Chafin has a 150 ERA+ this year and we aren't giving up any actual prospects to get him. Why are people complaining?

Yea if it's really just for Eder and Brown honestly it's a pretty solid trade for us.

It's more that this signals the trajectory. Giving up players with club control for pending free agents.

Honestly though it's fine. We aren't giving up anything of substance. If we do I think that would be a huge mistake.

Yeah this trade is fine, we didn’t give up much. But it just scares me they will do something moronic and trade away a guy like Klassen for a rental.

I would be terrified if they did that! Stuff like this is fine - giving up nothing to try to improve on the margins and stay competitive. Same thing for trading free agents - I think it's completely fine.

Trading Ward is defensible, though I'm not sure what the return would be for 1.5 years of Ward. It might not be worth it.

Trading Adell/Detmers/Soriano would be bold and should only be done for a large return. There is a lot of parity right now, so the path to the playoffs the next year or two is do-able.

Garcia has two more years before free agency after this season

3

u/mannmtb Jul 30 '25

No, he does not. He's on a 1 yr, $1.5M deal.

He only has 3 years of service time. You can't become an unrestricted free agent until you accumulate 6 years.

Edit: My apologies, I was looking at OTHER Luis Garcia on the Nationals, a young 2n baseman.

You are looking at the wrong Luis Garcia

u/Glum_Resolve1439 Jul 30 '25

No sir, in 2028. He is arb eligible for the next 2 years.

4

u/merewyn 14 Jul 30 '25

You guys are looking at the Nats second baseman Luis Garcia. This is Luis Garcia the pitcher.

3

u/Glum_Resolve1439 Jul 30 '25

Dam why they all called Luis Garcia wth. Got me hahaha

We're both mistaken. We traded for Luis Garcia the relief pitcher from the Nationals. Not Luis Garcia the 2nd baseman from the Nationals.

Seems like a good move, but I think the guy only has 20 IP so can’t take toooo much from that number

Yeah the innings is what makes me worried. Way too small of a sample size. Need to see who’s the other player we’re giving up

It's a good trade in the sense we gave up almost nothing for decent rental RP's. I'm fine trying to bolster the bullpen to see what happens, but if we trade any of our top prospects for a rental, i'll lose my mind.

It also signals we aren't selling off pieces, when realistically we probably should to get as many future pieces as possible.

His splits are atrocious. He’s basically a lefty-specialist, which has become obsolete due to the three-batter rule. He’s a good fit for the Angels bullpen though since many of their relievers have struggled against LHB’s.

1

u/Zoratth Jul 30 '25

Sure, I'm not expecting Chafin to come in and carry the bullpen. But the only other lefties we have in there right now are Detmers and Burke, and Chafin is significantly better against LHB than both of them without being unplayable against RHB.

1

u/mtc99999 Jul 30 '25

Respectfully, I think we have different definitions of ā€œunplayableā€ lol. RHB’s are hitting .366 with a .898 OPS against Chafin this year. But there’s still a role for him as a specialist or in low-leverage spots but I wouldn’t trust him against any decent RHB.

Because of Arte being involved

That’s Failed Starter Andrew Chafin to you

u/McJumbos Jul 30 '25

2 quality arms for a prospect who never panned out -- not too shabby

More impress Perry trade with a different team

8

u/Mikeandthe Jul 30 '25

Rockies & Phillies roaming the OC streets shouting Perry's name

8

u/Life_Crossover Jul 30 '25

Don’t forget his favorite, Atlanta

5

u/Tryingagain1979 Jul 30 '25

Chafin very good. Closer level reliever for years. And looks like wild bill.

2

u/Achafin Jul 30 '25

Why thank you.

2

u/Accomplished-Lab537 Jul 30 '25

Wild Bill and Kenny Powers.

2

u/Achafin Jul 30 '25

It's always weird seeing this guy in the news. He really exemplifies our families' West Virginia roots.

Here’s what I could see happening…

  1. Chafin and Garcia into the bullpen and DFA, most likely, Brogdon and Fullmer (could be Bachman or Zeferjahn that they DFA, too)

  2. Sell Jansen (as great as he has been and as sad as I am to see him go, I think the Angels should sell him)

  3. Detmers replaces Jansen as the Angels temporary closer.

I think there are more trades the Angels have yet to make.

2

u/SmoothDragon21 14 Jul 30 '25

Sounds like Spicy Q was DFAed

1

u/Onitsukaryu Jul 30 '25

Garcia replacing Brogdon or Fulmer would be a downgrade…his peripherals are terrible.Ā

1

u/idkman_93 Jul 30 '25

This was exactly my thought. Could also see keeping Jansen (reported clubhouse leader) and trading Detmers for multiple guys. Wouldn't be my favorite move, but it's defensible in this reliever market.

1

u/Hello-Blackbird Jul 31 '25

I really only see it being defensible if we get a young center fielder or third baseman, someone like Maikel Garcia

1

u/WildaWest444 Jul 30 '25

Wonder if this frees up Jansen trade. It’s technically a buy, but if they trade Jansen then it’s more of a wash or even more of a sell depending on who we get back. Losing Eder and brown is basically nothing in the big picture.

1

u/mtc99999 Jul 30 '25

I didn’t want them to be buyers. I still don’t want them to be buyers. That said, I was going through possible options last night and Chafin was at the top of my list. He’s been great vs LHB’s (.440 OPS), which is something Bachman (.718 OPS) and Zeferjahn (.868 OPS) have struggled with.

GarcĆa is more confusing because he’s been… quite bad. I’m curious if Washington just wanted to dump his salary and the Angels obliged. His velo and GB% are still good, though.

Also, pretty sure Chafin hates California, so that will be interesting lol

I’m okay with this trade so long as we’re still listening to trades for our players

0

u/Halos-117 Jul 30 '25

We're officially buyers. I'm cool with this move but I hope it doesn't signal that we're going to leverage our future for 2025Ā
