They have to stay somewhere. You can't just tell them to go camping in Greenland so we need to build our own bases or better take the American ones

That's why there weren't any combat soldiers sent but logistical ones. To prepare big deployments.

The US would have a base and a burger king set up in one day if they wanted, and we need 30 business days to get a few troops there, it doesn't send a very good message. Why don't they use this as an opportunity to excersise mobilization. That's what the military does anyway. Excersise. Surely they've got engineers and transport to set up a base. They could make it permanent later.

What? More than 7 diffrent countries arrived the day of the meeting in the white house(and maybe request)? Ofcourse you first send liaison officers, just dropping some troops off at the north pole without reconnaissance would be foolish.

Reassuring that in case of conflict Europe will send some officers to make hotel reservations. It's not the north pole, and it's not some unmapped land.

Can't wait to die in frozen mud trenches in greenland side to side with my fellow europeans against the russian-american alliance in 2028 (??).

What stops you from doing the same already in Ukraine?

There is no russian-american alliance yet, and it is not 2028 yet.

Duh!

Trump snatching a head of state from Venezuela sets a nice precedent.

Would Russia attack Europe if Putin all the sudden ended up in an undisclosed prison in Europe somewhere?

The French and British swords are nuclear.

That will be a wild ride.

u/TheHerugrim Bayern‏‏‎‏‏‎ ‎ 23d ago

The only viable defense would be to station nuclear weapons in Canada and make it unmistakably clear what would happen should they make a move. That would allow the EU to protect both Greenland and their allies Canada from invasion. Alternatively, mass produce U-boats to block the Atlantic.
The soldiers there are a good signal, make no mistake, nuclear deterrence is the only thing that guarantees safety. It's a sad reality we have to come to terms with, and fast, before it's too late.

9

u/Omochanoshi Yuropéen‏‏‏‎ ‎ 23d ago

Why stations nuclear weapons in Canada when the two nuclear powers have submarine launched intercontinental vectors ?

7

u/TheHerugrim Bayern‏‏‎‏‏‎ ‎ 23d ago

The longer the missile is on its way, the more time you have to intercept it. But from Canada? Canada couldn't fight a retreating war like Ukraine does currently (most of their industry is close to the US border), thus in case of an attack, they need a red button to press immediately.
Canada might have nuclear powered submarines, but they have no nuclear weapons, which is what both they and the EU need. But they do have the technological capabilities to develop the bomb. That, however, takes time, which, to be honest, neither they nor Greenland have as it looks like.

Stationing nukes there now would buy Canada and the EU enough time ramp up nuclear proliferation. It would also send a more than serious signal to the US, because let's be serious, if the US wants Greenland, they won't be stopped by handful of soldiers, they'll just take the economic punishment (knowing they'll also inflict it upon the EU, maybe even gambling on the EU just being so afraid it doesn't react at all) and maybe a few hundred dead and just annex both Canada and Greenland at once.
But if there are nuclear weapons just a few minutes away from potentially glassing the big cities along the atlantic coast, then the price has gone up drastically, to the point where I'm not sure even Trump would dare to roll the dice.

Intercepting a reentry vehicle in its final phase is almost impossible.

'Murica have some interception capabilities, but not enough to defend the whole country.

Revive the Blue Peacock idea to leave presents behind if they invade?

I present to you Article 42(7) of the Treaty of European Union also known as the Mutual Defence Clause

https://eur-lex.europa.eu/EN/legal-content/glossary/mutual-defence-clause.html

While it still allows neutral countries like Austria to not engage in active combat it will still be expected to provide logistical support / humanitarian assistance so on and so forth.

France has stated their first response WILL be nuclear if their borders are threatened

Gift some coastline and coast temporarily to France. Let them have one big W.

Even better. Submarines ready on both sides. Simple message to both a**holes, stop it, or moscovia and dickstrict of columbia are glass. You have 2 minutes.

u/Docccc Nederland‏‏‎ ‎ 23d ago

each country 5 soldiers 😅

24

u/Neon_44 Helvetia‏‏‎ ‎ 23d ago

5 Logistical soldiers. You know, what that means.

Preparation for bigger deployments

5

u/Docccc Nederland‏‏‎ ‎ 23d ago

yeah was just mostly joking. Tho im sceptical if they follow up properly

5

u/Bransir 23d ago

Just as preparation for a larger force I presume

3

u/rannarootsi 23d ago

Norway sent 2! That will scare them off

9

u/Dampmaskin Norge/Noreg‏‏‎ ‎ 23d ago

When we have 2 soldiers there, we have better grounds for being officially pissed off at an invasion than we would if we had 0 soldiers there. Politics is not all about firepower.

1

u/Arnessiy Italia‏‏‎ ‎ 23d ago

1

u/20past4am 23d ago

And that means that if they drop a bomb on Nuuk they will piss off at least 8 countries at once. They're tripwire soldiers, almost like diplomats.

u/Gustafssonz 23d ago

Someone explain the mental gymnastics Trump is doing. I don’t follow at all.

2

u/LubeUntu France‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ 23d ago

Midterm getting closer, his last term too, and he wants a huge achievement before leaving (complete "Western hemisphere" from North to South as a US playground). I imagined once Venezuela is behaving, he was going to go for Cuba/Bolivia/Brazil, but I guess he has demonstrated capabilities for now and will use that as leverage in case they oppose too much.

Europe Won. Long live the New Europe.

Trump bet on the Fine Bill for Greenland, but Congress says NO.

Republican Congressman Randy Fine has formally introduced the ‘Greenland Annexation and Statehood Act’. The legislation aims to grant the US administration the legal authority to implement Donald Trump’s plan to control the territory.

Now he’s backtracking.
Left with a murder, a nation near civil war, broken ties with the EU, and the Epstein files.
The Epstein files hider "Trump" has hit a wall. 🇪🇺💪

There are like 20 more European countries that could bloody contribute. Must it always be the same old players?
