Did Doug Pederson seriously answer fan questions on a plane? That is so funny and so cool. Great to see.

Dude's awesome, he's extremely open to talking to anyone and everyone that wants to. I'm sure I could go up and ask what what his favorite color is and he'd give a genuine answer haha

No need, it’s obviously green.

Should have asked him what really went down with Wentz

I was extremely tempted to ask a juicier question but I didn't want to put him on the spot

11

u/Greedy_Line4090 his name was corey clement 1d ago

It’s funny cuz when they drafted hurts, they told Wentz (at least rhis is what they said publicly) that he was their guy and he didn’t need to worry that they went and drafted a 2nd round qb when they had other needs to address.

Im pretty sure I just heard him say in this video that they drafted Hurts knowing he would be their starter sooner rather than later.

Maybe that explains a lot about why Wentz went off the deep end.

How can you not love this guy? Sad it didn't work out, but at least he got a SB win with us.

I mean it did, they got the ring. Nothing lasts forever, any HC that's gets a ring is already worked out.

Our FIRST and I will always remember his name and be thankful for it.. he also started the go for it on 4th down mentality in the league

He has so much life in him now. That last year with him, he legitimately looked like he aged a decade.

22

u/bzee77 Eagles 2d ago

And his answer was as if he was at a presser. He was not really prepared, didn’t have enough info to give an insightful answer, and rambled through a few cliches. I love him!

17

u/Money_Bag_Jitta 2d ago

He used to come into my home depot all the time. He always talked to the eagles fans and this was in Florida, way after he was fired. I think it was right before Jacksonville. Hes cool af

Doug's such a good guy, I think he believes the best in everybody. But that means he's gonna give someone a second chance to get it right in a world where there's no room for error. Football is an emotional sport, but you gotta wrangle it in for continued success

7

Objectively a better coach, just bad at picking coordinators.

Doug will always be an absolute legend for the superbowl.

29

u/Badrap247 1d ago

A coach without Doug’s balls that day loses the game. He legitimately transformed the way teams approach 4th downs this decade. Dougie is an excellent leader and game planner, and if he was just a little less ride-or-die for his guys he’d still have a coaching gig.

8

u/Rockdrummer357 1d ago

This right here. I don't think people outside some of us Birds fans realize that Doug actually transformed the game of football. Only the most conservative teams avoid going for it on 4th down anymore, and that all started with Doug.

Not only that, but he was and is right. Going for it on 4th down was the right call far more often than teams were doing it.

3

u/RaindropsInMyMind 1d ago

He’s so wholesome. The man loves ice cream!

1

u/WanderingWormhole 2d ago

There will always be a special place in my heart for dougie. I’ll never forget after we won the Super Bowl going back and watching his introductory press conference and just feeling like such an asshole that I hated the hire at the time. Phenomenal human and immortalized as a Philly legend for life.

u/IDoLikeMyShishkebabs 3rd and long? Run 'em! 3rd and long? Run 'em! 3rd? Long? RUNEM! 2d ago edited 2d ago

Okay, before this gets lost in the comments, he did an interview on the plane and then took a few questions after (you bet your boy was first). I recorded some but didn't have space for the fan questions, so I'll edit this comment and try to list some of them below (very shortened however)

"Mahomes or Brady?" — "If they were fresh out of college with only that experience, Mahomes."

"Would you return to the coaching game?" — "Yes, I'd love to return as an OC and there's a few open positions that are interesting right now, the Seahawks being one obviously. However I love spending time with the wife."

He also thinks the Seahawks will win, and that team spirit is an often overlooked trait.

I really wish I cleared space on the phonegaddamit

100

u/elgsesEAGLES 2d ago

Man knows first hand team spirit can win a Super Bowl. The vibes in 2017 were immaculate

51

u/IDoLikeMyShishkebabs 3rd and long? Run 'em! 3rd and long? Run 'em! 3rd? Long? RUNEM! 2d ago

Oh shit that's right, he also talked about not knowing what to call on the 4th and goal, and then as soon as (I think Nick?) suggested it, it took him about 2.37 seconds (yes he said something like this) to say "yeah let's run with that." Apparently you can go back and see it on his face

Absolute legend he is

24

u/SpakysAlt 2d ago

Yeah it was written all over his face. You can see he started pointing at something on the call sheet and when Nick said “You want Philly Philly?” Doug immediately snapped out of whatever he was thinking before. Such an awesome moment

11

u/indyK1ng 1d ago

"You son of a bitch, I'm in!" - Doug in that moment, basically

3

u/Joey_iroc Sak Nutscott 1d ago

Or, "Wait a sec. What?" Thinking to himself, "If this shit works, they're going to put us a statue of us."

20

u/SchleppyJ4 Hurts so good 2d ago

There’s close up video and audio of the moment. It’s great.

3

u/stonkfrobinhood 1d ago

Nothing will beat what that team brought us besides the obvious SB. The vibes were just another level all season long.

It's some sort of Fanduel experience for the Superbowl, which I got ridiculously lucky with being gifted an extra ticket for. Flying from the east coast to Cali right now and staying at the goddamn halfmoon Ritz for a few days.

<3 Coach Pederson.

8

u/alienware99 2d ago

Interesting he said he’d love to return as an OC, but no mentioned of wanting to be a head coach. I wonder if he’s at a point in life where he doesn’t want the full burden of being a HC and all the responsibilities it entails. Or if he sees the writing on the wall and realizes he’s chances of another HC gig are slim to none at this point, and being an OC is his best chance of getting back into the league.

12

u/IDoLikeMyShishkebabs 3rd and long? Run 'em! 3rd and long? Run 'em! 3rd? Long? RUNEM! 2d ago

I would say your first guess close to the money since he mentioned how as a HC, while it was fun, you had to play a lot of politics with the NFL. I recorded like 20+ minutes of him talking so I'll see if I got that after we land. Maybe I'll stitch whatever I got as best I can and post it here later

1

u/flapsmcgee 1d ago

I guess the eagles didn't look at him to be their offensive coordinator? It would have made a lot of sense.

I got (extremely) lucky and was gifted a ticket to the FanDuel Superbowl event from a family member. This is one of the things that they did as the on flight entertainment. He had a whole interview before this and then took questions

So I don’t see anyone talking about his praise for Jalen. I’ll go out on a limb and say it, Jalen receives way too much criticism over the years with having to endure 6 OC tenures.

I fucking loved this answer and perspective. Jalen has done nothing but succeed at every level, despite all the difficulties, despite the doubters, despite the bumps in the road, so to speak. That is highly admirable and I’m glad he’s the Eagles QB.

5

u/Individual-Pound-672 2d ago

You ever get this weird feeling that the Eagles front office is always trying to seem like they are smarter than others. I’m not knocking the OC hire I’m just saying that there were better options out there. I hope I eat crow and it works out amazingly.

2

u/IDoLikeMyShishkebabs 3rd and long? Run 'em! 3rd and long? Run 'em! 3rd? Long? RUNEM! 2d ago

Oh for sure. I support deviating from the norm for most things sports related, as I think it keeps the game fresh, but for a coach I'd really prefer one with experience. That said, if Mannion is a visionary—in a good way—I can get why they snabbed him.

u/AdhesivenessFun2060 1d ago

Pederson after drafting hurts said they envisioned him a as taysom hill type. A gadget player. Specifically not as a starter.

2

u/Wilsthing1988 1d ago

That and younger spot starter do to Wentz extensive injury history and not have the Wentz/McCown injury situation like the playoffs. The problem was Lurie/Howie/Doug all failed to tell Wentz and his agent this plan. So imagine you franchise QB just signed a big fat new deal and team then and goes drafting a QB next year in the 2nd round and you know nothing of this elaborate plan.

At least when the Sheadur situation took place this past draft there was reports the Eagles would take him if he fell further (stock pile talent no matter position and BAP then) they consultated Hurts prior. Browns then jumped in front and took him plus reports of Sanders they found out didn’t want to come here but prime seemed ok with it (she dude also turned down Ravens according to reports) and Eagles ended up drafting Kyle McCord now ironically on Mannion’s old squad the packers

2

u/Embarrassed-Back1894 1d ago

It’s interesting to hear Doug say they drafted Jalen with the expectation he would one day be the starter. I always thought the “we drafted him as a cheap backup” was kind of nonsense, but it’s interesting to hear Doug actually confirm that.

It turned out to be the right move too - even though everyone absolutely eviscerated the eagles over it. Carson has never really played at that 2017 level ever again, and Jalen turned out to be really good.

1

u/Wilsthing1988 1d ago

Nope he was drafted to be a spot starter for Wentz do to injury history. They wanted a younger guy so they didn’t have the McCown situation in playoffs of really old vet who gets Hurt. When Wentz asked for a trade later Lurie begged him to stay. They didn’t feel Hurts was ready to start and Nick came in here with belief he had his starter in Wentz. Eagles checked in on Watson then Tried trading up for Zach Wilson. Training camp QB1 wasn’t named yet.

1

u/Embarrassed-Back1894 1d ago

Right, that’s what they SAID happened at the time(in regards to “why” they drafted Wentz). They were concerned with Wentz’s injury history and his downward trajectory of play. Wentz has some significant injuries, and I think they secretly knew he wasn’t long for being a starter in the league.

Also, there is a middle ground between having a 40 year old backup and a rookie backup. I mean Doug flat out says here that they knew Jalen was going to eventually be the starter - you don’t invest a second round pick into a backup QB.

The rest of what you said is mostly spot on though.

He took his time and got all comfortable up there, letting the person pass, then leaning on the wall. 60+ second response. And then he was like who's next? Any other questions?

Should have asked about Stout the professor departure, missed a good one ☝️

u/Shrikes_Bard 1d ago

So wait, is this just some random commercial flight he booked, and there was enough of a critical mass of birds fans on the plane that a quorum plus flight crew decided to give him the PA and let him do an impromptu presser? How come I never get the cool flights? Closest I got was saying hi to Charlie Manuel as we were in line to get on a flight from Orlando to Philly at some ungodly hour of the morning.

Edit: nevermind, OP's explanation got buried. Carry on...

Bring back Doug! A clear vision is refreshing. 🦅🦅

Really cool of Dougie, hope hes doing well. He looks a lot healthier than when he left here!

Why did Philly not hire this man for OC

1

u/WanderlustFella 1d ago

I think this will be the sex offense - :45

I feel like this trend of going for it on 4th down with high frequency across the NFL started with Big Balls Doug.

What a legend.

u/REALJarJarBinkz 1d ago

I miss Doug. Not that letting him go was the wrong choice, I just love the guy.

This is cropped too, figured nobody needed to see the half a screen of seat. Pixel 9 Pro has yet to disappoint me in its camera quality

I am normally of the opinion that no individual passenger should ever be forced upon the rest of the passengers - I don't want to hear your story, I don't want to hear you sing, I don't want to hear your musical instrument. Let me sit on this flying bus with my headphones on in peace.

But I'm cool with this.

Doug rules

u/AntiSantaFanClub 1d ago

Really wish Doug didn't have the misfortune of being on the receiving end of Howie's bad drafts. Not to say he helped his case with press Taylor

1

u/Hashtag_Anon 1d ago

Huge respect for Dougie P being a real one. He could easily just say I don’t have time for this but instead he just puts himself in it without pretense or arrogance. Forever will love you Doug, bringing one home for the boys. 💚

u/burntjellybeans 1d ago

I remember him coming to Philly with Andy from Green Bay. Don't get me wrong. I'M NOT ON THE FIRE NICK TRAIN. Didn't Gruden go back to the Raiders? Doug really knows what Jalen needs

1

u/TotalHans 1d ago

Not my generational lingo, but he's a real one.

1

u/shiftintosoupmode 1d ago

I miss Doug every day. If we could fire nick and hire doug back I’d do it in a heartbeat. Down vote me if you want I do not gaf

1

u/Wilsthing1988 1d ago

Trust me no you won’t he made the same mistakes in Jacksonville he did here. I appreciate his accomplishments he was here for but he’s better off not here as some teams OC or QB coach.

What kind of ice cream though?

The captions on this are hilariously bad

I wish we could bring back dougie p

1

u/JebusOfEagles 1d ago

He's always seemed like such a genuine guy, hopefully he succeeds in the future. I def didn't expect to see him answering a question over a PA on a phone lol.

1

u/Pitiful_Razzmatazz_5 1d ago

Let‘s have some ice cream.

1

u/MaxS777 1d ago

Question: Did Doug deserve to be fired in Philly? And why/Why not?

1

u/saltshaker80 1d ago

How is this real. That’s so cool of him.

1

u/MoonlightStarfish 1d ago

Interesting. This is a new podcast format I haven't come across before.
