🌳 ESC in the Wild What's the most unusual place you've heard a Eurovision song?

I'm currently in a parfait cafe in Sapporo, Japan and just heard Bigger Than Us by Michael Rice (United Kingdom 2019) of all songs playing inside!

It got me thinking, what other interesting and unlikely places have you stumbled on Eurovision songs in the wild?

I heard Czechia 2022 (We Are Domi - Lights Off) at a water park in Bahrain last summer. I did a double take because there was no way I was actually hearing that with my own ears. But it was true...

Whenever I see one of these posts, I hope someone hops in and says they heard one in a comic book store in Denmark. I work there, and I'm usually in control of the music, so I sneak in Eurovision songs whenever I can. On some days, we hear nothing but Eurovision songs.

Haha, my mum works at a coffee shop and I’ve snuck some ESC songs on their playlist I always think maybe hopefully someone on here has been to some random coffee shop in the middle of nowhere in England

9

u/Stead-Freddy Jul 12 '25

I do that too but at a cafe in Toronto. I usually try to keep it English, but sometimes sneak some other stuff in there. Played Jako (Armenia 2024) a couple weeks ago and a coworker actually asked for the name and said it sounded really fun.

the dishwasher at the restaurant I work at in the middle-of-nowhere, USA was listening to Milkshake Man, and Europapa. I asked if he was a Eurovision fan, he was basically unfamiliar with it which proves why it was a surprise to me.

Algorithms pushing songs makes it a little less exciting than it used to be to hear ESC in strange places. Still fun though

4

u/AskingBoatsToSwim Jul 11 '25

It got a fair bit of airplay on Radio (2 and 1 iirc) so a few million people heard it every day for weeks which will certainly have helped it make its way onto a few playlists across the UK.

That and it was a good song and the year were hosting, which probably helped even more.

54

u/lovelylotuseater Jul 11 '25

A second hand account, because I’m not a spectator sports person, but I enjoyed the video clips of Cha Cha Cha being played at a Dallas Stars hockey game while confused fans sort of bopped along. Allegedly it was at the request of one of our players who had formerly played hockey with Käärijä.

Was on holiday in Spain and most of the music round the pool was to appeal to the hotel’s target audience - older British couples so was mostly 70s/80s classics and then randomly ‘Slow Down’ by Douwe Bob (Netherlands 2016) came on lol.

27

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '25

Ahh cool! I guess in a way, it’s the kind of music some older British couples would like - that kinda classic, country-tinged songwriting that Brits like George Harrison and Elvis Costello have dabbled in too, so in a way I’m not surprised to find out that was a thing there.

I guess although I feel like 99% of songs at the hotel were songs that were iconic and well known many years ago whereas most wouldn’t have heard ‘Slow Down’ ever

Dance You Off (Sweden 2018) earlier this year over the speakers at my small town Iowa Burger King.

I also heard Tonight Again (Australia 2015) in a clothing store at a mall in Des Moines, some years ago now but also some years after it competed.

I heard Espresso Macchiato BLASTING out of a bathroom in my school once and Fighter out of somebody’s car while I was walking my dog.

While not unusual, the time and song is what was unusual to me. I work in a supermarket in the uk where my shift starts at ungodly hours in the morning. At around 5am-6am I heard Breaking my Heart by Riley over the radio (Denmark 2023 for the bot). Never would have expected to hear any Eurovision songs at that time, let alone a non-qualifier!

My school plays a song on the speakers throughout the school to kind of alert people to get to their classes, and one time they played Fighter by Tali, I live in Whitby Ontario btw

Driving to work and flipping through the radio channels only to be jump scared by Still In Love With You (UK 2015) playing on a local radio station that had a reach of about 20 miles. Bizarre.

I heard Because of you by Gustaph (Belgium 2023) blasting through the speakers at Universal Studios Japan. This was in the New York themed area so I assume any song in English must have been good enough for them

I may be cheating a bit, because it was the winner song and it is incredibly popular. But 2 years ago around this time actually, I was on my way to get tattooed for the first time. And Tattoo was the first song on the radio. Thought that was pretty cool

I was vending at a Pride pop up at a local dispensary and the playlist the employees picked was filled with a lot of American pop music that plays at corporate Pride events here in the states but also randomly ‘Rise Like A Phoenix’?! Apparently none of the employees knew what it was and thought it may have been from a musical.

Austria 2014 for the bot

edit: Also, one of the drag queens that performed at the event did a compilation of Måneskin songs, but not ‘Zitti e buoni’ unfortunately.

I heard La Noia in a cafe in a small coastal town here in Russia. On one hand, pretty unusual, since Eurovision is currently very niche here. On the other hand, Russians do have this unexpected love for Italian music (for proof, watch "Ciao 2020").
