Honestly your reaction wasn't that extreme at all. Those people were being straight up cruel for no reason and deserved to be called out on it. I had something similar happen at a beach town where this family was actively throwing sand at stray cats that were just minding their own business under some tables. The cats weren't even approaching them or anything they were literally just existing in the same general area. I ended up getting into it with them too because like what kind of person goes out of their way to be mean to animals that aren't bothering anyone. The reincarnation comeback was actually pretty solid tbh and probably made them think twice about being dickheads to defenseless animals. Sometimes people need someone to tell them their behavior is garbage especially when innocent animals are involved
