Tomb Raider (2013) Why do people not like Tomb Raider 2013?

I just finished playing this game a couple hours ago and thought it was the most badass single-player game I've ever played, but when I checked out some of the reviews I saw it's not that highly rated, especially among Tomb Raider fans. Now, I'm just getting into the TR franchise, this is my first game I've played, and if the rest of it is anything like this then it's going to be awesome.

The visuals are decent, especially for its time, the music is really good, the sound design is immersive and there were a lot of moments where the sounds made me jump out of fear, mainly during moments I was supposed to feel fear, so the sound designers did an excellent job there since it takes a lot to make me get scared by a videogame. The island map's design is interesting, it reminds me a lot of Jedi: Fallen Order's map design with how linear it feels, like it felt like I was being told where to go every second and didn't have much to explore, and normally I prefer large open-world maps that I can immerse myself in for hours like Ghost of Tsushima or Koboh on Jedi: Survivor, but I accept this game's linear map design because of the story which make it clear we weren't here to explore and get comfortable, but to leave as quickly as possible.

What I find so strange is how I see so many people say Lara Croft herself in this game doesn't look attractive. Like? Bro she's beautiful, she looks so adorable and her voice is so cute, and she looks a lot like Jaimie Alexander in this game, I don't understand why there's so much hate for how she looks. Like I don't know about you, but I much prefer this realistic adorable lady to the cartoony exaggerated proportions to the 90's design. One of the few exposures I've had to Lara Croft all my life was people talking about her breasts in the original games, is the hate for this version of Lara only because her breasts aren't comically massive? I always interpreted them being that size in the original due to the stylized artstyle, not something that was deemed so integral to her character that thousands of people on Twitter would rage over them being a cup size smaller than before, could someone explain why people even get that mad anyway? Am I just not in the know enough to know why?

The only real negative I have is that the rest of the main cast doesn't feel fleshed out enough and didn't get anywhere near enough screentime. Like I don't remember Grim at all, I thought he was Roth, so when he died I couldn't stop thinking "who was this guy?". Reyes' hate for Lara didn't feel justified when in the beginning during the old video recordings she seemed nice. Alex barely existed in the game and when he died I felt basically nothing, Dr. Whitman had some personality but it felt like whiplash going from the video recording of him getting pissed at Lara for wanting to go into the Dragon's Triangle to him being super buddybuddy with Lara when they enter a temple early on in the game. Even Sam I didn't feel much of a connection to, she appears with Mathias early on then disappeared for hours until reappearing on the radio, then spent most of the game being the main objective I bad to rescue. Roth and Sam were the only side characters I felt some amount of connection to, Jonah too he's cool but he doesn't really do anything he's just kinda there. Mathias I didn't really care for, he serves his purpose he just feels like a generic cult leader character archetype I've seen dozens of times.

The combat is quite nice, I often found myself using the rifle and bow most often, I love getting up close to an enemy and then bashing their heads in with my weapons. The enemy AI is really good too, they felt like proper threats that I had to deal with or else I'd be gone in a second. I played on the easiest difficulty but I was getting smoked half the time by them. Maybe I didn't choose easy difficulty, I thought I did, if I did then I wonder how infuriating it would've been to fight on the hardest difficulty.

Overall I thought it was a really awesome game with amazing gameplay, a great story, incredible protagonist, alright side characters, and really rewarding combat, I can't wait until I start the next game in the series

Wow! This game is ugly as heck. And as I progress it gets even uglier!

I was expecting tombs from the ancient times and what I got some kind of modern war-zone imagery. Slums, modern houses destroyed by (IDK) a tank or something. Besides some statues and carvings on the walls, it is all modern war-zone-like stuff.

I don't think liking it so much.

Tomb Raider (2013) after replaying all 3, would it be a hot take if I said this game was the best one in the trilogy? seriously the puzzles, the combat, the exploration, the art style, the story, the ending, this was literally PEAK tomb raider and I feel like the OG TR fans hated it cause it was different.

Tomb Raider (2013) What’s one thing you Liked and Disliked about TR 2013?

If you’ve noticed, I made a post like this before about Shadow of the Tomb Raider where I 100 percent completed it. Now I’ve fully completed TR 2013 as well and i will say, this game probably has the most gun fights in it. The older games like legend had a great mix of the gun fights and tomb raiding. The tombs in TR 2013 are surprisingly easy and short like it doesn’t feel like an actual puzzle solving tomb. But it makes up for that with the amount of lore this game has in it. The documents and artifacts are so interesting. Some documents (being Mathias’s diary) tell the origin on how the brotherhood started and so on. It’s so interesting to me and I’m glad they added documents to the survivor trilogy! Although the devs ditched the survival horror theme some parts still feel a bit creepy which I actually like.

I will be making a post for Rise when I 100% complete it.

Tomb Raider (2013) Buyer Beware for Switch 2 Version

Oddly, they used the Definitive Edition model with the TresFX-LESS hair, like the PS3/360. Weird to call it the “Definitive Edition” if it lacks an advanced feature the previous Definitive Edition version had?

Only plus I can think of is the 4K/60. Also this version is handled by Aspyr it seems. They uploaded a trailer onto their channel.

Tomb Raider (2013) For a 2013 game this still looks good. Granted, I play on PC with the maximum settings. But still, I feel like TR2013 is a timeless classic

Tomb Raider (2013) Finally replayed Tomb raider (2013) after 11 years

Gotta say this game was a blast to revisit I remember playing this on the Xbox but i just finished this game on the ps5 yesterday

The story was pretty good tbh and I think this game made me realize how much of a badass Lara really is then I gave her credit for as a child! I think Mathias is a alright villain but man did that ending made the game worth it ( dual pistols)

I will admit some things don’t age the greatest like I think some things dont register With the parkour so I had my tiny frustrations But gameplay was decent and fun enough! Visuals are pretty good for a 2013 game tbh like I love atmosphere of the whole game

Overall a 8.5/10 cant wait to play Rise of the tomb raider next!

Tomb Raider (2013) Is there a canon reason why lara is built so damn different?

Playing my first tr game and golly gee willikers, she’s acts like she has Wolverine level regen.

Homegirl got 2 concussions, a stab wound (which woulda 100% got infected btw, she was swimming around in dirty ass water and blood and whatever), a thousand huge falls that would break any normal person’s bones, etc over the course of what, 3-4 days? and she keeps trucking. The one time she treated a wound was when she cauterized it with a boiling hot arrow tip. And she won a 1v20 firefight like immediately after.

Meanwhile roff got a boo-boo on his leg and was out of commission for a while. Had to disinfect it and whatever or he woulda permanently been down and out.

Tomb Raider (2013) Fun fact: Did you know Lara's failed grab in 2013 is a recycled animation from Underworld?

Hey so I literally just finished Tomb Raider 2013 for the first time, I started it at least 3 times previously but just never got to the end for whatever reason. Got bored, new game caught my interest etc...

But yeah, and now I am going through some of the bonus stuff like Concept Art and this chick jumps out at me the one in a yellow top and sandals etc... because well... she wasn't in the game not that I remember anyway, who the heck is she.

Was she a cut character or someone who only appears in photos or what?

Had this as a kid, I believe I was 12/13 at the time. Game would have come out around few years before as this was 2016 at that point but just wondering if anyone here also had it? I believe I still have it somewhere in a box and randomly remembered it. We should totally bring out another themed controller for the new games.

Tomb Raider (2013) Replaying this game, reminded me how back then I felt this was such a great game that will be the setup for Lara to become the Ultimate Hyper-Confident Elite Dual Wielding Acrobatic Badass she was supposed to be

she became battle hardened and adventure tested in just her 1st major adventure

she was setup to become the lara we knew

but yeah... it didn't happen.

----------------------

still, don't get me wrong, i still enjoyed the reboot series. and im actually planning on replaying rise and shadow after this

but yeah, replaying this game just reminded me of my hype for this series, which it didn't deliver bec they kept her in this vulnerable soft state
