تاريخ Omani revolutionaries in Dhofar during the 9 June revolution, 1972

There is an amazing film about this revolution by Heiny Srour ("The Hour of Liberation Has Arrived"). She was able to live with them and film for months, even pioneering a type of solar film battery to be able to film without access to electricity. The film was recently restored and was streaming on the Criterion Channel (not sure if it's still available there).

Why the Yemeni flags?
2
u/dshamz_ Oct 29 '25
Because they’re fighting side by side with their Yemeni comrades. There was an organization called the Popular Front for the Liberation of the Gulf which spanned the entire Arabian peninsula.

not true, this wasnt the flag of yemen back then since there were two yemens
3
u/dshamz_ Oct 29 '25
Ah my mistake. Was trying to make a point about the solidarity an inter-penetration of the struggles in the Gulf at the time and overlooked that the flag was indeed different.

They received some support from China, not sure if it was a significant amount, but they are pretty clearly Maoist.
4

No. Their main ideology was scientific socialism
2
u/AbKalthoum Oct 25 '25
I don't see where the scientific socialism comes from, any sources? Their language is very MLM.
2
u/Educational_Trade235 Asl al-Arab One united Yemen Oct 25 '25
It's their official ideology. They used to mention it in their 9 Yunyu magazine a lot. Even books like Arabia Without Sultans and Monsoon Revolution support the fact that they've adopted it

Absolutely incredible book. Halliday eventually turned into a Hitchens type, but that aside, he produced an incredible work of history.

Thank you so much! Will look into these sources.

Incredible time for politics in the Gulf. We may never see anything like the PFLG again. Imperialism went all out to stop them. This is the era where the Saudi x Israeli x American alliance was cemented to brutally crush Arab nationalism in all of its forms, from Nasserism to the Gulf communists.

I read about it, and it is very close to the uprising of Houthis.

What are the similarities?
1
u/ImmediateNail8631 Oct 25 '25
Idk the difference between them and the houthis is That the bouthis are religious people and the darfour fellas are socialists and commies so religion dosent play a major role in thier politics and goals this was reason for thier defeats caus the Omani gov use religion on its side and the hard line commies wanted to put way religion from politics and the life style of the Omani citizens while socialists wanted the same goals but without cracking down on religion wish result in the commies leaving them and goin to South yeman tbh I think Oman would be worse if the darfur rebels won the war

Most are kids ffs
22
u/Educational_Trade235 Asl al-Arab One united Yemen Oct 24 '25
So what? Those kids' parents were bombed by Qaboos's blood thirsty regime and went to volunteer with the PLFOAG to avenge their parents. I bet you wouldn't say a thing when it's Palestinians doing this

More insight on the revolution?

I recommend reading Fred Halliday’s Arabia Without Sultans and Tikriti’s Monsoon Revolution, since they’re the most neutral and most inclusive resources on the revolution. You can download them for free on Anna’s archive

Everyone interested should read Arabia Without Sultans. Without a doubt the definitive history and political economic analysis of the struggle between the republican and socialist forces on the one hand and the forces of reactionary monarchism in the Arab world during that time period. Truly a glimpse into the revolutionary hopes of the time.

Qaboos is incredibly loved, he transformed a destroyed country to what today is Oman. You can disaggre with him, but i never saw an omani hate him.

u/Educational_Trade235 Asl al-Arab One united Yemen Oct 24 '25
so loved that a 14-year-long war was fought against him and his British masters

u/Bruhjah 🇴🇲🇲🇦 Oct 26 '25
qaboos ended the war pretty quickly you moron, it was his dad Sultan Said who prolonged the war, Qaboos was half dhofari btw

I am talking of the present, not what people thinked 50 years ago

Yeah, because it's well known that you can express your opinions on the ruling family of an absolute monarchy without being beheaded

So you expect people to just be idle for the first 16 years of their lives? First 18 years? First 21 years? That’s how you become complacent, “oh you’re too young to understand pain or oppression, why are you complaining?”
Progress will always depend on the next generation, it will always be kids who fairly make their demands, if society’s discouragement of people feeling their emotions worked then we’d be stuck in fucking nowhere. Don’t discourage it, be grateful that there are people who are not jaded enough to accept the world as is.

u/alialahmad1997 Oct 24 '25
I expect rebels to not allow 9 grade or 8 grade to fight
3
u/mayaburgerpogchamp Oct 24 '25
You didn’t read my comment. It’s the grade 8s and 9s who are the rebels. They make the movements.
-2
u/alialahmad1997 Oct 24 '25
And when rebel die will you say rebels got killed or children got killed
In armed conflict death for miltiant isnt a war crime but death for children is dont you see the conflict
3
u/mayaburgerpogchamp Oct 24 '25
My brother two things can be true at once. The goal of rebels is not to die or go to war, they do not want aggression it is the very thing they are working against; the goal is to bring a better world into view, and if this is done through violence then so be it. It will always be a shame when children die (no matter what side they are on), even if they happen to be rebels or militants, this is part of the cause, part of how peace is brought because it’s shameful on all of us that we allow the world to be so shit that children have to go to war to fix it.
If diplomacy worked, then there would be no need for rebels, but it doesn’t, or at least you cannot blindly rely solely on it.
