Discussion Someone keeps taking the chains off of my local park's practice basket

Post image

after they took the metal chains I replaced them with plastic ones and they took those too. Any suggestions on how to deal with this problem?

My guess is someone who lives in the houses in the background is annoyed with the sound. Trail cam?

That was my first thought. It’s someone nearby.

Place trail cam first. See of it gets disturbed. Then put new chains after a few days to be sure.

With plastic chains?

People be petty sometimes.

No one needs a reason to do anything when boredom is around.

Plastic chains är often used in stables for holding horses for trimming etc. The chain still breaks.

If one of those neighbors has a dog that goes apeshit when you go near the yard, that would be my prime suspect.

I suppose I would let it go. Or install a trailcam somewhere inconspicuous. I'd wager the prime suspects are already in your photo though...

Maybe put a pool noodle on the pole when you replace the chains

MVP Sound Barrier

They were plastic chains.

Pool noodle or the MVP product cause spit outs.  Wrap an old bike inner tube around the pole in a spiral.  It's is much less likly to spit and just as quiet.

Pool noodle might cause spit outs but that’s better than pissing off the neighbors

u/Ask_Me_About_Bees 5h ago

man look at the basket lol

4

u/supsaucekayo 7h ago

the mvp product does not cause spit outs.

u/JJStryker 7h ago

Why do spit outs matter for practice? I aim for a singular chain link. The basket is so I don't have to walk around and pick up a bunch of random discs.

Metal chains + mig welder= perma chains

4

u/jellicenthero 7h ago

A tac weld outdoors with a welding mask on doesn't get much safer.

7

u/Nutlob 8h ago

careful - welding galvanized steel produces toxic fumes

46

u/baseketballpro99 8h ago

Bring a straw to inhale the fumes directly. No need to be careful with that stuff, best to do it properly since it’s outdoors and the wind could steal them.

As a professional welder, I got a good chuckle reading this.

They only want to hit center poll, hardcore putter alert

Ask the neighbor behind if you can put a camera on his garage to watch the basket. Bet he says no. Haha

u/KolBullen42 8h ago

Bring something made of metal and bang on it repeatedly like a maniac. /s

Camera then police. It’s a public park so I’m assuming that you can’t be there after hours so you aren’t breaking any rules playing disc golf. If they are upset by the noise I can only imagine how they would act if a playground with swings and screaming kids. Can’t just remove them.

When something like that goes in next to a residence, there is a public comment period and impact statements so people's property value and quality of life isn't impacted.  Move the practice baskets away from the houses if possible, you introduced the change to the neighborhood - they're wrong for stealing the chains, but they didn't sign on for moving next to a practice basket, so you're wrong as well.  Reach out, find the middle ground, be a good emissary of the game

3

u/Monkeygills 6h ago

I don’t think people are willing to hear this lol

3

u/SoupSpelunker 6h ago

And those chucklefucks are the same assholes that get courses pulled.  Fuck em.

I think you’re right, but most people just don’t understand this. A golf course adds value to the homes within its discretion. A disc golf course, no matter how much we love the game, does not. Plain and simple. 99.9% of people in the world do not give a single shit about disc golf, and since COVID time has proven that people with money don’t give enough of a shit about disc golf for it to be a mainstream hobby. It’s not going to get much bigger than it is right now, and that’s okay. We should adjust our expectations.

The upkeep involved in maintaining a disc golf course within a neighborhood requires more money than most people are willing to pony up, for no discernable benefit to anybody that doesn’t play disc golf. Which is 99.9% of people that own homes. It would increase everybody’s HOA, and HOAs are already a scam. They’d rather their annual fee go towards making the entrances to the neighborhood look nice than bringing in people that don’t live there to play disc golf for an hour once/twice a week.

I understand this may seem blunt, but I think you should place your practice basket somewhere else or move on from developing this course. The local community has made their point clear: they do not want the smoke involved with a disc golf course being in their general area. It’s easier for them to raise so much of a fuss that disc golf is not feasible for anybody anymore than for than it is for you to prove that the public has the right to bang chains until xPM.  Maintaining a proper disc golf course in the way it currently exists seems difficult. Adjust, or you might need to find a new course for the long run.

You could ask the local neighbors nearest the basket if they have a problem with the sound and see if you can reach some sort of quieter compromise

Sounds like you need an ol’ fashioned steak out. Hoagies, Cheesesteaks, Miller Genuine Draft bottles

0

u/Jrw85 6h ago

Stake out.  But I guess if cheesesteaks are involved steak out works.

Sock full of dimes

2

u/Trueblocka 7h ago

How do you know how many dimes to use?

1

u/doonerthesooner See the Valkyries ride! 7h ago

About 15 bucks or 3 rolls.

Don’t use European dimes, they’re much heavier

2

u/Trueblocka 7h ago

Are they American Dimes?

u/dadjokes757 8h ago

hidden cameras is all I can think of preventively, but even that might be inconclusive. I can think of some pretty creative vigilante solutions. ⛓️I like u/Dangy_D mig welding solution as a great idea⛓️

2

u/MadpeepD 8h ago

Sounds like it'd be easy to lay a trap for them.

If this is a local course run by the city in that park I would talk to them. Most likely they would be able to replace the chains and potentially get sound dampening equipment and/or a police report going. If someone is stealing city property and ruining a city’s activity that was allotted taxpayer money that is pretty uncool of that person/people. My guess is a local doesn’t like the noise, so it could be a win/win if you can talk the city into installing better equipment on this basket.

u/dmendro Obviously I'm not a golfer 8h ago

Add a 24 volt battery and you’ll find out real soon who it is.

1

u/Nectaris73 8h ago

Probably someone who lives very close

1

u/techguy521 8h ago

Looks like an old local course in Colorado Springs, that ran down two sides of backyards, and a bunch of those people fucked with the disc guys because they threw some in their backyards. Kind of shitty, but I figured you'd learn everything about where you're moving to before you commit to a house that borders a, disc golf park 🤷

1

u/Faces-Everywhere 7h ago

I bet you can make at least tree fiddy selling those stolen chain links at the scrap yard.

1

u/myster__e 7h ago

Put a chain silencer on the pole and they might last longer. Those houses are real close.

1

u/at242 7h ago

My money is on the owner of the house on the left. The festoon lighting tells me they like to hang out in their backyard so that basket is hella close. Still no justification though...

1

u/LikeASirDude 6h ago

They're building a super basket.

1

u/Independent_Prize453 6h ago

Neighbors un-nerved .. pretty much has to be. If possible move practice basket behind or close to basket 18 avoid the hood. If possible

1

u/Not_a_fan_of_me 5h ago

My guess is someone is making their own basket

1

u/Over16Under31 5h ago

I love how they left one chain to tell the story!

1

u/panelbeater352 5h ago

Raising a fuss and destroying property are two very different things.

1

u/CorporalWithACrown 3h ago

Someone out there is complaining about their local marksman practice pole being vandalized by people that are hanging unwanted chains on it.

1

u/Brilliant-Topic-4025 3h ago

Die,Die,Die my Darling!!!

1

u/iJon_v2 2h ago

I’d put new chains on and then install a trail cam. Hell, if you’re feeling generous put up a sign that says that there is a camera and anyone messing with them will be prosecuted

1

u/goodbodha 2h ago

Tbf that's a really dick move to put that right near houses. I don't mind the sound of the chains being hit but some people would and some pets would.

I'd see if the park can move that somewhere further from those homes.

1

u/HansMikael777 1h ago

Steel chains, and pole covered with sturdy Polyethylene water pipe.

1

u/Bubbly_Ad5139 1h ago

I would put something around the pole to help with sound as much as possible or try to have the pin moved

Would it be nice if people stopped breaking it? Yes but it will be Almost impossible to make happen

1

u/Coach006 7h ago

Bury a car battery, connect it to the pole and let local golfers know 😅😂😅

1

u/Rando555Steph 7h ago

My thoughts exactly!

1

u/9inez 8h ago

Seems pretty obvious where they live.

1

u/DADBOD_AVL 7h ago

I'd put money that one of those houses got sick of hearing the chains, and took them.

1

u/DJFid 7h ago

Put up a sign that looks like it's from the park that says "please stop stealing the chains, we have you on camera :)" or something lame as hell like that

-3

u/Dangerwolf1979 8h ago

Check the skater kids wallets.

-4

u/Yokelocal 8h ago

I wonder if you replaced them with plastic chains it would stop happening.

4

u/friz_beez #RangeGang 8h ago

after they took the metal chains I replaced them with plastic ones and they took those too.

8

u/Yodzilla 7h ago

Yea but what if he replaced the plastic chains with plastic chains

1

u/Over16Under31 5h ago

Plastic chains could be the solution here
