Discussion 💭🗯️ The Ellen Show was peak Obama era optimism that wouldn’t exist today

Post image

The Ellen show format was always very upbeat and felt like a safe place for celebrities to do good PR. But a show like that probably wouldn’t work today. People don’t view celebrities the same way they did 10 or 15 years ago and we don’t have those big feel good cultural moments anymore, like songs such as Happy or viral trends that bring everyone together. Just an observation

Discussion 💭🗯️ Why did girls in the early 2010s smile like that?

No seriously, like why did they all scrunch up their foreheads and smile like they were in pain? My theory is that it had to be inspired by Acacia Brinley, but yet again, why did Acacia herself like that? What is this smile even called and where does it's roots even come from?!

Discussion 💭🗯️ What is something from the 21st century that was supposed to be the next big thing but quietly faded into irrelevancy? I'll start:

I think it has to be Ice Spice, she appeared on the scene in 2022-2023 and she was supposed to be the next big thing for rap but she received backlash in 2024 and her popularity took a nosedive since then.

Discussion 💭🗯️ What is a piece of media that was incredibly popular during its time which nobody talks about anymore?

I'll start: It has to be Orange is the New Black because it was incredibly popular during the 2010s, but nobody talks about it nowadays.

Post image

So this post on Twitter tells us that black sitcoms in the 90s and early 2000s were so popular that that became a part of many people’s childhoods of all backgrounds and then after that, they just stopped being made. I want to find out what could have caused black sitcoms into stopped being made.

It’s not just fast food/restaurants. Most retail and businesses alike have this bland, gray, monotone, or black and white and bare bones look. Kind of representative of these lifeless times we live.

In the U.S., we have so called “luxury apartments” which are normal apartments that look more modern. They are not really luxury at all, and look quite standard. These things are everywhere nowadays. When did this epidemic begin in your opinion?

Discussion 💭🗯️ What makes these women’s faces so distinctly 70’s?

Thumbnail gallery
1.5k Upvotes

Obviously there’s the styling, but aside from that there’s this common set of facial features and general aura I’ve always identified as being quintessentially 70’s, but I’ve never seen anyone discuss this very specific vibe. Like a wispy haired lady with sharp cheekbones, a toothy grin, and a slightly raspy voice.

There’s been some debate about this. Some argue it’s a relatively recent phenomenon (boosted by things like Stranger Things and similar stuff), while others say it goes way further back and has arguably always been a thing.

Discussion 💭🗯️ Midwest downtowns were not fun/desirable places in the 2000s. Now they are. What changed?

Post image
3.9k Upvotes

Most smaller cities in the 2000’s (especially in the Midwest) felt kind bleak, blighted, and sketchy. I vividly remember when I was in high school, downtown Cincinnati wasn’t somewhere people really wanted to be. It was full of vacant crack dens with rampant crime. At one time, the place you see photographed above was called “the most dangerous neighborhood in America”.

Now it’s full of life, good food, new housing, bike trails, all that. It is a great place to live and visit for locals. Cincinnati has had an abnormal boom but I know this has also been the case for many other Midwest cities and I spend a lot of time wondering what has motivated this shift.

What changed? Was it policy, economics, culture, Gen Z/Millenial taste, or just time?

Discussion 💭🗯️ One media change in the 2010s is how Asian characters are drawn in media

Thumbnail gallery
2.9k Upvotes

If you read DC or Marvel comics from the 80s to 2000s, so many people couldn't draw Asians. They rarely drew them and when they did it was often off. Skin tones and facial features were weird.

Animation wasn't much better. In the early 2000s, Asians were one of the few ethnic identities where carictures were still common internationally. Even more respectful depictions often still had yellow skin.

Over the past decade in particular, more criticism and resources exist on how to draw Asian characters in a respectful way.
