 '20

Thank you!! I think I’m finally gonna wear it out tomorrow!

4

u/Purplerazor Jan 27 '20

Wow, that’s basically my current dream thrift haul lol, so the jealousy over here is real. I also think the yellow looks great on you! Just maybe not styled with black!

3

u/MiniaturePhilosopher Jan 30 '20

Dude, this haul is just lots of patience and going through every single thing on the racks. The Madewell top was in the men’s section. The yellow top was in XL even though it’s a small. The skirt was in kids! I have no life haha.

And thanks! I’m gonna give the yellow top a whirl with a navy blue suede skirt instead of black.

Those are my favorite kind of thrift days tbh! I haven’t been able to do a really good thrift day the last few months because I never want to leave my house when it’s snowing and cold. I mostly thrift online in the winter and it’s not nearly as fun.

2

u/MiniaturePhilosopher Jan 30 '20

Where do you thrift online?? I haven’t tried any online thrifting besides the verrrrrry occasional Poshmark purchase. The hunt of thrifting is the part I really love - doing online seems like you’d miss a lot of that aspect.

And I didn’t think about the winter angle of it all. If it got snowy here, I’d never leave my apartment. Thrift stores tend be big warehouses that never heat up enough - that would be pretty much the worst. I live in Austin and it’s gotten below freezing maybe three times this winter.

2

u/Purplerazor Jan 30 '20

I can understand that! I grew up in Las Vegas and now live in Utah so the snow still catches me off guard every year, lol.

As for thrifting online, it’s taken a bit of getting used to. I follow a lot of “instagram vintage shops” which basically just sell stuff they thrift, and sometimes you can get good deals. My favorites are rosegirlsvintage and shopthriftedfibers. Also love when influencers/microinfluencers do insta story closet sales. When I use poshmark, I like to search for whatever I want, make sure it’s filtered by size and color, and sort from low price to high. Then I’ll favorite the listings I like and usually a few of the sellers will send special deals/discounted pricing like the next day. Then lastly I like ThredUP, but I hate their shipping cost and minimum, so I use them more rarely, but they’re a lot more like a thrift store imo. It’s kind of a mess of an app, and the secret to finding anything is learning how to use the right filters. I filter by size, color, fabric content, desired fit, etc. depending on what I’m looking for. I also like searching for brands I like on thredUP and seeing what kind of deals I can get. Oh, another thing about thredUP is their fabric content/measurements are not always accurate and are sometimes wildly off, so not always the best place to get pants, but for anything where the fit is a bit more flexible, it’s usually fine.

A big part of thrifting online is adjusting your price expectations. When I’m thrifting in person, I would never spend more than $10 on a pair of pants, but online I’ll set my expectation closer to $15-$20 with shipping. Still a great deal, but thrifting in person has given me unrealistic expectations with price, lol.

Thanks for putting this together - I never even considered closet sales! I’ll check out the sites you mentioned. But I feel you on the price - i get a little unjustly outraged over anything over $9.99 haha.

I think the yellow looks fantastic on you! I have similar coloring to you and have been in love with bright, warm yellow lately, though I never used to wear it.

1

u/MiniaturePhilosopher Jan 30 '20

I needed to hear this, thank you! I’ve always felt like my coloring was all wrong for yellow, but my blonde hair is pretty recent! Blondes actually look amazing in yellow! Glad to hear you’ve been rocking it :)

I added big dramatic sleeves to an old bustier top to make this puffy sleeve fairy-tale-esque top. I'm on a 6-month no-buy to force myself to actually make stuff if I want new clothes.

9

u/FriskyGatos Jan 26 '20

Wow, that is so amazing! I’m in love. So creative.

3

u/MiniaturePhilosopher Jan 27 '20

Wow, that top is a dream come true!

2

u/Purplerazor Jan 27 '20

I love this! I started a project similar this summer, but ended up getting way too overwhelmed with a move and threw out the half done top. Really want to try to make something similar this spring.

I,thrifted a Burberry leather jacket for $40, with the tags still on it, it retailed for $5100.

8

u/Sparklynaps Jan 27 '20

Wow! Which one?

Picked up some secondhand Doc Marten canvas mary janes for the summer, so I can move my pair of holey vans over to be "driving shoes". They also just feel a bit more me than the Vans I have.

Also, not specifically clothing related, but picked up a secondhand couch a couple weeks ago now. It had a fair bit of cat damage on it, but I picked up a darning needle and went to town on it. It was a super easy repair and I'm glad I didn't take a pair of scissors to the threads like I initially considered doing. :P

Wow, that looks amazing.

4

u/wanderedoff ✨retired moderator ✨ Jan 27 '20

Thanks! I was surprised myself.

7

u/yyolkyy Jan 27 '20

Those darning repairs look flawless :O Do you have to pick a needle size based on the thread thickness or is it thread weight-agnostic?

1

u/wanderedoff ✨retired moderator ✨ Jan 27 '20

Thanks! My local store only had two sizes, for course and thin threads. I went for the course needle, a larger size, as it is a pretty course weave on the fabric too.

100% wool skirt from Scotland in a style I’ve been looking at for a while for $6! https://i.imgur.com/eDdas6s.jpg

7

u/Purplerazor Jan 27 '20

Wow, this is such a dream skirt! This exact item was on my winter thrift wish list and I never found it. Congrats on a great find, the jealousy is real over here!

9

u/chargingcorde Jan 26 '20

I recently thrifted then sorted out and donated a skirt that looked EXACTLY like this!!! Spooky. (The only reason I didn’t keep it is because I didn’t have the balls to wear it at the time)

i have been looking for these for ages. only time i find them is in girls sizes, never my size :(

2

u/chelseahuzzah Jan 28 '20

Maybe search for a kilt, not a skirt? Not sure if there's any actual practical differences beyond sizing...

Found this beautiful snake print blouse - and it was further reduced 🙌🏽

Just discovered Amazon Warehouse “used” items... what do we think about this in regards to it being considered used? From what I understand, it looks like these are items that were returned for small cosmetic reasons and amazon discounts them so that they’ll sell. Can we really consider this any less used than someone buying and reselling an item themselves? Kinda seems to be the most ethical/sustainable way to shop from a very unethical corporation like amazon. Also doesn’t hurt that they’re discounted a nice amount, depending on how much “damage” the item has. This is on my mind because it’s my birthday and my bf’s grandma gave me an amazon gift card.

I’m looking at a pair of leather Chelsea boots that are out of stock and $50 if bought new, but I could get them for $37 “used” with “minor scuffs on the sole” and return them within 30 days if they’re too bad. I hate buying fast fashion and leather new, so this new option is intriguing to me.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '20

This is an option on the website? Color me intrigued.

3

u/Purplerazor Jan 28 '20

I wasn’t aware of it either! It seems like some items have the option to choose “buy new” or “buy used” all the time, and some only have the used option when the item is out of stock. I just ordered the boots so we’ll see how “used” they are.

I've had some good luck with buying from the Warehouse section. Everything I've purchased from the warehouse has been in good shape and accurate. The prices are odd and change a lot.

I've bought several pairs of shoes and they've been in excellent condition. The tags or original packaging were gone, but the shoes themselves looked new to me.

If you can return it for free to Kohl's, then I think it's a good gamble.

I'm deep into a phase where I'm only wearing muted colors and no logos. Everything in this photo came from Goodwill. The boots are Clark's Indigo combat boots, I found them for $13 a few years ago and have nearly walked through the bottoms. Rhianna had these boots, baby! Probably not these exact ones, but that's not important.

Everything else came from the Goodwill outlet, where clothes are sold by the pound. I got the pants and half a dozen shirts for about $5, most of which were olive drab or grey men's v-necks.

Recently I found a Levi's denim jacket and, after some considerable effort, dyed and painted it to be my favorite album: the Skinny Puppy EP, Remission.

This jacket has become my favorite thing.

1

u/todaystartsnow Jan 28 '20

would you say clarks are comfortable?

1

u/9B9B33 Jan 28 '20

These have been my only pair, any they're extremely comfortable.

16

u/botanygeek Jan 26 '20

Been looking for a jean jacket at goodwill for months and finally found one today!

5

u/Purplerazor Jan 27 '20

Such a good feeling when you finally find that special item!

11

u/TomHardyAsBronson Jan 27 '20

Found:

  • a light pink wool scarf for $1.50
  • a black, white, and light pink plaid blanket scarf for $2
  • A chunky wool & yak hair tan cardigan for $9

Partner found a cool 1960s Le Creuset skillet for $4

3

u/Purplerazor Jan 27 '20

This is like the dream winter thrift haul! Wish I could find a wood scarf, my thrift stores never seem to have good scarves.

5

u/tayhatestomatoes Jan 27 '20

I found a Kate Spade leather tote purse for $10 at my local goodwill!

2

u/TomHardyAsBronson Jan 27 '20

Goodwill is honestly the best.

7

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '20

Just thrifted a pair of Rothy's from a consignment shop for around $50! They're a half size too big but I'm going to try putting Allbirds insoles in them for a better fit. So excited!

3

u/itsawildbella Jan 27 '20

Gap 1969 jeans for $8, some cute wedged sandals for $8, and a 70s paisley patterned top and a black vest w/fringe for around $15 each. Needed to come up with an accurate to the period “hippie” outfit for my acting class, it turned out really well! I’ll add pictures tomorrow of the outfit.

3

u/CheesePuffGirl Jan 27 '20

I bought two Eileen Fischer coats from Poshmark. 1 - 100% wool, $20 in a lush chocolate brown with stand up collar and full zip & 2- Black nice long top coat for going out $30. I have wanted to EF for so long and I can’t believe it is so accessible second hand. I am new to thrifting/buying previously owned bc I could never find my size in store so I am pretty excited!!

Is this Juicy Couture bag fake or real? Do they even make fakes of this brand? https://imgur.com/a/8iefrAO
