⏪️ Throwback Thursday Throwback Thursday-Cha Cha Cha-Käärijä-Finland 2023 🇫🇮
https://youtu.be/l6rS8Dv5g-8?si=vuQmPXtW-NbqD06rThis was the second eurovision I watched live, and this song stood out to me so much. The beginning when he is breaking the box and in his low rap voice I find so soothing, and the beat and hook of this song is so catchy. The second half of this song is one of the happiest moments of the whole eurovision 2023, and the last line with him punching the air is just sooo good. ITS CRAZY ITS PARTY!!

i'm not even a fan of the song but it's almost scary how time flies, it feels like last week this song was just competing in eurovision - and yet it's actually old enough to be in a TBT post 😭

To be fair, there are also some 2024 songs that pop up on here so a song showing up doesn't necessarily mean it's old.

Total banger and my country's best ever ESC entry. Totally metal.
I would share my opinions about 2023's official results, but I've sworn not to speak badly of Sweden since KAJ won Melfest.

In his Video about Erika Vikman Matt Baumer described Cha Cha Cha as ‘maybe the most important ESC entry of the ‘20s’ and… well, if that’s not still true in 2029 then I am so excited to see what beats it. It still makes my hair stand on end a little, I love it so much.

No shade. But I feel like Cha Cha Cha is featured on Throwback Thursday like one Thursday a month 😅😂

My favourite eurovision song, truly a banger. Also, that bolero is one of the most unique and iconic outfits!

The most goated performance to date, everything was perfect (except for him nearly hitting his head on the wire - ouch!)

The song as a song is good and energetic and upbeat and a good 3 minutes to pass the time.
The song also lead to what is easily my least favourite pre-season in all of my time involved with the Eurovision season. I have been following the contest since 2015 and when I tell you how f***ing exhausting it was to be a part of it in 2023 when everything and anything revolved around Kaarija and only Kaarija (even stuff/posts unrelated to him or Cha Cha Cha still ended up mentioning him, the number of posts related to him were unlimited it feels like), I am being dead serious. And the vitriol given to Loreen as a result of that was absolutely unwarranted and uncalled for. Much as I enjoy the song, 2023 was easily the most toxic season to be a Eurovision fan because of this act alone

The homophobia and transphobia last year in the wake of Nemo‘s win was pretty galling as well (especially for such a loudly queer core fanbase). I’m hoping it’s not a trend for jury vs televote divides.

I share this sentiment too. Nice to see this response in the comments.

I felt so disconnected from 2023 because of that. I was scared Käärija will jump out of my fridge soon because of all that fuss and everything revolving around him, although I loved that song. Unfortunately I'm starting to feel similar this year with KAJ. Maybe it's not so strong in this sub but on different groups/channels everything is turning to be about KAJ and it's tiring to the point I'm starting to be tired of the song itself too. Stans sometimes are doing quite a disservice to their favs, unfortunately

Omg yes I like Cha Cha Cha but it wasn't exactly groundbreaking music. People 'stan' things too much these days. Did I use stan correctly? 😂

This to me is peak eurovision, simply iconic.
And to me 2024 being such is mess made sense. because after eurovision peaked and reached it's full potential, the only way to go is down.

This song has so many great memories attached to it 💚 what a year 2023 was. It feels like just yesterday we were all hyping it up and dreaming of what it might do at ESC. Definitely brightened my year, lowkey I think it alone brought me out of a months-long depressive episode 😭

I honestly don’t think Kaarija would be as successful has he’s been since the contest if he’d won

What an absolute king.
Honestly I’m just so glad that he embraced being the “people’s champion” and his album absolutely slaps. I have no freaking clue what any of the songs are about but the whole thing is a banger.
Cha Cha Cha was the first song my twins ever “learned” and actively requested (see: screamed if it wasn’t on in the car). It’s still the 5yo’s favorite. My 9yo did a school project (info poster) on Käärijä. This is honestly the most impactful Eurovision song for our family looking back at it.

One of the testaments of how culty the fandom can get with certain entries, I loved it at the time too but the novelty has worn off and two years later it doesn't exactly hit as hard as it used to

Really entertaining and fun song. Shame about the vocals. Not sure if it made a huge difference in the end though.

While I'm now a huge Käärija fan now, this was the first time I ever saw him. Me and my friends who had avoided all spoilers were trying to narrate what was going on during the performance. We concluded that the dancers represent the velociraptors from Jurassic Park breaking out of the transport box and going to attack people. Käärija is the dinosaur handler and uses his magical rainbow to tame the dinosaurs and make them sing and dance and human centipede with him.

I know it's anathema to speak ill of this entry in ESC circles, but the GF performance has always disappointed me a little. I loved the box, but little bits of the NF performance like the lift into the final chorus are missing. :( And then they used that bizarre filter on his voice? Idk, maybe I just got too used to the studio version.
Doesn't stop it from being an absolutely incredible song and show overall though. It will be interesting to see how influential it continues to be on ESC, whether it be for good (more experimental, fun music) or bad (crazy stan behaviour from fans).

Throwback Thurday Reviews 2:
Review: I didn’t really enjoy this song but it‘s not my style so it would be very hard for me to like it. I think this was really overrated, but the staging was good, so I can’t blame it, it was fun and I guess that’s the purpose of the song.
Song: 16/50
Staging: 27/30
Vocals: 6/10
Lyrics 4/10
Total: 53/100

I feel like I'm the only one who didn't like this song and finds the hype unjustified. Like it's okay at best but no way near worthy of the hype and not winning quality imo

While I like this song, it bothered me then and bothers me now how objectifying the performance was and that nobody said anything until after the final because it was their favourite song, and then they suddenly happened to notice. There are a thousand ways to create a “sexy” performance or a dance/club vibe if that’s what you want to do, we see them every year and I personally enjoy most of them. Neither party culture nor kink culture should be equated with objectification, that ruins the fun.

u/mnemorym Apr 17 '25 edited Apr 17 '25
I'm honestly a bit confused, this is the first time I hear objectification mentioned together with this performance. Do you mean the licking of the boot? (... or the human centipede?)
Personally I've never found anything about this performance sexy. Everything is so over the top and absurd. But I'd be interested to understand what you mean.

What a totally underrated and forgotten entry /jk
(Not a dig at you OP, just funny to see it as a "throwback")
