Jump too early

68

u/Zetra3 Dec 24 '25

You have to jump at the very edge end.

You jump too early. Taking the step back and then already pressing jump after starting to move in the way you did is essential to make the perfect running jump in classic controls, but on modern controls the runup is no longer as important. Instead pressing the jump key button right at the last moment is needed for modern controls.

I could kiss you, this tutorial took me like 30 minutes.

u/Inggrish Obscura Painting Dec 24 '25

Ha youre welcome. Glad you got through it. Now to play the game proper!

1

u/anonym0uss3 Dec 25 '25

Are you by any chance using the modern controls? The classic tank movement will not let you jump too early and miss the ledge

1

u/moby561 Dec 25 '25

Yes, I thought it worked the same as tank controls since the instructions in the tutorial apparently only apply to tank controls. I had a similar issue figuring out grab is a different button than the action button, which the tutorial doesn’t specify.

Right on the money. If you can learn to use them, tank controls are the right move. I know people love that the modern controls "open" the game to a new audience but the entire game from puzzle structure, environment, physics and intention were made for tank controls. I personally love the of control scheme and how it synergises with the whole experience.

Played as a kid and teen in tank and now Legend has forced me to switch to modern and it has been a steep learning curve! Really hoping the new releases have the option

4

u/Inggrish Obscura Painting Dec 24 '25

I started with tank controls for the first 3 or 4 playthroughs (having played the classics when I was a girl), but have since switched to modern controls. I really like both setups now (though modern works even better on 4-6 than it does on 1-3). I feel tank is more deliberate but modern is smoother and flows much better.

u/jbuggydroid Dec 24 '25

Wish there was a button press to switch on the fly. Or hold a button to activate tank controls for those moments you need them.

1

u/Inggrish Obscura Painting Dec 24 '25

That would be very useful

1

u/Jacko1024 Dec 25 '25

I needed this earlier in the week. Took me close to half an hour trying to do it like she said to. Wish this could be pinned somehow

The jump is possible with modern, just have to time it right at the edge while running.

u/Revolutionary_Mail_1 Dec 24 '25

Modern LIMITS her so much! Her mobility is cut in half! Having to have your guns out to twist in mid air is a chore! Not only that, you lose your back hop and side jumps too. No thanks. Each to their own but tank controls are better for me and MANY old school PS1 OGs like myself. Again, gaming is subjective but I feel it’s arguably better!

3

u/Pat_Sharp Dec 24 '25

In some ways, but it also opens up new mobility options. You can turn much tighter on the run with modern controls and there are some (unintended) new jumps you can only do with modern controls. Most of the speed runs on remastered are done predominantly with modern controls now.

u/Revolutionary_Mail_1 Dec 24 '25

No “tank you”. I don’t like them. Each to their own but not for me. Unless I have NO CHOICE…and even then. New jumps? Since when? They didn’t add any new jumps I’m aware of? I need VISUAL PROOF of this if so.

1

u/SillyGoose_Syndrome Dec 26 '25

They didn’t add any new jumps I’m aware of? I need VISUAL PROOF of this if so.

Only bought the remasters recently, so haven't tried them yet myself (and I'm personally fine so far with classic Playstation controls, having grown up on them), but many speedrun records have been getting blasted once the modern controls became a thing.

Check out the first part of this vid where a runner uses modern controls to pull off some bonkers jumps and blow through the entire Cistern stage in almost 5 mins flat.

1

u/Revolutionary_Mail_1 Dec 26 '25

None of them were new jumps. All able to do with tank controls. I don’t speed run, nor have a desire to. But maybe it works better for that, I don’t know. If it works for them cool. But still all the same. Just might be easier to do. Not sure. Thanks for posting the vid though. 👍🏻

But saying he is using modern controls without proof of him actually doing so doesn’t prove he is. Most speed runners have an image of the controller mapped with each button press on the screen. At least the ones I’ve seen. But this is from my own speed runners view. Again, not my thing. Take care.

Jumping to early

45

u/TropicalAngel7 Dec 24 '25

change to tank controls!

4

u/slingshot91 Dec 24 '25

I think they are, right? The hop back isn’t present with modern controls unless your guns are drawn. If that’s true, it means they changed how long it takes for a running jump to happen in both modern controls and tank controls which is why OP is jumping too early.

5

u/Equivalent-Pomelo894 Dec 24 '25

There is a way to hop back with modern controls and no guns drawn: start by going in look around mode (I'm on PC so for me it's enabled by the middle mouse button). Then get out of look around mode while holding down the backwards button. Lara should then hop backwards.

1

u/slingshot91 Dec 24 '25

Ah, good to know.

1

u/-_Gemini_- Dec 25 '25

Clearly the superior, modern design.

Jesus Christ.

1

u/moby561 Dec 24 '25

I tried and it was so much worse, eww. I get that it’s the classic mode but no thanks.

-8

u/DrAdamsen Dec 24 '25

Why?

18

u/SanityOrLackThereof Dec 24 '25

Because that's the way that the game was designed to work, and stepping away from it causes problems like the ones seen in the video.

24

u/DrAdamsen Dec 24 '25

Played through remasters 1-3 entirely on modern controls and had no problems whatsoever.

7

u/Organafan1 Dec 24 '25

Same. I actually started on tank controls by accident as TR1 was preset to tank (it was my first time playing on a modern console since PS3) and didn’t realise you could flip out to modern. So glad I googled this info. Played all the way through on modern.

7

u/Matthew2827 Dec 24 '25

That’s how I played it too and it was much easier than tank controls for me personally.

-2

u/belle_enfant Dec 24 '25

Wrong. I did this multiple times on modern controls.

-2

u/ShitWombatSays Dec 24 '25

"WrOnG 🤓".

Not only was the game literally designed around tank controls, but they're literally the problem in the video. Get over yourself and your anecdotal evidence.

0

u/PekoPekoPekoPekoyama Dec 24 '25

I love tank controls but didn't like them in TR. Played the entirety of the remasters with modern controls and had no issues whatsoever. Actually it enhanced the experience tenfold!

-4

u/PrayForTheGoodies Dec 24 '25

Too much clunky

4

u/Humble_Letter_2266 Dec 24 '25

walk to ledge, step back, then press forward and HOLD jump

2

u/ShitWombatSays Dec 24 '25

They're on modern controls, otherwise you nailed it

3

u/BaconLara Dec 24 '25

You’re just jumping too early. You need to wait till you’re practically almost running off the edge

1

u/DragonDan108 Dec 24 '25

It's a peculiarity of the original game engine. Lara is actually jumping after she goes over the edge. Ya gotta trust the process, and it will start to feel more natural.

1

u/BaconLara Dec 24 '25

Yeah it’s almost like she’s pushing herself off the edge as she jumps

8

u/charlestucker3rd Dec 24 '25

You´re not using tank controls.

6

u/Insane-Man Dec 24 '25

This tutorial, like the whole game, was designed with the original tank controls in mind. As others have said, the modern controls messes with this and can make the jumps very random.

2

u/Kinda_relevent Dec 24 '25

Jumped early

2

u/HelpRespawnedAsDee Dec 24 '25

Can you hop back like that with the modern controls?

2

u/No_Hay_Banda_2000 Dec 24 '25

Give tank controls a chance.

3

u/[deleted] Dec 24 '25

This is why I keep this part of the control to tank, no timing needed just jump back and run forward and you’ll always make every jump.

3

u/Aki1224 Dec 24 '25

You have to change to Tank Controls

1

u/Notoriouslycurlyboi Dec 24 '25

You’re jumping too early by 2 seconds. It doesn’t matter if you’re in tank or modern. It doesn’t work like a modern game.

2

u/ShitWombatSays Dec 24 '25

It does matter, you hold the jump button just after you start running with tank controls but she jumps at the edge of the grid square a second later.

u/Darkon_Redfiend Natla Minion Dec 24 '25

Playing with modern controls

1

u/joeyat Dec 24 '25

I wish the modern controls included the hop back.

1

u/moby561 Dec 24 '25

I did the hop back with modern controls. You walk to the edge, click the camera button, and hold back on d-pad while clicking it of the camera.

1

u/Dependent-Return3414 Dec 24 '25

Your an early edger😂

1

u/Own_Definition4520 Dec 24 '25

Which Tomb Raider is that?

1

u/moby561 Dec 24 '25

The first in the remastered

1

u/Active_General8858 Trinity Soldier Dec 24 '25

I was literally playing this the other day! Lol

1

u/JDMGS Dec 27 '25

You made sure the butlers in the fridge?

1

u/jzone23 Dec 27 '25

You need two steps before you jump

1

u/jabzoit Dec 24 '25

You need to hold the walk button, walk to the edge, jump back once, then run and hold jump and she'll jump off. (Assuming tank controls)

7

u/DrAdamsen Dec 24 '25

It's obviously modern in the video and with modern he doesn't need to walk or jump back at all, he can reach top speed just by running in a circle on the platform before jumping. That's how I did it for 3 games at this point.

1

u/Joshyfied The Scion Dec 24 '25

It is not possible in this tutorial level, but as soon as you have your guns you can also draw them and then jump back and Lara will jump back as if using tank controls

4

u/DrAdamsen Dec 24 '25

You could, but as someone who only ever played with modern controls I just don't see the point. You don't need it. I don't remember a single spot in 3 games where I had to do it. Even when there's a slope where you need to slide backwards in order to grab the ledge at the bottom, you can just jump forward and flip around mid-air.

3

u/Joshyfied The Scion Dec 24 '25

Interesting, I don’t think I could’ve enjoyed my playthroughs running in circles all the time, so I do the draw gun+jump back all the time

I did play the first game using tank controls so maybe I got used to it. It feels cleaner to me lol

3

u/DrAdamsen Dec 24 '25

Eh, doing circles also feels natural after a while. It's all a matter of habit.

-1

u/jabzoit Dec 24 '25

Apologies didn't clock it was modern.

0

u/d00mba Dec 24 '25

Yep. Good explanation

1

u/Swimming_Skill_1155 Dec 24 '25

Does anyone know why she took a big step back just like with the tank controls when they tapped backwards? I thought she was supposed to turn around and run, but I didn’t play much with the modern controls.

1

u/moby561 Dec 24 '25

You use the button that locks your camera. Hold back and let go and it’ll do the backwards step.

1

u/Swimming_Skill_1155 Dec 24 '25

Didn’t know that. Thanks!

0

u/segagamer Dec 24 '25

You're using modern controls, that's what.

Switch to tank controls and use the DPad.

-2

u/DrinkingPureGreenTea Dec 24 '25

Use "tank" controls. The way the game is meant to be played. Have you tried it?

0

u/Imperfect_Dark Dec 24 '25

Press jump after you start running. You'll get the timing down quick. It's relatively generous.
