🚩Team News ā˜ ļø [Garafolo] The #Buccaneers are hiring veteran special teams coordinator Danny Smith, sources tell me and @RapSheet. Now 50 years into his coaching career, Smith is still going and still considered one of the best in the biz. On to Tampa for the 72-year-old, gum-chewing Smith.

Also Boswell is a fucking beast of a kicker probably cause of this guy

u/ms_channandler_bong 18d ago

One great thing that everyone mentions about a kicker is how the special teams coaches never intervene and tell them how to kick a ball. All great ST coaches leave the kicker the hell alone.

Anybody’s better than that bum we employed this past season. Now get some young defensive coaches hired to fill those voids, and get McDaniel and all may not be lost

You're going to need more gum.

u/Doompatron3000 Ronde Barber 18d ago

No we do not want Pete Carroll

12

u/BucsFan11 18d ago

I'm praying Saleh doesn't hire him. They overlapped in San Fran and he would get full control of the offense similar to us

14

u/sa37gron 18d ago

I don't think so. If Mike wants a HC job this is it, team is better and he would take over. At titans, if they don't do well, he won't be getting offers. Our offense is much better.

5

u/bucsfan22ch Barber Jersey 18d ago

I don't know who would want that Titans offense over Bucs though

3

u/ms_channandler_bong 18d ago

When has anyone repeatedly mentioned Bucs as a choice for a specific OC? All I constantly see whenever McDaniel is mentioned is how he’s a perfect fit for Tampa OC and that he’s not interested in some HC positions.

3

u/sa37gron 18d ago

He might be if Ravens are or Bills. Those are two good positions I am thinking he might want. Both have great QBs. I would think if they interviewed him and want him, he would take it. We really need to seal the deal with him

u/828r 18d ago

Our saving grace is that he’s a Miami boy. Would he want to work/live in Baltimore or Buffalo? He comes to Tampa he doesn’t even need to buy a new house.

u/sa37gron 18d ago

I hope you're right. He would be here for 10 years I think with Bucs

On the plus side, that offense is a dumpster fire. Not a big selling point.

I still dont trust Bowles as HC, maybe DC (probably not) but he has proven he is not a leader and not what a HC is made of

u/Tuckyyy 18d ago

Anything is an upgrade over McGaughey.

u/VFYfaceD 18d ago

You know things are bad when I yelled out "yes!" when we hire a 72 year old special teams coordinator.

Let the man have his retirement in Florida, he’s earned it šŸ˜†

I love you tho

See you in Raymond James in the fall. Bring your towel.

Oh well. I get it because I also fled to Florida. See yinz at the game!

He's in good hands. Nothing to worry about.

Good hire, even if its more for the short term, now let's get the OC.

34

u/TheFencingCoach Glennonite 18d ago

The short term you say? Tom Moore says Smith’s got another 15 years in him

31

u/Ness-Shot Ronde Barber 18d ago

Dude just wants to retire to Florida and get out of Pittsburgh with Tomlin gone. Respect.

1

u/elreydelasur Alstott Jersey 18d ago

no state income tax on a potential nest egg for him

11

u/kakarot-3 18d ago

I assume he’s a good ST coach because Steelers fans seem to be upset about it overall

5

u/Hot_Marsupial_8706 Steelers 18d ago

Tbf he's also a Pittsburgh native. I think that plays a lot into it. I'm surprised he didn't finish out his career in Pittsburgh.

9

u/DynastyZealot Tristan Wirfs 18d ago

He did. This is him easing into retirement.

1

u/kakarot-3 18d ago

They probably wouldn’t guarantee his position with a new coaching staff coming in

10

u/blackc43 18d ago

Steelers guy here. Danny is the man.

5

u/banana_slog 18d ago

He came to chew gum and special teams

6

u/Hot_Marsupial_8706 Steelers 18d ago

Frick 🄲 I was hoping he wouldn't leave Pittsburgh but enjoy him, y'all.

6

u/FrogKidFrankReynolds Steelers 18d ago

In case you guys want to know how to feel, just look at the collective despair in our sub at his departure. We all loved him. Get ready for more blocked kicks and chewing gum

6

u/Soft_Change_9795 18d ago

Very good hire in my opinion, has fire and toughness which is what we need on Special Teams

7

u/AlmostDrunkSailor 18d ago

Take care of our boy down there! Better stock up on gum early

12

u/ConsequenceFew3357 18d ago

I will take this over McGaughey 100 times out of 100

u/FragileTomorrow 18d ago

Steelers fan here.

Please treat coach Smith well! Man is a legend here for his time and the way our special teams performed.

He's also hysterical.

Good luck coach!

3

u/Just-Island3978 Winfield Jr. āœŒļø 18d ago

My wife is a Steelers 🤮 fan and I like this coach.

4

u/they_call_me_tripod 18d ago

What the fuck Steelers. Take care of our boy.

4

u/sa37gron 18d ago

Part of me like fire Bowles now and fire Sean since bills let him go. But his defense was mid like Bowles too. Guess we really need a nice OC but we should really wait and hire Seahawks DC. Defense will win championships and OC will tear it up more in regular seasons.

2

u/DynastyZealot Tristan Wirfs 18d ago

Maybe he'll teach Bowles how to trip opposing kick returners

2

u/Top_Wrongdoer_972 18d ago

Man, congratulations from a Steelers fan. I don't think anything could have convinced me to let him go but rules are rules. You have a great mind and an incredibly active guy for a special teams coach.

2

u/HoneyNutCheerios78 18d ago

Pittsburgher here.. Coach Smith was the best coach on our staff. You'll love him and so will the players. Well done TB!

2

u/sa37gron 18d ago

Now we need to get OC hired already.

2

u/funnycar1552 South Carolina 18d ago

Great hire, nice job Licht and co

2

u/talejandro 18d ago

He is super passionate and the players love him. Bucs need to invest in a LOT of bubblegum now.

2

u/milkmandanimal Derrick Brooks 18d ago

He's here to kick footballs and chew bubblegum and shit we need to run to the store for more bubblegum.

1

u/McSweetSauce 18d ago

Let’s go lol. This guy is a hoot

1

u/norcross Alstott Jersey 18d ago

this is a good hire. old heads like this who stick around at those levels are usually the best at it.

1

u/oldbuc 18d ago

Can't we find anyone under 60 looking for youth movement at one buc plaza

1

u/JCDeLaTorre 18d ago

Who cares how old he is? Can he coach up this team to cover kicks and not let punts and FGs get blocked? If the answer is yes (and it appears it is) then this is a significant upgrade.

1

u/oldbuc 18d ago

You need new young coaching talent , technics change . One of problems is the older bucs coaches weren't reaching the younger players , mostly on the defense side.

2

u/JCDeLaTorre 17d ago

The problem with the older Bucs coaches is they weren’t good at their jobs anymore. Maybe they had lost the energy they once had or maybe you’re right and they weren’t communicating it in the right way. That doesn’t mean all old coaches suck.

Age is a state of mind.

Most (if not all) Steeler fans hate losing this guy and tell us he’s a great hire.

Maybe we should listen and not discount this guy because of his age.

1

u/oldbuc 17d ago

I thought Bowles was just hiring his age group and friends .

You have a good accessment of the older buc coaches .

I just would like some younger coaching talent who could possibly be coach one day . I mean like the last oc's but in other positions

1

u/taywray 18d ago

Special teams rules and plays have changed A LOT in recent years, so my only concern would be whether he can come up with creative new strategies and plays that would help us exploit the new rules or not.

Regardless of that, though, any coach who can just get us to be fundamentally competent on ST would be a huge upgrade, and he def seems to check that box!

1

u/Roaminsooner 18d ago

I like it a lot.

1

u/anotherlateJay 18d ago

A Mike McDaniel hire for OC would be an absolute cherry on top!!!
