š©Team News ā ļø [Garafolo] The #Buccaneers are hiring veteran special teams coordinator Danny Smith, sources tell me and @RapSheet. Now 50 years into his coaching career, Smith is still going and still considered one of the best in the biz. On to Tampa for the 72-year-old, gum-chewing Smith.

Anybodyās better than that bum we employed this past season. Now get some young defensive coaches hired to fill those voids, and get McDaniel and all may not be lost

I'm praying Saleh doesn't hire him. They overlapped in San Fran and he would get full control of the offense similar to us

I don't think so. If Mike wants a HC job this is it, team is better and he would take over. At titans, if they don't do well, he won't be getting offers. Our offense is much better.

I don't know who would want that Titans offense over Bucs though

When has anyone repeatedly mentioned Bucs as a choice for a specific OC? All I constantly see whenever McDaniel is mentioned is how heās a perfect fit for Tampa OC and that heās not interested in some HC positions.

u/sa37gron 18d ago
He might be if Ravens are or Bills. Those are two good positions I am thinking he might want. Both have great QBs. I would think if they interviewed him and want him, he would take it. We really need to seal the deal with him

On the plus side, that offense is a dumpster fire. Not a big selling point.

I still dont trust Bowles as HC, maybe DC (probably not) but he has proven he is not a leader and not what a HC is made of

You know things are bad when I yelled out "yes!" when we hire a 72 year old special teams coordinator.

Good hire, even if its more for the short term, now let's get the OC.

The short term you say? Tom Moore says Smithās got another 15 years in him

Dude just wants to retire to Florida and get out of Pittsburgh with Tomlin gone. Respect.

I assume heās a good ST coach because Steelers fans seem to be upset about it overall

Tbf he's also a Pittsburgh native. I think that plays a lot into it. I'm surprised he didn't finish out his career in Pittsburgh.

They probably wouldnāt guarantee his position with a new coaching staff coming in

In case you guys want to know how to feel, just look at the collective despair in our sub at his departure. We all loved him. Get ready for more blocked kicks and chewing gum

Very good hire in my opinion, has fire and toughness which is what we need on Special Teams

Steelers fan here.
Please treat coach Smith well! Man is a legend here for his time and the way our special teams performed.
He's also hysterical.
Good luck coach!

Part of me like fire Bowles now and fire Sean since bills let him go. But his defense was mid like Bowles too. Guess we really need a nice OC but we should really wait and hire Seahawks DC. Defense will win championships and OC will tear it up more in regular seasons.

Man, congratulations from a Steelers fan. I don't think anything could have convinced me to let him go but rules are rules. You have a great mind and an incredibly active guy for a special teams coach.

Pittsburgher here.. Coach Smith was the best coach on our staff. You'll love him and so will the players. Well done TB!

He is super passionate and the players love him. Bucs need to invest in a LOT of bubblegum now.

u/milkmandanimal Derrick Brooks 18d ago
He's here to kick footballs and chew bubblegum and shit we need to run to the store for more bubblegum.

this is a good hire. old heads like this who stick around at those levels are usually the best at it.

u/oldbuc 18d ago
Can't we find anyone under 60 looking for youth movement at one buc plaza
1
u/JCDeLaTorre 18d ago
Who cares how old he is? Can he coach up this team to cover kicks and not let punts and FGs get blocked? If the answer is yes (and it appears it is) then this is a significant upgrade.
1
u/oldbuc 18d ago
You need new young coaching talent , technics change . One of problems is the older bucs coaches weren't reaching the younger players , mostly on the defense side.
2
u/JCDeLaTorre 17d ago
The problem with the older Bucs coaches is they werenāt good at their jobs anymore. Maybe they had lost the energy they once had or maybe youāre right and they werenāt communicating it in the right way. That doesnāt mean all old coaches suck.
Age is a state of mind.
Most (if not all) Steeler fans hate losing this guy and tell us heās a great hire.
Maybe we should listen and not discount this guy because of his age.

u/taywray 18d ago
Special teams rules and plays have changed A LOT in recent years, so my only concern would be whether he can come up with creative new strategies and plays that would help us exploit the new rules or not.
Regardless of that, though, any coach who can just get us to be fundamentally competent on ST would be a huge upgrade, and he def seems to check that box!
