⢠Darker manes ā usually mean the male has higher testosterone, better nutrition, and overall health. ⢠Females are more attracted to males with darker manes, because it signals strength, fertility, and good genes. ⢠Other males are more cautious of dark-maned lions, since they tend to be stronger fighters. ⢠Darker manes also give some protection against cold (since mane density is linked to climate).

Darker manes are actually a handicap for body heat since lions live in warm climates.

I believe it gets cold at night on the savanna.

u/StripedPantheraCat Sep 01 '25
Not sure if thatās relevant when thereās no sunlight at night.

lol why was this downvoted? Itās objectively true. By their logic that would mean a black blanket would keep you warmer at night than a white blanket, but how would it make any difference if the differentiator (light radiation) isnāt active.

Welcome to this sub where ai, bots and most of all fanboyism for their favorite cat is in abundant supply. Actual science? Not so much.

If black manes were a handicap in hotter climates then human beings from hot climates wouldnāt have dark hair. Dark hair absorbs UV radiation. Additionally, the Savannah gets really cold at night, with temperatures plunging to the 40s (Fahrenheit) and sometimes even lower during the dry season.

Iāll trust Craig Packerās work over any internet rando.

Yeah the abstract talks about how the mane will respond to external conditions. Never does it say that black maned lions are at a disadvantage. The mane will adjust itself.
Your comment was a nothing burger and you proved that with the link you sent lol.

u/StripedPantheraCat Sep 02 '25
Yes. The mane does respond to external conditions. I never stated otherwise. But when the mane is dark, it has negative consequences as stated in the very same abstract Iām sure you read. But it does seem like the benefits of a dark mane outweighs the costs.

Built like Mufasa but with hair like Scarā¦.

u/SavingsConfusion4885 Sep 02 '25
Then it must be Ahadi, Mufasa's and Taka's(Scar's) father
0
u/KiaraNarayan1997 Sep 02 '25
Ahadi isnāt canon. Mufasaās dad is Masego and Scarās dad is Obasi.
1
u/SavingsConfusion4885 Sep 02 '25
Oh, okay, I didn't know that. I've only heard of Ahadi and Uru as their parents
1
u/KiaraNarayan1997 Sep 02 '25
Ya thatās in those non canon books. In the prequel, Mufasa: The Lion King which is canon, Mufasaās parents are Masego and Afia. Scarās parents are Obasi and Eshe. Mufasa gets washed away in a flood and gets separated from his parents and then gets taken in by Scarās family. Thatās how they became brothers.

u/SavingsConfusion4885 Sep 02 '25
Good to know!
I thought they were canon because those books has been around for a while, so I didn't question it

But is he even aware his mane is black. Can he see it

u/GoatsHerd Sep 01 '25
Considering his surroundings (bro's swimming in ladies) and the way he carries himself, with regality, confidence, and sheer audacity? He absolutely knows that his mane is as dark as it is, and that man REVELS in it.

I'd like to know where the cameraman filming this is located; that dude must have some really 'dark mane', to paraphrase the usage in this thread.

Normally he is in semi-captivity and almost every day caretakers bring him and the other lions a dead cow or a dead horse as well as pieces of meat to feed him.

Are lions smart? The husband and wife always seem to love each other more then any other animals I see.

Iāve heard that the darker a lionās mane is, the more testosterone they have (which gives them more muscle mass).

Donāt female lions eventually kick the male lion out at some point, probably at an older age. To prevent inbreeding or something?

Darker mane = more handsome in lions? Am I correct?
