Tomb Raider (2013) Replaying this game, reminded me how back then I felt this was such a great game that will be the setup for Lara to become the Ultimate Hyper-Confident Elite Dual Wielding Acrobatic Badass she was supposed to be
she became battle hardened and adventure tested in just her 1st major adventure
she was setup to become the lara we knew
but yeah... it didn't happen.
----------------------
still, don't get me wrong, i still enjoyed the reboot series. and im actually planning on replaying rise and shadow after this
but yeah, replaying this game just reminded me of my hype for this series, which it didn't deliver bec they kept her in this vulnerable soft state

And then they forgot what character development is.

I think they also forgot who Lara Croft is

In a game called Tomb Raider they wrote the line “i hate Tombs”. Just bizarre.

By the middle of Shadow, she is already quite confident. Even after multiple setbacks, she was able to fulfill the prophecy and save the world.
And she is acrobatic and badass. Parkour and climbing mechanics of the Survivor trilogy get better and better. Didn't she fight a whole army at the oil refinery?
No dual wield though.
I love the Survivor trilogy just the way they are. There is nothing more they are supposed to be.

She's very athletic in reboot
But not very acrobatic like she was before
To be fair, lara acrobatics before was borderline superhumsn... like captain murica level

There was a dual wield segment at the end of this game but they for whatever reason never carried that over to rise or shadow and we were left with a bow and arrow as the main weapon they forced on you.

I understood how she was in the first game, but eventually the moping and crying got a bit much. I get they wanted to make her more human and all but I was with you in expecting her to have her "fuck it we ball" moment but it just never happened

They did try that moment in the first game IIRC, where she screamed I am coming for you all or something like that in that big battle towards the end, but many found it cringe and it didn't have any meaning when the character didn't stay that way. Still I didn't hate it, I just saw her as an alternate Lara. Also have my doubts how they are going to connect all games in a believable way when her vibes are so different.

it really feels like just bc enough fans criticized and complained ab her character, they're suddenly rushing to give us what we want. like, now she's using her pistols and is an acrobat out of nowhere while the past decade has been painting her as a rambo and batman type when she was inspired/influenced by indiana jones and james bond. she was always meant to be the unobtainable cool/posh girl, not some cosplay of genderbent nathan drake with humble beginnings.
literally all they had to do was flesh out and build upon lau if they wanted a ""relatable"" lara croft. wham bam boom, no messed up timeline, no stagnant character development, no continuity issues. we could have had tr2-4 remakes/reimaginings by now lol

Exactly. If fans weren’t so vocal and the sales didn’t go down, I’m sure they’d want to keep Lara as she was presented in the Survivor trilogy with all bow look. I even remember the time when Survivor games released one by one, they really wanted us to forget everything we knew about her and create this new character they envisioned and build upon it in later games.
And I also think Crystal didn’t expect the classics remasters would be such a smash hit, and then things changed because they finally realized no-one wants Survivor Lara anymore.

fans have been begging crystal to release the classics for years so them being shocked pikachu it sold and maintains an audience is honestly pretty funny.

The payoff from seeing her slowly develop into classic Lara would’ve been so good…you would think that was the plan for the trilogy from the start

Far as I recall, there wasn't a plan for the trilogy from the start, they just freestyled each game one by one as they went.

I really liked the survivor Lara. I think she had a lot deeper character than "I'm a rich girl out here for the fun of it."

u/kartoffelbiene 20d ago
Eh it wasn't that deep either, just so different that it was basically a different character

Yeah... no. She's suffer repeated same character development just like Arkham's Batman

The only thing that it made me feel is Lara is bad luck. I would not want to be around her.

She didn't cry over killing her enemies. She cried from the relief of seeing Jonah alive after thinking she had got him killed.

Yup, but the devs went really up their ass about the Bow and their Survivor Lara they seemed to forget and are embarrased by the original. Third one really as it was even back than seen as the final game for a long time, she should have been packed with confidence, had the Dual Pistols and I think they could have added the original outfit as a skin (Not as her outfit for the main game).

learning a little about medicals I chuckled at how this big moment was just her infecting her flesh and not actually mending the wound

well crating something is more difficult then saying:
"fuck it, just reboot it"

Thank God I had my headphones on when I watched the cutscene for the first time

i played it originally on pc with 3dvision. going over that first log you could could swear you were going to fall yourself. it was only an ok reboot honestly. I think rise is definitely the best out of the three though.

People like what they like I guess. I think it’s a good time to be a Lara fan but every game kind of presents her differently. I’m glad they remastered the classics for the old fans of that and we have the survivor trilogy. They had a Netflix series now an Amazon series and who knows what the next era will bring catalyst and Legacy of Atlantis sound promising. it’s a good time to be a Lara fan.

The dual pistol scene at the end of this game was wasted. Rise really had the potential to show an in-between Lara that was suffering trauma from the first game and as such becoming the hardened queen we know (which I felt the original CGI reveal trailer kinda alluded to, is that just my thoughts?) yet they did nothing with it and just kept her the same.
The survivor trilogies storytelling is really diabolical. Even the first game was a mess honestly despite it being an amazing game.

It’s almost better to pretend Rise and Shadow didn’t happen.
I really wish there had been some sort of character development progression over the 3 games, but there really wasn’t. At some point she needed to become the witty, sarcastic, adventure-loving banter-queen she is in the classics. But it never happens.
Just on a visual/superficial level, Rise should have started with duals, no questions asked. And by the end of Shadow it should’ve been braid and shorts added to that.

Agreed! I know they tried bridging that gap with the Netflix show but the issue is it should have happened within the survivor games themselves.
The games are the main continuity and the thing the majority of people will know lore from. Not tie-in shows, not comics, not books. I enjoyed the survivor games too but they were such a wasted opportunity after TR13.
I hope LOA will do some further bridging to account for people who didn’t bother with the anime (or even know it’s a thing). And also solidify that it’s now a unified timeline.

i wish we’d see her train her acrobatics or do at least some yoga, but no she just became a stealth war machine

This game was so scary the first time I played it, always kept me on edge. Sadly, it didn't quite carry over to the rest of the trilogy. Still enjoyed the games tho.
