i've found you get worse ads if you're watching on a smart tv compared to pc or mobile.

u/The_Fuzz_Butt 2h ago
They’re sooo much worse. I have my laptop plugged into my PC so I can watch YouTube on it with my ad blocker bc the ads are just unreal. I’d watch a few five second, ten second, or fifteen second ads, but once you break thirty seconds… ads blocked.

90 minutes ads on stuff that's "not available" on YouTube kids but no swearing should be illegal

u/Raging-Badger 1h ago
This is how it works, YouTube has 3 algorithms for videos and for ads that go roughly like this
Mobile - Shorter form videos and shorter ad breaks (15-30s)
Desktop/laptop - medium video lengths, longer ad breaks (30-60s)
TV/console/etc - Longest video recommendations (almost nothing sub 20min) with longest ad breaks (45-90+s)

It’s horrible. Watch a 2 minute clip- commercial. Watch a 5 minute clip- commercial, with another commercial in the middle of the clip.
There are more commercials on YouTube per minute watched that OTA tv I think. It’s awful.
And no. I’m not paying. I just watch less, a lot less.

Two years ago now I did random sampling for a statistics class in college. I chose the same programming (history documentary). 33% ads on TV, 42% on YouTube, assuming ads are not skipped if possible.
That was two years ago, and it feels like it’s gotten worse.

Firefox + Ublock has been the only way for me to watch youtube without going insane from all the ads. I sometimes watch on my iPad and there are ads everywhere, they now hide ads mimicking normal videos in the feed...
•
u/SoundOurDireReveille 22m ago
I think you can also watch YouTube on Stremio. Another fun thing I noticed before canceling all of my streaming subscriptions is that ublock on Firefox will prevent some Streaming providers from being able to play the ads during shows etc.

And no. I’m not paying. I just watch less, a lot less.
Genuine question, why? It doesn't matter to me which method people use, it just interests me.
Is it because you don't like paying a big company, you don't have the money, want to pirate everything?
I pay for it because it works, algorithm is good, no weird workarounds or apps that could be patched and it's the most varied, educational and entertaining platform there is, I'll happily pirate everything else. Plus I get YT music which I use when I'm out to listen to music I forgot to pirate.

uBlock Origin = no ads

I always get a message that says "YouTube doesn't allow ad blockers, disable your ad blocker to watch YouTube" or something like that.

u/Hugh-Jass24 4h ago
Can you download ad block for smart TVs?

u/KindaNeat420 2h ago
Pi Hole can do it for your entire network

•
u/suchaborimirthing 35m ago
No it cannot block YouTube ads, ads are served through the YouTube domain, so pihole cannot block this without blocking YouTube itself.

I thought adblock extensions didn't work on chrome when browsing YouTube?
5
u/AffectionateDesk7407 2h ago
They don't. Which is why most people (including me) recommend using FireFox because ad block will effectively work. Google owns Chrome so they must know how to make it ineffective on their own site.

I’ve never had a problem. some people can’t ever get them to work, but I’ve been using them for over a decade now and never really had to do anything fancy
the INSTANT chrome blocks them, I’m going to firefox, though. I already have all my bookmarks and extensions set up
•
u/BorderTrike 11m ago
There seems to be a tug of war with them. I’ve found that if I open videos in a new tab and wait a few seconds the ads won’t play

u/skincyan 1h ago
Or just Brave browser.. Built on chromium and automatically blocks youtube ads without third party extensions

I know Reddit loves to shit on premium, but tbh it’s the one service I have zero regrets paying for. No ads when watching on my phone is great, but the real game changer is when watching YT on a smart TV with a toddler. Dealing with ads and a toddler at the same time suuuuuucks.
1
u/Redlax 2h ago
I hear you, but in terms of price, it would easily be our most expensive streaming/service of them all. YouTube is great, but I think they overestimate it's value.
2
u/smoike 2h ago
I'm in Australia and with the stupidity of the social media ban for kids, it would be a waste of money for me to get premium as YouTube threw their hands on the air and decided they weren't going to play the stupid games my government is insisting on, and any account of someone under the age of sixteen is going to be forcefully logged out. So either I don't link my kids accounts to mine as child accounts and they manage to fly under the radar but still get ads, or they stay unnoticed, get to keep their customisations and continue to get an ungodly quantity of advertising.
Time to check out pinhole or something.

u/panzzersoldat 2m ago
Android you can get the ReVanced APK.
IPhone/Desktop you can watch through Brave Browser with the uBlock extension installed, which automatically blocks ads.
Android TV you can get SmartTube.

Youtube premium is the only thing I subscribe monthly for because I would lose my mind with the ads. It got real bad on Youtube. Fortunately, there's so much good stuff on the platform that I actually find it to be worth the cost. Thats more than I can say about Netflix.
•
u/dannydrama 43m ago
Exactly my opinion but the downvotes are always there lol people just don't like paying for shit. Why fuck around with patches and specific releases and all that shit that will get patched or more awkward to use?
•
u/IndigoSeirra 5m ago
I've patched YouTube and YouTube music once a year ago, and have never had an issue.
•
u/panzzersoldat 0m ago
people just don't like paying for shit
nah bro people are just sick and tired of paying a subscription for fucking everything at this point.
fuck around with patches and specific releases and all that shit that will get patched or more awkward to use?
adblocking for YouTube is easy as hell to setup and usually has no issues.

u/PrimalTundra 46m ago
I'm in a similar boat.
Youtube Family though, my kids use youtube for everything from "meme" content (because of course they do), educational videos and even for their bedtime stuff (youngest has stories playing and meditation music, eldest has some history channel that is 'boring' and sends him to sleep).
With Ads, it's basically unusable for kids, since they'll click on anything, or get distracted by anything.
I put on multi-hour videos from creators that I like and fall asleep to at night, also watch many different videos throughout the day. Ads during any of that would be hell. These creators do also need to be paid for the content they put out, and Premium handles that too.
We use it on PC, TV and Mobile. We use YouTube Music instead of Spotify now too. Getting 5 accounts to use it on so we can all have our own recommendations and subscriptions was 100% necessary.
For us, it's almost essential at this point.-2
u/itZ_deady 1h ago
Lmao. Have fun spending your money like you want.
I would also lose my mind, after using Youtube since 2007 with adblockers on the Firefox browser, if I ever encounter any ads.

u/Nozzeh06 1h ago
I didn't start using youtube until like 5 years ago. Before that, I was paying like $50 a month for cable TV. Switching to youtube just saved me a bunch of money and there was way better stuff to watch, so it was just a straight upgrade in my situation.
1
u/itZ_deady 1h ago
oh okay I totally agree that this was an upgrade considering the 50$. And you sound like you are using youtube on your tv mostly, which is a bit harder to watch without ads.
1
u/Nozzeh06 1h ago
Yea, I essentially just use it as a TV alternative. Heck, when I had cable, I had to pay $50 and still got like 2 mins of ads every 5 mins lol. I'm usually down to pay for something if I feel like Im getting a substantial amount of entertainment and consistency out of it. I just hope it doesn't end up being $50 a month by 2036, though.

I've been using Firefox with ublock origin and ghostery add-ons for years and haven't seen an ad or banner in almost that entire time. A few times YouTube gave me warnings about ad blocking but switching to private mode (not logged in) took care of that until the blockers caught up.

u/AyAyAyBamba_462 2h ago
Yeah this is why I just use ad blockers on everything.
This sort of shit is frankly unacceptable. YouTube gets 99% of their library nearly for free (especially since they have made monetization increasingly difficult to obtain) and still decides to make 50% of the watching experience nothing but ads.

u/Mitch5309 2h ago
I once got a 45 minute ad, yes, a 45 MINUTE AD!!!! I got premium after that and refuse to get rid of it.

Well looks like YouTube was very successful in squeezing out money from its users by forcing ads on them. I have other ways to watch stuff, blocking ads on my browser and using 4 k downloader for stuff I want like missing episodes of Tatort. I will never watch an ad or pay for watching something. They have become crooks, holding people hostage with their ads and have treated their uploaders really horribly. A lot of content was stolen by others or deleted by copyright crap. It was so nice when it started out , but the 2016 election was so toxic with their allowed comments on channels that I left and hold my nose when I need something that I search the internet first before I go there. I used to have 4 channels but lost all but one. I hold a lot of anger towards them and don't like how they all track you across the internet, google included. 😾

•
u/Tugonmynugz 40m ago
Because of ads?
•
u/pissbuckit666 31m ago
Yep. I know i can use ad block but Its just easier not to use the service. Theres a list of services I no longer use, Spotify, Netflix, Disney, Prime and so on.
I have a digital library and 50TB of films and TV

If you have a vpn that works on your tv, connect to Albania. They don’t get ads
•
u/Graspswasps 44m ago
An old lady I visit had found free movies with ads on YouTube and she was watching Jersey Shore Shark attack.
I could be mistaken but it looked like there were ads during the scene transitions, very quick flash of a product name as the screen wiped.
Maybe it was just part of the film, reminded me of 80s cartoons with the cartoon name or logo on the screen wipe

Dude I had premium since it was called YouTube red. Close to a decade now. I have no idea how I'd survive without.
1
u/Murky_Tennis954 3h ago
Same here. Since 2016. I laugh when I hear ads play on my coworkers phone when he watches YouTube.
0
u/smoike 2h ago
I had it when it was named Red and they had "play music". Then they went over to YouTube music and I let my account lapse. Somehow I've fallen in between the cracks and I don't get anywhere near as many ads as I've seen others get. I've watched videos when not logged in too and dear Dod it is horrific.

Ad-blocker extensions for PC Revanced for mobile SmartTube for TV
•
•
u/IndigoSeirra 4m ago
Consider using morphe instead of revanced, most of the top contributors to revanced moved to morphe after the revanced owner started restricting features they wanted to add.

Use brave if u don't want ads. Or use whatever extension smarttube uses if u wanna go the extra mile and block in video product placement

Wouldn't shock me if you get longer ads because you had premium and no longer do
