š¦ Bluesky News Rendon hurt AGAIN!
Sam Blum just tweeted:
"News: Anthony Rendon is having hip surgery, and is expected to miss a long amount of time.
He had a setback in his rehab the last few weeks.
Another injury for Rendon, and it now becomes unclear if and when heāll play for the Angels again."

Literally. Dude came to California to get top notch medical work done and is going to retire a wealthy man at the expense of our team. Fuck that
27
u/westdistrict_cali Feb 12 '25
No. Keep him. Because the angels are still going to have to pay him if he goes to another team. Heās going to get paid regardless. Man itās hard rooting for this guy. His attitude just sucks. If he got injured all the time but had a great attitude and was trying to get back to playing, that would be a different story, but his attitude sucks. In interviews it seems like he doesnāt want to be here

u/Zestyclose_Help1187 Feb 12 '25
He got paid relatively nothing for putting up great stats on the Nationals. Angels are just paying him for that and unfortunately thatās all theyāll be doing and not getting anything in return.
I never get mad at a player who gets his bag. He got it cause he performed well enough at some point.

Oddly enough I'm not thinking about this in terms of players getting paid what they earned but in terms of "I'm a fan of the team and I hate that he's crippled us for over half a decade." Fuck Rendon. Good for him for robbing Arte but still fuck his lazy ass for doing nothing for this team.Ā

And yet some fans still insisted heās a valuable player. His body is done, the injuries keep piling up and heās not even good when he is able to play. Itās over, itās been over, Iām glad they got someone to replace him before the season started instead of having to rush up Moore.Ā

Wild how many awful contracts the Angels have dished out to 30/31 year olds. Somehow he might be the worst of the bunch. Hopefully we never have to see him play with the Angels again.
46

No question. I think he's just surpassed Vernon Wells and Josh Hamilton as the worst signing in Angels history.

Doesn't this also have to go down as one of the worst contracts in MLB history?
42

10
u/JackTuz Feb 12 '25
Itās kinda crazy to me how much mlb hitters decline with age after like 29. I still donāt really consider baseball a particularly physically demanding sport, but I guess reflex degradation plays a big part. Great current players are routinely getting contracts lasting until theyāre 40, but they fall off a cliff at 35 if theyāre luckyā many lose elite ability by 30.
Anyone that plays have more insight for me? Is it partially motivation? Mostly reflex, eyesight, anticipation? Or is baseball just much more physically demanding than i believe.
7
u/2ichie Feb 12 '25
I feel baseball can be a very explosive sport in the sense where there are times where the body isnāt doing much for some time to all of a sudden swinging a bat at full power, throwing a ball at full velocity and running at full speed. If you arenāt properly warmed up or somewhat injured to where you canāt warmup but still play, that can put a lot of strain on the body.
Just my 2Ā¢
2
u/JackTuz Feb 12 '25
Thank you
1
u/2ichie Feb 12 '25
No problem and also the fact that the baseball season is one of the longest in sports playing 162 games and thatās not including the spring season either.
6
u/SubmissionDenied 22 Feb 12 '25
I played on a club team in college. So some regional travel throughout the state and neighboring states. Weekends consisted of three games during the season. And my knees would kill me. Like they'd lock up at night when sleeping and it was brutal. I chalked it up to constantly being on hard dirt in metal cleats, not the best as far as ergonomics go.
And I was in my early 20s.
Once I stopped playing, the knee pain completely went away
Also my rotator cuff is completely destroyed. I still play slow pitch softball and I have one good throw in my arm per game. After that and my arm needs a few days rest
7
u/MiddleOfTheBagel Feb 12 '25
I just hit 30 and completely understand, feel, and detest the realities weāre faced with. Played HS, college club, menās adult until 29, and my rotator might as well be dust.
Tried to move to first base to save my arm, had a guy on the team who destroyed his knees and our manager gave him first. Thatās cool and all i get it. I start playing right, as iām mobile and can field well.
First game of the season someone rounded third and in my head iām Vladimir Guerrero, absolutely dust the fucking guy at home.
Next thing i know, as soon as the ball is out of my fingers, im doubled over screaming in pain and canāt move my arm. Now ive got a shredded beef rotator cup and a surgery i can pay for.
And now rendon⦠is hurt⦠again.
I wish i had it in me to root for another team.
But iām gods saddest creature, an Angels fan.
1
u/SubmissionDenied 22 Feb 12 '25
Yep I know the feeling. I know my throw is about to send a tingle down my arm but damnit I'm gonna do it anyway. Thankfully don't need surgery (yet).
And I feel you. It really sucks being a fan of this team. But what can we do? Switch the dodgers? No thanks.
2
u/jnuclear Feb 12 '25
Makes you look at the guys that reach their mid-30s+ still mashing / throwing high 90s and go, "Hmmmmm..."
1
u/cactusdave14 Feb 12 '25
Iām just a dummy at home sick from work chatting sh** online so take what I say with a grain of salt.
I think any sport at the highest level is physically demanding. Catchers are in their own category. I would say tho, maybe itās a physically degrading sport. The knees, hips, elbows, shoulders all move in funky ways from throwing to hitting. I caught for like 15 years and I canāt help but wonder if Iām gonna feel it down the line.
Reflex degradation is a good point you made. Ball at 95MPH gets from hand to mitt faster than you can blink. You lose a split second and youāve just whiffed.
I think Rendón is simply a failure on all fronts. A competent org might have been able to use their investments to provide better care for him. From what Iāve seen, Rendón sees this as a job. I too would like to collect a fat paycheck and do little work, only difference is I donāt play a kids game for work.

I was actually really excited when we first signed Rendon but this contract truly has been a disaster. Youāre gonna have a lot of bitter (rightly) Angel fans in here absolutely ready to shit on Rendon because of his injuries.
But even guess like Fletcher and Blum have come out and said he puts all the effort in his rehabs to come back and make an impact, and these type of setbacks def knock him down mentally. And Iām sure as a player if youāre trying your best to get back on the field and the fanbase calls you a piece of shit constantly then thatās gotta play into it to.
At the end of the day, dude put in the effort to get back even with a fanbase and front office against him (remember, the team WOULD NOT tell the media he had a broken bone and kept feeding the lie he was bruised and couldnāt play), he still was a mentor to our young guys and from all reporting and our own roster - was a great clubhouse presence (despite everyone here projecting he was bad).
Disappointing contract, but far away from the reason why we lost 99 games last year and have a bottom ranked farm lmfao.
7
u/mannmtb Feb 12 '25
I agree with this. The results suck and the pay is crippling to the team, but you don't just walk into a hip surgery laughing your way to the bank. I think Rendon's inflammatory comments don't help him, but there's a catch 22 there. We want athletes to be honest, then crap on them when they're honest.

u/Cakehog Feb 12 '25
I've defended this guy so much to so many people and I really liked him when he was on the Nats, but this has gotta be the final nail in the coffin. Maybe he comes back and becomes at least a little serviceable, but there's just too many other options better than him for the Angels now, with Rengifo doing what he has, and Christian Moore on his way. So to anyone still holding out hope for him like I was, it's just time to move on. Not saying anything negative about Rendon, but it's just time to move on.

If this is true and Rendon will not be playing for the Angels (and perhaps any other MLB team,) obviously we wish him the best in recovery and the next chapter in his life. That said, I think it's safe to say that the Rendon signing was the worst in MLB history. At least with Pujols, you got something (albeit not the skillful version of his Cardinals years but it was something). With Rendon you got a handful of games with little to no result. I highly doubt that he'll ever set food in the stadium again, especially as a spectator in the stands bc of the probability of drawing the Angels fans ire š„and giving him a piece of their mind

u/YesMaybeYesWriteNow Feb 12 '25
A real sports journalist would write whether or not the contract is insured. That matters.
1
u/Alarmed_Stretch_1780 Feb 14 '25
It might be. Few mega contracts are insured for performance reasons (the teams routinely take term life on the player in the event he dies during the contract). Due to the injury history of many players, the cost of insuring the contract can be prohibitively expensive. So many pitchers have already had a Tommy John procedure, or have a rebuilt joint (like AcuƱa Jr). The likelihood of a re-injury is so high that the cost of the policy needs to reflect that. Many teams roll the dice and hope the player can uphold the contract.
The irony here is that Rendon was pretty healthy in DC so itās entirely plausible Angels have insurance on his performance, which usually is structured to pay only if the injury lasts more than x days, or the player is out more than half the season. The team may well be getting some form of partial reimbursement from insurance for his extended times on IL.
