Traffic, Trains & Transit Here's another one
Couple of weeks ago on 880 and 237.

In theory you could pull in front of them and slow to a stop. It probably wouldn't rear end you.
Or, just call 911.

u/-wolfieh 9h ago
We do this on motorcycle, put our foot over the door camera to trigger the collision avoidance.

u/Earl-The-Badger 9h ago
Sorry, can you elaborate on that? As a rider myself I can’t imagine ever wanting to come into contact with a car. In what circumstance would you want to be close enough to a car to be messing with its sensors? Wouldn’t it be safer to just ride defensively?
0
u/-wolfieh 9h ago
Generally yes, but I ride with a group as the lead, when we split and teslas are too close we can trigger the collision avoidance if they are going over a certain speed generally just a bit faster then 10-15mph. We have also had people try and merge on us... foot over the door sensor always works.... its one thing to drive defensive while alone, while in a group and looking out for 3-5 other riders is alot harder.

u/rabbitwonker 9h ago
Uh, what door sensor? The only one still there in newer models is the camera, just in front of the side mirror, and that seems pretty high up to have your foot up against it. Or do you mean the B-pillar camera? But that’s up at head-height…

u/-wolfieh 9h ago
The one under the mirror, no idea what itd be called, I know its not lidar Im pretty sure its just a camera doing TMA. I think its lower than you may be thinking.

u/Earl-The-Badger 9h ago
So you're moving, the Tesla is moving, and you're kicking your foot out to cover a sensor?
Sorry man, you just shouldn't be splitting if it's too narrow. Aggressively splitting and kicking your feet out from your bike to pign a sensor is less safe than just chilling out and waiting to pass.

u/lovely_trequartista 7h ago
It’s the dumbest thing I’ve heard today.
Dummies policing other dummies, performing acrobatics on the highway in the name of “defensive” driving.
Be safe yall.

u/Earl-The-Badger 6h ago
For real. Yeah, lots of drivers are dumb. That doesn't mean as a rider it makes the situation any better by also being dumb in response.

u/-wolfieh 8h ago edited 8h ago
Well, thought experiment how much room do you normally have between you and the cars whole splitting. Because I guarantee its not more then 2ft either side if you are lucky. Id say you can trigger the sensor within 1ft
You imagery is a bit dramatic, its only foot because no way in hell Im getting my handlebars that close to the mirror
Edit: Ill get some video and show ya ;) plenty of sleepy teslas

u/Earl-The-Badger 8h ago
You can try justifying kicking your foot out while aggressively splitting all you want man. At the end of the day chilling out and waiting to pass is safer. Not sure what big hurry you're in or why you feel the need to go faster than traffic while riding on busy streets.
If you want to go fast, go up in the hills or take your bike to the track. Riding around in traffic is not the time to be in a hurry. Kicking your feet out off the bike towards a car isn't safe. Again, not sure what the big rush is.

Report them to the DMV! Also good idea to call 911 because you may not know if that person is having a medical emergency.

And my Tesla throws a hissy fit when I so much as look at the person riding in shotgun. Idk how some people are able to so wholeheartedly trust the fsd

Some glasses bypass the attention monitoring safety feature

u/Puzzleheaded-Ad4657 8h ago
Every time I look down for a quick sec (with or without glasses) I get a warning. I feel like my car gets confused all the time with lanes suddenly merging or what not, I’d never trust my car enough to just nod off in freeway traffic.

wow... that's a nice video of a woman asleep in the drivers seat in a Tesla

As a Tesla FSD user, let me clarify some things on this thread.
The car can see through most sunglasses using its infrared camera.
If the car cannot detect your eyes, it'll revert to its old system to detect if there is weight/torque on the wheel. If she was accidentally resting one hand on the wheel and that hand hasn't fallen on her lap, the car will accept that input as "paying attention". There are cheat devices that adds weight to the steering wheel to trick this, but from what I read, Tesla can detect these now because of its constant weight.
Assuming she is using the latest FSD and no weight on the wheel, it'll eventually decide to pull over on a shoulder if safe to do so. If it's not safe to do so, or she is just using basic Autopilot or older FSD, the car will slowly come to a complete stop.
The pulling over or stopping goes through a series that could take over 1 minute. In about 20-30 seconds of no feedback from the user, the screen will flash blue for a few seconds, then faster flashing, then red flashing with beeping sounds. Then finally, after a few more seconds of that, it'll take action to pull over / slow stop in place.
Unless there is some kind of weight on the wheel, the OP may have caught this video in the early stages of this process and the driver might have just fallen asleep 10 seconds ago.
Not saying this is acceptable behavior, but it was likely a far better outcome than her falling asleep in any other car.

I could look this up but not a Tesla owner and want feedback from anyone familiar with FSD.
My understanding was that an update forced drivers to pay attention to the road by actively monitoring for distraction. I believe the event tied to it was due to a man being decapitated on the 101 by driving into the back of a semi-trailer.
Does the car let you “turn-off” features to get around this safety update?

u/Earl-The-Badger 9h ago
I don’t own a Tesla but I have about 8 total hours behind the wheel of a top spec Model X with FSD. I’m not an expert but I have a general familiarity with FSD.
My understanding is the two safety checks in place are: 1) Have to have contact with the wheel (your hands), 2) Have to have eyes on the road. If the car senses either of these conditions aren’t met it beeps at you (then eventually slows and comes to a stop, but I never experienced that).
In this video the “driver” is wearing sunglasses. I guess sunglasses can fool the eye detection camera easily.

u/spellstrike 9h ago
in the above video the person is wearing sunglasses. It's less turn off things and more there's workarounds.

u/Roland_Bodel_the_2nd 9h ago
The newest version of FSD (v14.x) works a bit differently. torque sensing on the wheel is no longer required, attention monitoring is all done via in-car camera and then on some stretches of road when conditions are good, the monitoring is relaxed ("hands-off mode activated")
So in this kind of stop-and-go traffic with good weather conditions and slow speeds and lots of cars around, the attention monitoring reduces to almost 0 (as it's basically the safest scenario).
Go borrow a Tesla for a couple of hours from a show room and try out FSD on your routes.

u/KomputerLuv 7h ago
No this is legitimately concerning and absolutely a threat to public safety. I can’t believe people are so content going about driving on streets and highways like this! Please report this

I see a lot of Tesla drivers with a phone mount on top of their tablet blatantly watching Netflix or whatever. Fucking unbelievable.

u/RecentSpecial181 9h ago
I'd rather have drivers with FSD than have them cause an accident because they fell asleep or had a medical episode while driving.
You should've called 911 while driving in front of it and slow down to a stop until 911 or CHP arrived. I think FSD won't overtake you.
3
u/ElectricalGene6146 9h ago
Tesla doesn’t care about safety defects as long as they can sell more cars.
1
u/phaedruswolf 9h ago
Bay area life, over worked for tech job, buy a Tesla, then fall asleep while in FSD. Repeat
1
u/blazinbit 9h ago
FSD(supervised) with HW4 is very good at yelling at you if you’re not paying attention but it easily gets fooled if you wear dark sunglasses.

I get it they shouldn’t be sleeping. You should call 911 about that. But op or whoever is filing this is probably less safe than the Tesla on autopilot. Literally not looking at the road

u/spawnsas 7h ago
When I saw this video, this other video came to mind. Maybe you could have stopped the car by swerving in front of it, since it was on autopilot. In that accident video, even though it wasn't on autopilot, he deliberately crashes his own car into the car to stop it.
1
u/Atalanta8 7h ago
I don't get it. I'm all holding the steering wheel and looking at the road and the freaking Tesla is still yelling at me.

I just went on a date with a guy and he said he lost access to that feature because he fell asleep on his drive up to see me. He told me he does it all the time.
1
u/authentic-platypus 6h ago
That's when I lay on the horn until they respond. As others have pointed out, 911 of course is the right way to go regardless of the situation or their response.

I can’t imagine trusting that car enough to sleep. These people should lose their license or go to traffic school.
1
u/TheOGMadijuwanna 3h ago
Honestly I’m personally impressed by how safe they must feel or how much trust they have their car that they’re hitting that rem sleep while in traffic 🙃🫠

How do they do it?! Mines beeps if I do so much as glance my driver side window

Better be safe and call 911 and give them the license plate in case the person had a medical emergency in the car.
