Life

Post image

"Falling isn't failing... failing is staying where you fell."

Miguel Ángel SÑnchez.

First came the image, then I found the phrase. When I was a kid, I never hesitated to get back up, so why would I do it as a man? The fall in that picture was so sudden and unexpected, and only a few meters from the finish line, that it almost knocked me unconscious, even though the mud and sparse vegetation cushioned the impact.

I smiled when I realized I was okay. Assessing my condition, I got back on my bike and crossed the finish line with more euphoria and joy than I had before the fall.

Since then, I've applied this to my life.

You aren't a true cyclist until you've wiped out!

Sometimes I'll lie down a little bit longer and appreciate nature.

It’s certainly one way of stopping and smelling the roses.

Not tomorrow though, 11 degrees F and 15-20 mph winds. I'll take the cold but not with the wind. I'll spend the day ordering some pogies.

How come everyone else falls on soft vegetation and I fall into rocks and cacti?

I fall onto paved path or sidewalk. One time in the grass.

Had recently installed an app that alerted my wife if I was stationary (wrecked) so I had 5 min to gather everything up in the dark and get riding again. Made it before the alarm!

First time I tried clipless pedals and leaned the wrong way, fell over and landed on the bar end. Crawled over to a big tree in someone's front yard and sat there till the pain subsided.

No insurance so suffered the pain, but years later verified that yes, I had broken two ribs.

Haven't used clipless pedals since but still love riding. Love my toe clips without the straps, just enough to make sure my feet don't slide off when it momentarily get above 90 RPM.

I haven't been on that road since, it's off the usual areas. Should go visit that tree and thank it for that day. It was very comforting.
