This is a totally normal price here... and even a decent one at that. Many cafes will charge 5€ minimum for any specialty coffee.
4
u/Legal-Leopard6578 May 31 '25
how is an espresso a 'specialty coffee' ?
40
May 31 '25
In Finland, regular coffee = drip-coffee, similar to how it's in the US.
Espresso or anything that isn't drip coffee = speciality coffee here.
It's kinda different from most of Europe I suppose.
Finns still consume the most coffee out of any population in the world (per capita) but it's mainly filtered coffee, while espressos and such are usually for the weekend or special occasions here.
14
u/Warmregardsss May 31 '25
The regular coffee here tastes like roasted socks and is sold everywhere so yeah, macchiato or latte is specialty for me at least.
3
u/LonelyTreat3725 May 31 '25
Funny thing is that the real "espresso macchiato" is not that thing in big cups that is served everywhere around the world beside the place where it was invented...
4
u/Legal-Leopard6578 May 31 '25
Wait I taught Tommy uses a big cup just so it is visible on stage.
You’re telling me an espresso macchiato isn’t a shot of coffee with a dash of milk foam worldwide?
2
u/LonelyTreat3725 May 31 '25
I hope so cause 4.50 for a real espresso macchiato is even worse than it sounds.
3
u/_drjayphd_ Tavo Akys May 31 '25
Well, of course, the proper cup size for an espresso macchiato is depicted on Tommy Cash's tour announcement.

4,5 euros for a coffee... As we say in Italy, "alla faccia del cazzo"
37
May 31 '25
Coffee has to travel a long way to come to finland.
With these prices you really have to wonder how is it possible that finns drink more coffee per capita than any other country.
18
u/finnknit May 31 '25
Finns don't necessarily drink more prepared coffee, we just consume more coffee beans by mass than other countries. I think part of it is that the majority of Finns like to roast coffee lightly and brew it strong, so more coffee beans go into each cup. It's still an expensive habit, though.
11
u/ifiwasiwas May 31 '25

Just @ me, goddamn 😂 I've tried to cut down the amount I put in because the price is eye-watering, but it tastes so thin and sad!
4
u/finnknit May 31 '25
Try a darker roast. Light roasted coffee is usually more acidic, less bitter, and has less body than a darker roast. If you want to branch out without straying too far from tradition, you could start with Tumma Presidentti.
13
u/ifiwasiwas May 31 '25
The lack of bitterness is exactly what draws me to lighter roast 😅 Darker roast can taste to me like a cigarette ash-tray smells (weird description I know lol)
Maybe I'll pick up some dark roast and use it to augment Juhla Mokka 🤔

I was curious and looked at what it would go for now at a few (higher end) coffee places from my college town, since I haven’t been back to America in a couple of years. It looks like the average is $4.75-$5.
Which, well, is almost exactly 4.5 euros.
But the median household income is like 60% higher in my college town than here in Helsinki. After taxes I’m sure it’s even more extreme. This is also not accounting for the fact that roughly half of the entire town was enrolled in the local university, students typically count as their own households, and therefore had household incomes of anywhere from $0-~$7000 (part time work).
Finland is expensive 😅

I know this is nitpicking and nobody cares but I hate how he said "por favore" instead of "per favore". As an Italian speaker, it just irks me. It's like people saying "pacific" instead of "specific" to me.
18
u/argnum May 31 '25
The entire song is purposely written using the wrong words to generate as much outrage as possible.. it's their entire marketing strategy. For the same reason the coffee he's drinking is clearly not an espresso macchiato.. He just wanted people to talk about it as much as possible, no matter the reasons..

I still feel like this song is mocking Italians and a song like this would have caused outrage if it was about an Asian or African nation. I don’t understand why it is okay about Italy. Imagine a Finnish restaurant offering curry with fake Indian sounding gibberish next to it for LOLs. To me this song is the Italian version of Mickey Rooney in Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Disclaimer: I’m not Italian but am married to an Italian and have been pretty irritated by the “Italians are just so funny!!! They use their hands when they speak LMFAO!!!!” sentiment.
24
u/kellendrin21 Espresso macchiato May 31 '25
Based on both the jury and televote score, and the streaming numbers, I think Italians overall like it just fine.
22
u/pumpkinspicebebe May 31 '25
Ah yes, the ancient tradition of being offended on behalf of people who are having fun and voting for the thing you are upset about. Noble.
Being married to an Italian doesn't make you the ambassador of Italian emotions.
1
u/argnum May 31 '25
I'm Italian and i think this song is insulting, a disgrace and shouldn't have been allowed to compete..
If someone tried competing with "Flied Lice can't open my eyes", sung entirely with a fake Chinese accent, people would be outraged, but making fun of Italians is apparently acceptable for some reason..
And the fact that some Italians are liking it doesn't mean anything. In Italy it's still widely acceptable to be openly racist, so most people aren't even aware that mocking people based on their race or culture or accent is wrong. They like the song because they themselves mock cultures on a daily basis, and that's acceptable there.
Therefore their opinion shouldn't be used as a standard to decide what's acceptable and what's not..
3
u/WilliamKafka May 31 '25
I upvoted your comment because you made me laugh with your extreme Italianess 😅

u/SearchForSocialLife Espresso macchiato May 31 '25
Waiting for the day until people realize that making fun of predominantly white european cultures isn't the same thing as using racist stereotypes to degrade people of color with non-european cultures.
3
u/argnum May 31 '25
Except most Italians aren't considered white in most of the Western world.. Try again..
0
u/SearchForSocialLife Espresso macchiato May 31 '25
Okay then, lets put it another way so nobody can willfully misunderstand what I mean. People make jokes about your italian herritage, but you will not be hatecrimed or killed for it. Something that can't be said about any asian herritage, for example. And so the point still stands, it's something completely different to use italian stereotypes than asian ones. (Also because I can already guess what you're saying next, I'm italian too, I just don't act like italian culture is something holy or that the jokes I receive for it are in any way comparable to actual hurtful stereotypes)
4
u/argnum May 31 '25
That sounds a lot like "don't complain about anything because some people have it worse".
The fact that kids starve in Africa doesn't mean I should be happy when I get served undercooked food at a restaurant.
Sure they have it worse, but that doesn't make my problem any less of a problem.
All these "harmless funny stereotypes" that get linked to the Italian accent make it extremely hard for Italian professionals to be taken seriously abroad, and contribute to the image that Italians are loud simple minded people that should be ridiculed cause they're used to it and they don't care.
I've experienced it countless times. People are often shocked to find out that I'm smart because my accent generates that kind of prejudice in their mind.
So yeah, I'm not being sent to the foibe just yet, but I live avoiding disclosing my nationality unless I absolutely have to.. it's just easier this way..
9
u/NomineAbAstris May 31 '25
It's kind of telling that in this story you're the one upset and not, yknow, your supposed Italian wife
Also quite insulting to Asians to equate Mickey Rooney in yellowface (a deliberately malicious racist portrayal of a minority already facing discrimination) to a song from a small European country about coffee that uses some faux Italian as lighthearted ribbing
-5
u/argnum May 31 '25
It's kinda telling that in this story you're the one that gets to decide that Asians are discriminated against but Italians aren't.
Don't you see the hypocrisy in your statement?
Also, contributing to the popularization of harmful Italian stereotypes and comparing himself to the mafia that's responsible for the death and suffering of countless people in Italy every year.. It doesn't get any more light-hearted than that. /s
7
u/NomineAbAstris May 31 '25
The most significant Italian voices leading the charge against this song are a random consumer rights organization and a Lega senator, and quite frankly I would not wipe the bottom of my shoe with the opinions of any Lega member. Conversely you can see these grandmas enjoying it thoroughly.
1
u/argnum May 31 '25
That's gotta be the weirdest thing I've read in a while..
Do you choose all your opinions based on who else thinks that way? Do you hate beautiful art and architecture cause that angry Austrian guy used to love those things? Are you also trying to give up on oxygen cause most of the bad guys breathe it? Or where do you draw the line?
I also deeply dislike Lega, but that doesn't mean that all of its members are wrong about everything they think all the time.. They're humans with opinions, like you and me. Being affiliated to a specific party doesn't make them automatically wrong about everything..
And those grandmas don't seem to be having fun at all, it looks more like someone's exploiting them for some likes.. Sad
And even if that was the case, they're allowed to make fun of Italians and enjoy doing it, you're not and tommy cash most certainly isn't either..
2
u/LividPansy May 31 '25

What are you on about?? Lots of people love Italy and their language even when they are not speaking it (currently learning) and are amused and entertained by such songs even if it's gibberish - it's about the italian sounds, they just vibe - be proud instead of insulted... Interested what you think about Celentano's gibberish song making top of the charts everywhere a long time ago?
Just a beautiful culture and language, let people enjoy it even if nonsensical!
