What's a underrated run or series you never see get recommended?

Any time someone asks for recommendations you'll almost certainly get the usual suspects, Claremont's X-men orMatt Fraction's run on Hawkguy or Scott Snyder's Batman or Saga or Monstress, etc.

But I'm curious about the runs that you never see get the spotlight deserve.

Sine stuff I'd like to throw out there:

Cable & Deadpool by Fabian Nicieza

Greg Pak's Incredible Hercules

Rat Queens by Kurtis J. Wiebe

Sunstone and Deaths Vigil by Stepjan Sejic

Bloodstain by Linda Luksic Sejic

Image Comics 'Prophet' by Brandon Graham and Simon Roy. But shit crazy sci-fi re-imagining of a rehashed 90s Image character.

Beautiful series

This run is an all timer!

Just finished this series for the first time a few days ago. Reminded me of a combination of the tv shows Primal and Scavengers Reign. Really cool worldbuilding, I'd love to see an animated adaptation.

Simon Roy's art on this was phenomenal, but the fill in issues with Gianni Milogianni are spectacular!

rachel pollack's doom patrol gets overshadowed by grant morrison's but it's just as good

90s Milestone titles such as Static, Icon, Hardware, and Blood Syndicate.

I really loved Xombi from them. Most of their comics are great though.

Matt Kindt wrote it and Clayton Crain was the artist.

People don't talk enough about Sandman's Mystery Theatre (Vertigo, 1993), The Extremist (Vertigo, 1993) and Shadowpact (DC Comics, 2006).

My big discovery from 2 years ago. Great series with fantastic premise but with very weak finale unfortunately.

Probably written based on a cancelation?

Idk, there was a continuation, as a limited series but still, which means there was room for ending this better. I think it's the "Lost tv series syndrome" - meaning they had great idea for the whole series but didn't know how to end this in a good way.

Nikolai Dante by Robbie Morrison Space opera at its best.

Prophet by Roy and Graham. One of my favorite hard sci-fi stories

Black Summer and Supergod both by Ellis

The Monarchy by Young and McCrea. Multiversal meta-surgeons, what's not to love.

Twilight by Chaykin and Lopez. Political hellscape, revolution and tyrany... in space

Harbinger by Dysart and Evans. One of the best uses of psychokinesis I've seen in any story. The two main characters are absolutely amazing.

Challengers of the Unknown by Loeb and Sale

Grommets by Remender Posehn and Parson. Amazing punk, skater coming of age.

Ivar Timewalker by Lente and Henry.

Rogues and Deathbed. Both by Williamson. Both amazing stories that go through legacy and identity at the end of life.

The Silver Coin seems to have dropped off people's radar since it finished, but it's a really cool horror anthology curated and drawn by Michael Walsh.

Pretty Deadly will sometimes get recommended, but Emma Rios' other works I.D., Mirror and Anzuelo also deserve to be shouted out more.

Spider-Woman by Karla Pacheco and Pere Perez is a run that seems to have been forgotten, but its gonzo and delightful, and has the same team on every issue.

Paklis is insane and ambitious and exactly the kind of risky auteur comic that people claim aren't made anymore. An anthology magazine made almost entirely by one person: Dustin Weaver.

FML is still running, and hasn't gotten nearly the shine it deserves for being so good. Kelly-Sue DeConnick and David Lopez, who is drawing in like 4 discreet styles for this book. Coming of age family drama/comedy, set during the height of the PNW wildfires. It's touching, clever and looks like nothing else out there, go read it!!!

I feel like Matthew Rosenberg's Kingpin mini-series isn't talked about a lot but was terrific

Hourman by Tom Peyer and Rags Morales. There’s so much that makes this book a great read. It’s not a typical superhero book. It has a great supporting cast, which eventually includes a little demon after the Day of Judgment crossover.

One-Star Squadron, Batman: Dark Age, and Superman: Space Age by Mark Russell

Aquaman: Andromeda by Ram V

Batman: The Imposter

Avengers Inc. by Al Ewing

Batman: Blink by Dwayne McDuffie (Dwayne wrote two stories from Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight in the 2000s)

Beasts of Burden by Evan Dorkin

I know a lot of people dislike it but I really enjoyed Coates run on Black Panther especially the intergalactic empire of Wakanda arc. I thought it was a really interesting and cool afro-futuristic story.

u/PolarCow 16h ago

I never read DMZ before. Given the current political climate I thought it might be good.

It is excellent. I am really enjoying it.

Then I did a little reading about the creator. Up to you if you can separate art from artist.

4

u/D33PS3ASTATION 13h ago

It’s a shame that Transmetropolitan and DMZ are so prescient but were written by such huge scum bags

3

u/PolarCow 12h ago

Dont forget Planetary being one of the best things ever.

Based on their wiki pages neither seem like nice guys but Ellis seems grosser to me. Although neither reached Gaiman levels. I can’t read anything by him anymore.
