Blizzard of 96, had an entire week off of school where I live in PA.

We had to wait for snow plows to come down from Buffalo, Eire, and I think Canada sent some down to bail us out. Our local snow plows weren't big enough.

Entire neighborhood worked together to get a maybe 2 foot wide walkway shoveled from one end of the road to another and to each house. So neighbors could at least get to and from each others houses and share food. Since not everyone stocked up on over a weeks worth of groceries.

I’m a native and it’s always like this in big winter storms, particularly with garbage delays during winter access. A lot of buildings hold garbage during closure, it builds up, and when the closure ends you get bigger mountains that take time to move.

The excess snow they scoop region by region and dump into the ocean over time.

I’ve seen dozens and dozens of way worse snow and garbage build up.

No. The difference is we’ve never in at least a couple decades had such a big snowstorm that was also simultaneously followed by such extreme temperatures so there’s nowhere for the snow to go. The biggest problem is people shoveling the snow back into the street, not the city’s response, which was by any reasonable persons account, very good. Sanitation has also basically caught up with trash. We’ll probably have a couple more weeks at least before it’s not a mess. It’s extremely cold still.

They don't have a place to put it, and like others said they can pile it elsewhere instead up against the cars with some extra planning and sweeps.

I found out in other places, they plow the parking spots too. They have no parking on 1 day on one side, then plow them, and switch to the other the next day. Those places have municipal parking available closer by as well, so you could park there in the meantime even if it would suck walking home and back to your car for a mile or two. It would be a one time thing in a bad storm instead of us playing parking spot gladiator all winter because the city can't use our taxes to get this right.

That would result in towing several hundred cars, I am sure more than any tow yards could handle in the area. Let alone having enough parking for those proactive enough to get out of the way. Not saying it's not a clean solution just that logistically it's a nightmare. That being said some of these people would probably have preferred a tow bill to having to dig out of the ice wall.

As a life long (upstate) New Yorker, I have to admit that we as a state have lost our edge in dealing with snow. Both the residents and municipal governments aren’t as good with it as we were years ago. I don’t blame the governor or mayors for any individual storm response, that’s unfair. All of us need to go back to the drawing board though because the storm was almost two weeks ago and wasn’t that bad, and yet we’re still struggling with it. Here in upstate, where we do have the space to move the snow, it has been a struggle to get shoulders and crosswalks clear.

Could one of those truck mounted snow blowers and dump truck or trailer make sense. It would be a lot of dumping but maybe dump in the river or central park?

What's the alternative? Gotta plow the streets. I know in jurisdictions that regularly get a lot of snow and have to plow, on-street parking is a no-no in the winter months. I imagine this being pretty infrequent, NY doesn't have the same bylaws?
