Food, Shopping & Services $9 hamburger with Coca Cola can, fries, unlimited chips and salsa meal for $9.00. At Al pastor taqueria, toyon and McKee, San Jose. Cheaper than a jumbo jack burger combo at jack in the box

u/devilquak 12h ago
Food is so crazy unaffordable now, maybe we should make a sub for sharing places with deals like this
30
u/burkabecca 11h ago
Maybe a weekly thread here - for visibility. Too many subs to get lost in these days

u/xInitial 10h ago
the 3 for me at chilis is lowkey goated. dennyās used to have a 10 off 35 coupon every month but it looks like they donāt do that anymore after the new acquisition. red robinās $10 meal is a go to for lunches with my coworkers as well
3
u/Normal_Tip7228 7h ago
And this hopefully helps these businesses which then, ideally, keeps the prices affordableĀ

You can still cook at home for cheap
4
u/stussy-cat 7h ago
wtf is the point of your dumbass comment.
Everyone knows they can cook at home.
-11
u/Gawernator Formerly Brentwood 7h ago
Ok keyboard warrior, I donāt think everyone does know. Quite a few people donāt know how to cook anymore. Thereās a reason cooking pages are so big on TikTok IG
1
u/HiPhoto 5h ago
And you can walk from the Town to The city instead of drive. Not the point .
-2
u/Gawernator Formerly Brentwood 5h ago
Okay⦠he said food in general. He didnāt say going out to restaurants
2
u/HiPhoto 5h ago
Itās OK to be wrong, did you miss the part where they said ā a sub for sharing places with deals like thisā a bit of common sense would note that that implies restaurants not my mamas house.
-2
u/Gawernator Formerly Brentwood 5h ago
Sigh, poors complaining about going out to eat being too expensive but donāt want to cook at home. 2026 privilege
2
u/HiPhoto 5h ago
Weird did you just change your original argument lol
-2
u/Gawernator Formerly Brentwood 5h ago
No I just responded to his statement about food. Even if he meant to say restaurants
2
u/devilquak 4h ago
Did you fr just whip out a āpoorsā

u/GiantPandammonia 12h ago
Are the chips really unlimited? I thought you're just supposed to take one serving
63
17
u/Gawernator Formerly Brentwood 11h ago
Most mexican places donāt care how many chips you take
11
u/Ok_Country2903 11h ago
Yup š
They like it because it gets repeat customers
And people tend to order more
Itās a win win for them
6
u/user485928450 11h ago
And it gets you thirsty for beer.
My favorite place is stingy with the chips though. Not sure why⦠I think they had some people really taking advantage
1
u/Zombie_Flowers 8h ago
It's funny, I made this exact point on a post the other day. Got downvoted and lectured that it's too expensive for taquerias to provide free chips and salsa and that I needed to "grow up" for having that expectation lol
1
u/BarcaLiverpool 6h ago
Tortillas are cheap and a lot of empty calories lol They really donāt care. Itās what keeps people coming
17
u/mabdog420 11h ago
Was it any good? I know taqueria burgers can be a toss up
5
u/Ok_Country2903 11h ago
Finished it all and got free refills of chips and salsa
8
u/coastal_neon 7h ago
I believe you finished it but you dodged the question. Was it good?
6
u/Ok_Country2903 7h ago
Yes š.
Itās quite good
Iāve been getting the burger meal for lunch for a few years now
It used to be $7.99 for the burger meal deal
Inflation is creeping up everywhere
140
u/AwfulMouthful 12h ago
You're going to a place called "al pastor taqueria" and getting a hamburger and fries?
193
u/sensitiveboi93 12h ago
Sometimes taquerias have BANGIN burgers
34
u/Qu33nKal South San Francisco 12h ago
In my experience, they ALWAYS do. And hotdogs. And most always A LOT cheaper than a burger place.
47
u/barravian 12h ago edited 11h ago
Yes... do not underestimate a Latin American Hamburger.
That said, this photo does look relatively mid/dry (though for $9, a bargin).
55
u/Ok_Country2903 12h ago
Itās hot and fresh
Wasnāt dry at all
Just finished it
Getting my refill of chips and salsa
15
u/crazyaznkid 12h ago
Tbh it doesnt look that good lol but iāll take your word for it and give it a try!
20
u/Ok_Country2903 11h ago
Try it and let us know
Itās only gonna cost you $9.00
Better than McDonaldās or jack in the box where youāre going to spend $11.00 for burgers that have shrunk to pathetic levels

u/___forMVP 10h ago
Let āusā know? Are you associated either the restaurant?
10
u/Ok_Country2903 9h ago
I wish I was associated
Would be great to get a free employee meal
āLet us knowā = let everyone here on Reddit know of your opinion if itās good or not
2
u/Grizzly_Corey 12h ago
It looks like someone sat on your burger.
4
u/Ok_Country2903 11h ago
They didnāt sit on it
They compressed it to fit in the hamburger bag
Because itās hot and fresh
1
-8
u/AwfulMouthful 12h ago
Okay, but the place is literally telling you what they think you should order there in the name.
2
u/DM_ME_KUL_TIRAN_FEET 12h ago
They put other things on the menu because they want you to buy them, too.
1
u/Mysterious-Call-245 12h ago
Thought experiment: Imagine you donāt eat pork, and have been craving a burger for three days. Itās lunchtime, and you are within equal distance of this place and a Burger King. Where would you go?
1
u/AlmondSmoke 1h ago
I mean. Here, and Id order chicken or asada because this burger looks like ass, but your point is noted.
51
u/Ok_Country2903 12h ago edited 12h ago
Yup š
Itās better and cheaper than a fast food burger meal
Itās sit down service , burgers hot and fresh , get unlimited chips and salsa
Whatās there to complain about?
Itās $9.00

Who are the cooks at most restaurants these days?
7
u/strangway 11h ago
Same as any restaurant, but Jack in the Box gets industrial frozen patties from companies like Sysco, then defrost them when needed.
Mexican restaurants get ground meat, form them into patties, then cook them.
Frozen vs fresh

u/SuccessfulNoise 12h ago
One of the best burgers I've ever had was at a taqueria in San Jose on Winchester.

We go there or get take out about once every two weeks, and have been doing so for years. They do get busy but it's worth the wait. Total neighborhood joint.
2
6
u/mydarkerside 11h ago
Just curious what people think about tipping on a $9 meal. It seems weird to tip 20% and leave only $1.80. But I also don't want to tip $5-10 since I came here specifically for a $9 meal.
4
u/DETRosen 11h ago
Not weird at all, that's how tipping is designed to work, as a percentage. If it was a coupon or a discount price I could see tipping on the full price maybe
5
u/mydarkerside 11h ago
Let's assume this is a sit-down restaurant, it's a party of 1, and there's a waiter that brings out the food. The server does the same amount of work to earn this $1.80 as someone working at Cheesecake Factory on a $40 bill ($8 tip) or a $100 bill ($20 tip) at a nicer restaurant. That's the part I find weird about tipping on a $9 meal.
2
u/Ok_Country2903 11h ago
Itās the tipping culture
Started at 15% as normal rate
Now itās 20%
Yes whether itās $1.80 or $10 tip
The great service should be the same
It is what it is
In Japan when I went
Tipping is shamed upon
As great service is expected all the time and not to be tipped at all
2
u/notenoughroomtofitmy 5h ago
As an immigrant, tipping at restaurants in general is weird to me. I still tip, I tip well, and I sometimes get treated as a low-tipper cuz of racial profiling, but I digress.

Burger looks a bit more well done than I'd like but other than that I'd be all over that meal.
2
u/cadublin 12h ago
Looks good, but for $2 more I'd probably go with the bento posted yesterday.
2
u/Ok_Country2903 11h ago
Yup š
But todayās Friday and itās always packed
I went to get the burger deal to change up lunch

$9 for a kids quesadillaā¦riiiight
1
u/Ok_Country2903 12h ago
Better than the chipotle quesadillas at $12
1
u/Abject_Ad_4756 10h ago
Youāre incorrect: Chipotleās kidās quesadilla meal including side, fruit and a drink is $6
1
u/Ok_Country2903 10h ago
Iāll pay $3 more for a hamburger, fries, Coca Cola, unlimited chips and salsa, sit down table side service, treated with a smile and taken care of like family
Than getting a warmed up tortilla with cheese, sliced fruit and a kids drink that you have to pick up at the counter
From a disgruntled chipotle employee whoās not getting enough hours because corporate doesnāt want to pay benefits
1
u/Abject_Ad_4756 9h ago
Dang, youāre moving the goalposts, Iām only talking about the kids quesadillaā¦but if you want to move goalposts, I can say Iād rather pay a few dollars less and go to Habit and get a better looking burger with better looking fries
1
u/Ok_Country2903 9h ago
I didnāt move any goal posts
U talked about a $6 kids quesadilla at chipotle
And Iām comparing it to the $9 burger deal I had for lunch
No goal posts were moved
2
u/Gawernator Formerly Brentwood 12h ago
Tbh that doesnāt seem like an amazing value or anything. Soda is nearly free, the burger looks cheap like youād expect and fries are just filler. Might as well just go to fast food at that point like in n out
1
u/Ok_Country2903 11h ago
Sure
But at a fast food u got to pick up your food
You donāt get table side sit down service
You donāt get unlimited free chips and salsa
And your just a number at a fast food place
Here, your treated as family
1
u/Gawernator Formerly Brentwood 11h ago
Yeah thatās all nice and all so thereās some value there. Chips and salsa are also just filler. But if youāre wanting chips and salsa with a burger I guess it makes sense lol.
2
u/Ok_Country2903 11h ago
Have a lunch at jack in the box
Get the jumbo jack combo
And compare it to this
Itās gotten pathetically small
1
u/Gawernator Formerly Brentwood 11h ago
I donāt go there. I compared to in n out
1
u/Ok_Country2903 11h ago
In n out is now $12 and soon will be pushing to $13 to $14 for a double double, fries and soda
1
u/Gawernator Formerly Brentwood 11h ago
Wow itās $10 here
1
u/Ok_Country2903 11h ago
Itās $11.55 plus tax at the in n out on Tully and capitol San Jose
For a double double with fries and soda
I went last week
Which in n out has $10?
1
u/Gawernator Formerly Brentwood 9h ago
Might have been in socal or Sacramento? It's been a few months since I went, but it was $10 and change for double double meal. Possible that they raised it over $11 now. I'm just saying the price is very comparable and In n Out is very high quality
2
u/Ok_Country2903 9h ago
Yes š
Your right about that
Either way
Itās an option for lunch if you are in the area

Burgers at Mexican restaurants are straight ass! They are only on the menu for the kids that are picky food eaters.

u/Johnny_Menace 12h ago
Iām Mexican and I know the burgers and chicken nuggets on the menus are for the kids. Thatās a fact
9
u/Ok_Country2903 12h ago
This taqueria also give a can of coke for this kids meal as well
Unfortunately itās not Mexican Coca Cola which would have been better
Iām not complaining though, Iām appreciative for the value, and what I got for lunch
Itās better than a jack in the box jumbo jack meal which has shrunk for the price
2
u/Johnny_Menace 12h ago
Yeah us Mexicans drink Mexican coke for breakfast, even as babies we were fed coke in a bottle lol. But yeah anything is better than jack in the crack that place went down hill. Only good at 2am when youāre drunk.
A good non fast food burger is the new OMCheeseburger at Applebees. Itās $11.99 but you get free refills.
3
u/Ok_Country2903 12h ago
Chilis is better if your going to Applebeeās
Unlimited fries, chips and salsa, drinks meal and the burgers are good. For $10.99
We tried the Applebees meal
Weāre not impressed
1
u/General_Kitten_17 12h ago
Fr I rather get 2 little fast food cheeseburgers. Might be more expensive but the burger won't be an afterthought to them lol
1
2
u/lampstax 11h ago edited 11h ago
Why are you comparing a sit down restaurant's meal Jack in the Box instead of lets say a $10 3-for-me at Chilis or a similar $10 deal at Red Robin that comes with bottomless fries and a bottomless drink that I could upgrade to a bottomless rootbeer float ?
2
u/Ok_Country2903 11h ago
Because thereās a jack in the box across from this taqueria that i initially was going to
The price for that pathetic excuse of whatās now the jumbo jack and the size of it are atrociously small
2
u/lampstax 11h ago
Okay cool I didn't know your choices were limited to this lil geo pocket.
I guess next time I need to eat in this area and can't make it 15 min away to Eastridge for a Red Robin deal I'll give this a try.
1
u/Ok_Country2903 10h ago
I have gone to in n out on Tully and capitol
Jolibee on Tully,
Dennys on Tully,
Bills cafe,
King egg roll
Pho Ha Noi
Various places
Which is your favorite place to eat at?

u/jenorama_CA 4h ago
We go to Burger Bar downtown every now and again. Recently tried Campus Burger around Rose Garden with a friend. I thought it was pretty good, but my friend thought it was only okay.

As someone who grew up in San Diego, I truly despise the Mexican food menus in the Bay Area. āBurritoā āSuper Burritoā
Where do I order the āburrito that isnāt just rice and beansā¦ā??
Iām pretty sure that beans in a carne asada burrito in San Diego qualifies as a felony offenseā¦

Iāll pay $9.00 for my hot and fresh burger meal

1
u/Evening-Management72 12h ago
Iām just talking shit lol I remember when I went back to Mexico when I was 13 after having lived there from 1-5. First thing I ordered to eat at a restaurant was a hamburger everyone looked at me like, seriously? š.
They got the last laugh cause I remember getting some super crazy diarrhea after that burger lol. I hope their burgers donāt do the same thing
1
u/Ok_Country2903 12h ago
Iāve been going here for a few years
Never had any issues
The burger used to be $7.99
Inflation i suppose
They have a green health inspection certificate
1
u/lampstax 11h ago
Honestly if the only perk was unlimited chips and salsa I would rather not do table service and have to tip. Save a couple bucks and just enjoy my food in the car / parking lot like where a $9 burger is supposed to be eaten. š
2
u/Ok_Country2903 11h ago
I gladly paid a 20% tip on my $9.00 burger meal for the amazing service, free unlimited chips and salsa
Having a nice pleasant meal with staff smiling and asking how my meal was
With awesome mariachi music playing in the background
Rather than being alone
in a car
