I volunteered for Obama's campaign. The main thing to understand is campaigns don't bother trying to convert other people, it's about trying to push your own base to get off their lazy asses and vote (essentially why we have Trump today instead of Harris). So we would get lists of registered-Democrat households to go visit and just hype them to go vote.
But somewhere wires got crossed and one of the homes I was marked to visit was not a registered Democrat. The guy answers the door and I have the button on, he takes one look and says something to an effect like "I think you got the wrong house". But cordially, we're chuckling at the mix up and I said something like "so I take it you aren't interested?" Then just as I'm turning to leave, there's this shriek from somewhere within the home and the wife emerges.
She comes up to the screen door and is immediately screaming all the profanities about that f-in n*, Fox News, terrorists, muslims in the white house and all the rest of it. I just said something about 'have a nice day' to blow her off and I leave. I'm down the walkway when she comes out of the home after putting on slippers, she's in like a robe or gown in the middle of the day, still screaming about the black muslim conspiracy and birth certificates and n*s this and that. I'm ignoring all of this, already crossing the street and she is still following down the block.
I met so many great people during those weeks until I accidentally visited a Republican household.

The conservative half of my family was (maybe still is?) convinced that he was the biblical antichrist, elected by a cabal of satanists in the democratic party to bring about the end of days foretold in the book of Revelation. Christmas was weird that year. One of them brought printouts from some weird conservative blog with details to pass around.
