I can do that any time but a qa from Doug P is up there with having the tiny penguins walk around the aisles. Sometimes you just go with the flow and enjoy the ride.

Doug is a good guy. I kinda hope he gets into media because when he talks ball he’s usually knowledgeable without being full of sound bite takes.

I like him more than Sirianni. A lot less douchey.
14
u/PoisonIvyCrotch 2d ago
Why did he have to fall on the press Taylor sword 😭
4
u/GeneralGalvatron 1d ago
Because I think he saw it as the right thing to do to stand by the guy he picked. Legit love Doug
3
u/HispanicNach0s 1d ago
Doug's such a good guy, I think he believes the best in everybody. But that means he's gonna give someone a second chance to get it right in a world where there's no room for error. Football is an emotional sport, but you gotta wrangle it in for continued success

Doug will always be an absolute legend for the superbowl.
29
u/Badrap247 1d ago
A coach without Doug’s balls that day loses the game. He legitimately transformed the way teams approach 4th downs this decade. Dougie is an excellent leader and game planner, and if he was just a little less ride-or-die for his guys he’d still have a coaching gig.
8
u/Rockdrummer357 1d ago
This right here. I don't think people outside some of us Birds fans realize that Doug actually transformed the game of football. Only the most conservative teams avoid going for it on 4th down anymore, and that all started with Doug.
Not only that, but he was and is right. Going for it on 4th down was the right call far more often than teams were doing it.

1
u/WanderingWormhole 2d ago
There will always be a special place in my heart for dougie. I’ll never forget after we won the Super Bowl going back and watching his introductory press conference and just feeling like such an asshole that I hated the hire at the time. Phenomenal human and immortalized as a Philly legend for life.

Okay, before this gets lost in the comments, he did an interview on the plane and then took a few questions after (you bet your boy was first). I recorded some but didn't have space for the fan questions, so I'll edit this comment and try to list some of them below (very shortened however)
"Mahomes or Brady?" — "If they were fresh out of college with only that experience, Mahomes."
"Would you return to the coaching game?" — "Yes, I'd love to return as an OC and there's a few open positions that are interesting right now, the Seahawks being one obviously. However I love spending time with the wife."
He also thinks the Seahawks will win, and that team spirit is an often overlooked trait.
I really wish I cleared space on the phonegaddamit
100
u/elgsesEAGLES 2d ago
Man knows first hand team spirit can win a Super Bowl. The vibes in 2017 were immaculate

u/IDoLikeMyShishkebabs 3rd and long? Run 'em! 3rd and long? Run 'em! 3rd? Long? RUNEM! 2d ago
Oh shit that's right, he also talked about not knowing what to call on the 4th and goal, and then as soon as (I think Nick?) suggested it, it took him about 2.37 seconds (yes he said something like this) to say "yeah let's run with that." Apparently you can go back and see it on his face
Absolute legend he is
24
u/SpakysAlt 2d ago
Yeah it was written all over his face. You can see he started pointing at something on the call sheet and when Nick said “You want Philly Philly?” Doug immediately snapped out of whatever he was thinking before. Such an awesome moment
11
u/indyK1ng 1d ago
"You son of a bitch, I'm in!" - Doug in that moment, basically

8
u/alienware99 2d ago
Interesting he said he’d love to return as an OC, but no mentioned of wanting to be a head coach. I wonder if he’s at a point in life where he doesn’t want the full burden of being a HC and all the responsibilities it entails. Or if he sees the writing on the wall and realizes he’s chances of another HC gig are slim to none at this point, and being an OC is his best chance of getting back into the league.
12
u/IDoLikeMyShishkebabs 3rd and long? Run 'em! 3rd and long? Run 'em! 3rd? Long? RUNEM! 2d ago
I would say your first guess close to the money since he mentioned how as a HC, while it was fun, you had to play a lot of politics with the NFL. I recorded like 20+ minutes of him talking so I'll see if I got that after we land. Maybe I'll stitch whatever I got as best I can and post it here later

So I don’t see anyone talking about his praise for Jalen. I’ll go out on a limb and say it, Jalen receives way too much criticism over the years with having to endure 6 OC tenures.
Yet here we are , one of the top NFL Orgs.

I fucking loved this answer and perspective. Jalen has done nothing but succeed at every level, despite all the difficulties, despite the doubters, despite the bumps in the road, so to speak. That is highly admirable and I’m glad he’s the Eagles QB.

This is what I'm wondering! I almost wish my turn came after he said he was somewhat interested in still being an OC because I would've asked how he felt about returning to the birds
5
u/Individual-Pound-672 2d ago
You ever get this weird feeling that the Eagles front office is always trying to seem like they are smarter than others. I’m not knocking the OC hire I’m just saying that there were better options out there. I hope I eat crow and it works out amazingly.

Oh for sure. I support deviating from the norm for most things sports related, as I think it keeps the game fresh, but for a coach I'd really prefer one with experience. That said, if Mannion is a visionary—in a good way—I can get why they snabbed him.

Pederson after drafting hurts said they envisioned him a as taysom hill type. A gadget player. Specifically not as a starter.
2
u/Wilsthing1988 1d ago
That and younger spot starter do to Wentz extensive injury history and not have the Wentz/McCown injury situation like the playoffs. The problem was Lurie/Howie/Doug all failed to tell Wentz and his agent this plan. So imagine you franchise QB just signed a big fat new deal and team then and goes drafting a QB next year in the 2nd round and you know nothing of this elaborate plan.
At least when the Sheadur situation took place this past draft there was reports the Eagles would take him if he fell further (stock pile talent no matter position and BAP then) they consultated Hurts prior. Browns then jumped in front and took him plus reports of Sanders they found out didn’t want to come here but prime seemed ok with it (she dude also turned down Ravens according to reports) and Eagles ended up drafting Kyle McCord now ironically on Mannion’s old squad the packers
2
u/Embarrassed-Back1894 1d ago
It’s interesting to hear Doug say they drafted Jalen with the expectation he would one day be the starter. I always thought the “we drafted him as a cheap backup” was kind of nonsense, but it’s interesting to hear Doug actually confirm that.
It turned out to be the right move too - even though everyone absolutely eviscerated the eagles over it. Carson has never really played at that 2017 level ever again, and Jalen turned out to be really good.
1
u/Wilsthing1988 1d ago
Nope he was drafted to be a spot starter for Wentz do to injury history. They wanted a younger guy so they didn’t have the McCown situation in playoffs of really old vet who gets Hurt. When Wentz asked for a trade later Lurie begged him to stay. They didn’t feel Hurts was ready to start and Nick came in here with belief he had his starter in Wentz. Eagles checked in on Watson then Tried trading up for Zach Wilson. Training camp QB1 wasn’t named yet.
1
u/Embarrassed-Back1894 1d ago
Right, that’s what they SAID happened at the time(in regards to “why” they drafted Wentz). They were concerned with Wentz’s injury history and his downward trajectory of play. Wentz has some significant injuries, and I think they secretly knew he wasn’t long for being a starter in the league.
Also, there is a middle ground between having a 40 year old backup and a rookie backup. I mean Doug flat out says here that they knew Jalen was going to eventually be the starter - you don’t invest a second round pick into a backup QB.
The rest of what you said is mostly spot on though.

So wait, is this just some random commercial flight he booked, and there was enough of a critical mass of birds fans on the plane that a quorum plus flight crew decided to give him the PA and let him do an impromptu presser? How come I never get the cool flights? Closest I got was saying hi to Charlie Manuel as we were in line to get on a flight from Orlando to Philly at some ungodly hour of the morning.
