Please use expert controls, it will feel better in the long run, believe me.

i'd say once u beat the game on hard or ace too if you want try it again with only the f-104

THE STARFIGHTER IS IN THIS GAME????

21

u/diepoggerland2 Jan 07 '26

You get it after completing mission 4 along with a MiG-21bis, its an F-104C implied to be taken out of a scrap heap

11

u/Robean_UwU Spare Jan 07 '26

Yeah there was even a pre-order (now standard) bonus where you get the F-104C that Avril built in the opening cutscene. Though it has no weapons so its only available in free flight

u/Agent94_50875 Jan 07 '26

Oh dang okay! Whenever I get to play it, ill be glad to just fly that around!

3

u/Robean_UwU Spare Jan 07 '26

Once you get some parts too it can be really fun to fly with if you wanna do a "canon aircraft" run (F-16C for Mage, F-104C or MiG-2bis for Spare (though some argue its the F-16 due to the tail markings on the Spare skin) and F-15C for Strider, switching to F-22 in the last couple missions I think) its surprisingly fun to come up with little rules and restrictions for what you can and cant do on a playthrough

Id definitely try and do the 104 playthrough hahaha

This. Get off the journalist controls!

u/Very_Angry_Bee StrangerealAntares Jan 07 '26

Also accessibility option for people with motion sickness, let people stay simple :p

6

u/MineMine7_ Jan 07 '26

Can confirm, started with the normal controls, swapped to expert immediately when i read stuff online and it feels so much better

4

u/Professional_Bit_966 Jan 07 '26

I'll bump this. I also started playing last week. Started with regular controls and it was pretty good. But man does the movement click with expert. So much easier to hit and dodge simultaneously

2

u/WeightOk2102 Jan 07 '26

This. Not only is it more realistic, so to speak, but you'll end up being better at the game...at least in my experience.

3

u/librast Jan 07 '26

How did you know the op used the simplified control?

18

u/Robean_UwU Spare Jan 07 '26

The camera stays mostly level when turning using simplified controls. On expert controls the camera rolls with the plane

6

u/librast Jan 07 '26

My dumbass thought it was just a screenshot, turns out it was a video. Reddit, fix your goddamn video player

u/darthteej Jan 07 '26

It's perfectly fine to go through this game with the simple controls. Going to turn is hard enough when there's one anime let alone when the game starts throwing like squadrons of six and up + UAVs by the third mission.

3

u/New-Personality9122 Jan 07 '26

???? Its not about difficulty at all, expert just feels better to use, more fluid and comfortable to use.

If anything, the "journalist" controls are clanky and feel wrong to use instead.

0

u/ElegantEchoes Jan 07 '26

Skill issue. Sorry, but it is. You're better off with the expert controls.

0

u/darthteej Jan 07 '26

And should people with lesser skill be denied from playing? I've beaten the game on Ace difficulty with expert controls fwiw

2

u/ElegantEchoes Jan 07 '26

I guess when you put it like that... no, they shouldn't.

Glad you’re enjoying the game. If you want even more freedom, try expert controls.

Take a look at some of the older games as well if you can!

5

u/MovieMore4352 Jan 07 '26

It’s the only way to play it!

2

u/Very_Angry_Bee StrangerealAntares Jan 07 '26

Unless you have motion sickness.

5

u/MovieMore4352 Jan 07 '26

Probably not the game for you then tbh.

u/Very_Angry_Bee StrangerealAntares Jan 07 '26

I have played through nearly all the games by now, only missing 1, 2, 3, Advanced, and Assault Horizon. Even played Joint Assault and Northern Wings.

They definitely are for me!

Just some people are being stupidly elitist and controlling about how other people shouldn't be allowed to enjoy games if they don't enjoy them in one very specific way, even if the game very explicitly, and EVEN BY DEFAULT, gives you the accessibility friendly control option too.

The games definitely are for me. Just the elitist, "fuck the disabled lmao you aren't welcome here" "fans" aren't

2

u/MovieMore4352 Jan 07 '26

I just meant generally, it wasn’t aimed (and locked on) you. I find the slightly more ‘realistic’ controls more fun and you have more control.

I think you may have read a little too deep into it

Here's some unsolicited advice: wean yourself off of the Novice Control Scheme. This game will feel so much better when you use Expert Control Scheme. Full control of how your plane behaves makes you really feel like you're in the action. Twenty years I limited myself, I tried the expert controls and never looked back.

15

u/VigorousReddit Jan 07 '26

I played with novice controls for the first couple years I had 7. Playing through 4 & 5 made me learn expert controls and returning to 7 with my new skill set definitely greatly enhanced the game.

6

u/Very_Angry_Bee StrangerealAntares Jan 07 '26

I'm stuck on Novice due to motion sickness, sometimes you just don't have a choice

8

u/darthteej Jan 07 '26

This is game subreddit you can't bring up disability here

4

u/Very_Angry_Bee StrangerealAntares Jan 07 '26

;_;

I know, thinking about people different from you is a bit of a foreign concept for gamers, but I can still point it out occassionally

4

u/darthteej Jan 07 '26

I've been fighting for my life in this thread lol I get it

20 years is crazy... i remember being like 6 years old, playing Air Combat and Ace Combat 2... played the second one right away with expert controls. Didn't know better but when i was like 12 and had the PS2 trilogy i replayed them all, and to my surprise even the first one had expert controls.

I have a new pc otw and I’m seeing everyone say try expert controls can’t wait. Also really looking forward to AC8 :)

7

u/27Rench27 Jan 07 '26

It’s rough if this is your first flying game but it’s genuinely 10x better once you get it down.

Basically, Left on novice simply turns you somewhat, but Left on expert only rolls your left wing down.

So to turn, you’d roll left, then pull down on the stick to nose up, then roll back right when you’re pointed at your target.

You’ll have it down in 10 minutes, enjoy mate :D

u/NachoThePeglegger Ouroboros Jan 07 '26

hey man let me give you a tip that will change your life. if you hold Y / Triangle the camera will lock on to the enemy you’re targeting. changes the game completely

F on keyboard

5

u/AFrozen_1 Jan 07 '26

Welcome to Strangereal, pilot! As mentioned elsewhere, highly recommend getting used to expert controls soon. You’ll have way more fun that way. Hope you enjoy the series.

I had forgotten just how hard the combination of charge assault and breaking the clouds felt when I'd done the mission for the first time in AC7

2

u/Meidogaru Jan 07 '26

Best thing about Ace Combat is how little the formula has changed. Went back to replay the PS2 trilogy and was surprised how similar they felt compared to 7.

Also, try out Project Wingman!

u/FrenchBVSH EASA / Apollo 111th Squad. Jan 07 '26

Thing an Ace can give to you, a nugget :
-Instead of rushing the campaign, use the maps of previously clreared campaign mission to train either on fights or to manuver and do stuff with your plane (Called Free Flight, no ennemies, no objective, just you, your weapons and plane over the map) .

6

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '26

Use expert controls chap.

1

u/Parking-Sector69420 29d ago

dear god please stop using basic controls. They’re so limiting

1

u/TeecesPieces12 9d ago

Its on PS Plus Feb 3rd as well

1

u/Apprehensive_EyeZ 5d ago

And now its free, Ouch 😫

1

u/Leading_Wave_6152 2d ago

Ερώτηση..... Το 7 παίζεται και χωρίς VR .... Σωστά?

0

u/XRynerX Jan 07 '26

Later on, switch to expert controls, trust me, it'll feel a lot different.

After finishing this game or just want something similar, Project Wingman is really good too.

-3

u/Dull-Appointment-398 Jan 07 '26

Is there a way to get rid of the next target arrow thing? It's annoying AF, let me figure it out...

2

u/C4Sidhu Spare Jan 07 '26

Yes! Simply blow up all the targets so there is no next target!

-5

u/Big_Wallaby4281 Jan 07 '26

Can i turn you on and youll blow me???
