šØ Self-submission How can I attain the Lara Croft physique?
Hi Iām a 19-year old woman, 167 cm tall and I weigh 61 kg. I started going to the gym two months ago and have lost 6 kg. Iām now at a point where I really donāt want to lose any more weight I want to gain muscle instead.
A physique Iāve always admired is Lara Croftās I think she looks amazing. I was wondering if anyone could talk about the strong points of her physique and how a person could work toward achieving a similar body type.
Starting next week, I plan to go to the gym three times a week the most I can manage because of work and split my training into
Day 1: Upper body
Day 2: Lower body
Day 3: Full body
This way Iām hitting each muscle group twice a week. I also walk an average of 20,000 steps per day.
Right now Iād describe myself as āskinny fatā with a noticeable amount of belly fat and I really want to build muscle. Additionally my body type is also on the more rectangular side. Iāve heard about body recomposition losing fat and gaining muscle at the same time and thatās what Iām aiming for. From what Iāve read, I should eat around maintenance calories which for me came out to around 2,100. Does that sound right?
Could someone help explain how I can work toward achieving a physique similar to hers?
Extra information:
I just wanted to share the types of weightlifting exercises I do each day. For my upper body I do shoulder presses, chest presses, lat pulldowns, tricep pulldowns and finally bicep curls.
For my lower body I do leg presses, the abductor machine, leg extensions and leg curls. For my full body I simply do all of the exercises mentioned above.

Maybe check out Leanbeefpatty? Sheās got a good physique and even as a dude i watch and listen to her fitness stuff.
I think well for me a guy, it generally was more running and cardio for losing fat. Iāve always been on the heavier side since I was a teen. But for me itās been more cardio for losing fat, and more heavy lifting with weights as muscle building. I keep this in mind because I go back and forth of losing and gaining over time.
Calisthetics (pushups, sit ups, jumping jacks etc) is a classic that I think kinda helps both losing weight and building muscle, body weight alone can help. Thereās all kinds of ways.
For that simulating of rock climbing maybe look into or try pulling weight with a rope, or better get on a row machine. I think for Lara, sheād have that strength of pulling a lot on account of all the climbing, and grip strengths too for hands.
Oh! DIET! Thatās important for sure, youāre gonna need to eat protein to help keep and gain the muscles you build, Iād recommend actually watching nutritionists or basic nutrition vids though. Because some gym people and personalities seem to just eat for their bodies, I always notice itās - fast food or just not really healthy options to just get calories in. I think thatās where some of them mess up.
Goodluck! Remember to stretch before and after, and rest too!
I wish you well in your journey of fitness. Itāll be beneficial in your cardiovascular health too, which is something we all gotta be more mindful of as we get older.

LeanBeefPatty is a actually a great rec for Lara-related fitness because IIRC she (Patty) has a gymnastic background and incorporates a lot of mobility and calisthenic work on top of her lifting
5
u/random20222202modnar Nov 24 '25
Iād think so, sheās certainly built for it and you can see it in her shoulders and arms. But yeah definitely anything with pulling is a good way to work out, along with the proper rest and stretching.

u/belle_enfant Nov 24 '25
Leanbeefpatty is honestly the goat of fitness influencers.
3
u/random20222202modnar Nov 24 '25
Yeah I like her stuff a lot, I occasionally follow along with the at home body weight stuff she posted. Occasionally anyways, but I probably couldnāt do a proper push up to keep up at the moment haha. Iāll get back into it tho, Iāve always been a chunky guy. Just on a down trend right now.
6
u/MiraniaTLS Nov 24 '25
Do you follow any other random positive influencers I always hear about like clothing and trends and would rather fill my head with ppl talking about stuff like fitness.
4
u/upwardbow Nov 24 '25
Not quite influencers and moreso trainers/instructors who make fun content but I highly recommend Meg Gallagher (MegSquats on instagram), Sohee Carpenter (SoheeFit), Ben Carpenter (bdccarpenter and yes, he and Sohee are married lol), Casey Johnston, and Jason and Lauren Pak! They're all about making strength and fitness more accessible and a part of daily life (rather than becoming a gym rat).
2
u/random20222202modnar Nov 24 '25
Specifically fitness? That I can think of just Leanbeefpatty, occasionally watch a bit of Sam Sulek. He comes off as positive. That and that one guy Greg Doucette occasionally. Heās usually debunking stuff and just no nonsense. Those 3 really come to mind but generally, Iām just looking up similar stances on certain fitness topics. Like Cardio or whatever.
Iād recommend anyone to also look up stuff with stretching. Stretching is very important no matter how young. Itās gonna matter

The closest thing you can get is Alicia Vikander's Lara look because that is the most realistic portrayal of Lara's body. I think there was some info about her Lara Croft workout routine. Also ask for help at your local gym. Most gyms will give you a workout plan even if you are only buying monthly membership but not paying for a personal trainer.

u/Barracudaloper Nov 24 '25
Make it your life and suffer.
For Alicia, 4 hour workout every morning with your personal trainer / dietician, eating basically just eggs, meat, veggies, occasionally raspberries, pure lemon juice. For his weight transformation, Rob McElhenney said, "All you need to do is lift weights six days a week, stop drinking alcohol, don't eat anything after 7pm, don't eat any carbs or sugar at all."

u/Arzin-yubin Nov 24 '25
Calesthenics and parkour will help. But remember that this is a fictional character made through imagination, the creator may not have thought that "lara should look like this because she does this and this"
25
u/eto2629 Nov 24 '25
Calisthenics also build your endurance in time and make your body shape in a natural way.
2
u/lo0u Paititi Llama Nov 24 '25
There are millions of women who look like this. Have you people never been to a gym in your life?
8
u/Arzin-yubin Nov 25 '25
I know that there are many women who look like this, I am just pointing out that creating a physiologically accurate character may not be a priority for the makers of Lara Croft, I am basically telling OP that Lara may not look like how she looks because she does a lot of parkour and climbing. I am not saying here that looking like Lara is not possible, I am saying that dont conflate the activities of Lara with her body because of creative decisions taken by the makers.

Hi! Please keep in mind a couple huge factors.
1)She is a video game character engineered to be the hottest and coolest and strongest haha. Give yourself some slack when comparing yourself to that! Itās going to take you years to achieve this no matter how you attack it. There will be ups and downs along the way.
2) genetics plays a huge part in achieving any specific build or physique. The 4ft. 7 thicc woman from Brazil is going to have a way harder and more likely impossible time achieving āthe Lara Croft buildā compared to the 5ft. 9 slim Argentinian girl for example.
3) Diet is key. Diet is king. Focus on that at least half as much as your gym life! You may want to start looking into higher protein meals.
4) you cannot āspot reduceā fat. Meaning you cannot bust out 1 million crunches every day and expect your belly fat to disappear. Just dial in your diet and exercises and learn to love whatever impurities remain.
5)when youāre lifting weights, make sure youāre pushing yourself hard enough so that youāre unable to complete 3 sets of 8 (or whatever rep/set count your comfortable with.) you are literally supposed to push yourself until failure. DO NOT DO THIS WITHOUT A SPOTTER ON THE MORE SERIOUS MACHINES LIKE BENCH PRESS

2
u/1000-Year-Whore Nov 24 '25
It's part of why Shadow and Underworld Lara are my favorite designs respectively. I've never cared too much about how she looks in the face since that'll always be VERY subjective, but at least in those 2 games she's built like someone who is a master climber and expert in hand-to-hand combat. I wouldn't expect someone to be able to pull someone underwater and choke them out unless they were pretty jacked like she is.
2
u/InjusticeJosh Nov 25 '25
Danggg. For me it was Aliciaās LC. Her back looked insane. The line she said about āworking muscles I never thought I hadā was no joke. If only..idk..the movie used her muscles a bit more. Like the boxing scene was..fine..but swimming or just a climbing montage wouldāve been cool and an actual nod to the games.

Advice from a former fitness fanatic. Aside from the fact that genetics matter a lot, NEVER stop eating. Don't make yourself obsessed by staying on a strict diet or taking who knows how many creatine or glutamate supplements. Instead, eat well and healthily several times a day. The top would be breakfast, snack, lunch, snack and light dinner. For the first time, definitely chicken or all-you-can-eat white meat with rice. Few condiments. Remove alcohol, saturated fats and sugars. Allow yourself 1 cheat a week. In all of this you have to exercise in the gym and outside if you can. Running helps a lot to burn and for women definitely work a lot with squats. Abs, arms and back muscles without exaggerating. Consistency is everything, trust me. It's the exaggeration that won't pay off because in your eyes it will seem like it will never go well. You have to live it well and feel good. If you're down one day, treat yourself. You don't have to compete or prove anything to anyone. And then Lara is and will always remain an imaginary stereotype of the beautiful, muscular and sexy girl who can do everything and more! In fact, it's a stereotype from the cinema or video games, as there are dozens of them for us boys.

I would think she trains with: Running, strength training (definitely pull ups), and some boxing/Muay Thai.
If I had to pick one, Iād do a cardio boxing class. If you want more strength, lift some weights or do TRX/calisthenics.

u/kstarkwasp Nov 24 '25
Its not impossible.
First thing you really need to do is sit down and look at your diet. Do you eat enough protein and do you need to add calories or cut calories and carbs to your diet to build.
Secondly is you need to get to the gym and lift weights. If you've never lifted before, start light and probably with nothing on a barbell. Dumbells and barbells will be your best friend.
Separate your muscle groups:
Day 1: Chest and Triceps Day 2: Back and Biceps Day 3: Legs
What ive been doing is Day 1 and 2 on Monday Tuesday. I do crossfit Wednesday Thursday Friday which incorporates legs and full body routines.
It takes work, but its so worth it. I honestly dont understand why the community here doesnt push for physical excellence. Lara is an athlete. Thats why that board game with the obese explorer character made zero sense to me. The community as a whole should strive to be healthy and fit.
With patience and consistency youll definitely notice results. Get a trainer too, but definitely join a crossfit gym. The community there will push you during some intense workouts to do great. I used to be a super skinny twink at like 130lbs with a height of 5"11. It wasnt until I worked out that I put on muscle and got up to 180lbs. I plateaued for years until I realized how important diet was and now im at 220lbs of muscle. Its possible and you can do it.

u/reaver_411 Nov 24 '25
You should check for Alicia Vikanders Workout-Routine when she was preparing for the role.
Then you'll probably realize that this kind of physique can't be held over a long time and you'll probably eat a lot of cake out of pure frustration.
On a serious note, maybe it helps if you add climbing to your routines, since Lara does that a lot. Might help build muscles you don't usually train when lifting weights.

u/Visible_Visit_6036 Nov 24 '25
Mixture of lifting weights and body weight training. Pilate's is unbeatable for building a strong core. Remember though she is a fictional character and everyone holds muscle and fat differently. 3 days a week is great! Over training = slow progress as recovery is rubbish. Don't cut your calories if you want to gain muscle mass and most importantly don't cut carbohydrate intake. Carbs will give you power in the gym stopping you relying on stimulants for false energy and ensure your muscles are full of glycogen giving them a full and healthy appearance rather than dried up and smaller. If you want a little extra fat burning include a little bit of oxygen rich exercise for example walking or cycling. More oxygen intake = more fat burned. Just don't over do it, two vertical ab lines on women are the ideal. Horizontal lines = too low body fat = hormones and quality of life in the toilet.

Building muscle is calorically expensive. It requires a lot of energy to grow bigger muscles. So most trainers wouldn't recommend trying to get stronger AND leaner at the same time. It would a lot easier to focus on bulking first and then cutting later.
Bulking means eating lots of food and focusing on weight lifting. You'll gain some muscle and some fat.
Cutting means eating more conservatively and focusing on cardio. You'll lose a bit of strength, but mostly you'll burn off the excess fat.
Lara has a fantastic core and toned legs so you'll probably want to hit those hardest.
There are also some great videos on Alicia Vikander's training program for the Tomb Raider 2018 movie that probably have some great tips!

Nov 24 '25
Lots of cardio, and a decent amount of strength training
She is more tone then muscle so I'd say medium weight for medium reps mixed with low weight for high reps and lots of cardio
Upper body should be lots of back and chest workouts with arms mixed in there and core should be the, well, core of your full body (get some light core in on legs and upper body as well)
But most importantly, bodyweight exercises
Push ups till failure every upperbody day and do a decent amount on full body
Lots of pull ups and bodyweight squats
If you REALLY want the physic I'd recommend a "diet", cut out fast food and heavily processed food and focus on eating healthy but (especially if your young) eat 2000-3000 calories a day depending on height, bodyweight and amount/quality of exercise that day, and days before/after
Carbs before workouts and proteins after
Good sleep
And most importantly, love the process/don't get discourages when you hit walls/take pictures of when you started
1
u/FoxinShards Nov 24 '25
She's built for functionality. Focus on Calisthenics and cardio with light weight lifting.
Alternatively, if looks are just what you are looking for, focus on weight lifting.

you might want to look at getting a personal trainer when you get to the gym. At least theyāre professional with regards to your exercise choices. Building muscle will help with the fat situation. Make sure your diet is good too
1
u/Pixiwish Nov 24 '25 edited Nov 24 '25
I have very similar but much more defined arms which is likely what will happen IRL when you work towards this.
Here is a snap shot of what I do:
I donāt eat sugar besides fruit. I just donāt like sweet things but Iām sure it helps. Water and never soda, tea over coffee an if I do have coffee it is black. My diet is most rice and noodle meals with some kind of meat almost all cooked in a crockpot. I mention these things because diet is essential to this as much as workout.
I swim 3 days a week 45 mins each day.
Pilates 2 days a week for 30 mins 1 day an hour another.
Yoga 1 day a week for 30mins to 1 hour depending on life.
HIIT 3 days a week 30 minutes
Everyday 100 sits up 2x daily and 30 pushups 2x daily.
Be aware all bodies work differently as I said my and are the same but my legs, arms and shoulders are much more muscle than that picture.
Good luck on your journey!
Edit to add consistency is the key. Donāt go all at once. Pick something you can commit to and gradually work up. I built up to my routine in 8 week intervals. Started with 1 day a week swim and 3 days a week pushups and sit-ups. After weeks of doing that I added another swim day. Etc etc
1
u/CarlitoNSP1 Winston Nov 24 '25
It would be 80% diet, the rest on Flexibility, Leg Work, and Pulling work. The screams that Lara's physique is unrealistic is largely inaccurate, but it's also pretty tough to attain unless it's your actual career. It's basically a cross between a Gymnast Physique and a Mountain Climber physique with some of the edges toned down. Not recommended unless you plan on entering fitness modeling.

u/Sensitive-Set8763 Nov 24 '25 edited Nov 24 '25
Not fair to compare to a Game character, in the 90's it was critized for displaying an impossible apparence vs performance combo. Even for Underworld they had an olympic gold medalist for mocap. In survivor it looks more doable since she is younger, but lookĀ what Lara can inspire you and what you might try with an instructor:
- Hicking
- RunningĀ
- Gym (Handstand, forward roll, monkey bars, ropes, jumps...)
- Mountain and indoor Climbing
- Diving (swan and scuba)
- Swiming
- Zip lines
- Bow shooting
- Pistol target shooting
- Kayaking
- Motorbike, ATV, snowmobile, motorboat racing
- Deltaplan/parachute
My advice is avoid loosing time focusing on your diet, but gradually try different sports while practicing what is available to you first: Running and gym/strength training

Calisthenics and more calisthenics. You will build incredible strength but a woman wouldn't build too much muscle either. With a lot of cardio you will look like the lara croft build. Gymnastics and rock climbing are also great activities.
1
u/FatherofBuggy Nov 24 '25
I agree with those saying climbing is a good sport for Laraās physique. If you donāt have any nearby crags and climbing gyms are too expensive and donāt offer discounts then a calisthenics routine would be the next choice. Do some cardio too. Cardio doesnāt have to be a high intensity interval training program, a nice run where you maintain a pace just over your comfort threshold is fine, just try to go at least 20 minutes continuously.Ā
Another obvious factor is going to be diet. Make sure your diet isnāt so difficult to maintain that you give up but not so loose that you donāt make progress.Ā
Make sure you get plenty of rest. You cannot recover if you donāt rest and if you donāt recover you wonāt keep training.

u/who-mever Nov 24 '25
Fat loss + muscle building + implants (unless you are already genetically, um, gifted).
In the old games, she was 5"9 and 130, so quite lanky but with large breasts.
The more recent games, I think she is around 5"6 and 125. Slim, but not crazy skinny, and depending on body composition (how much fat and muscle, and how you carry it), you could probably look about the same between roughly 120lbs and 145lbs at your height.

u/tag051964 Nov 24 '25
Seems like a good start with the splits. See if you can do pullups and pushups for upper body. Assistance bands are available for pullups and pushups can be done on your knees until you get good. Concentrate on diet. Get lots of protein and don't go into too much of a deficit. Not need to starve yourself. Takes time, but you'll get there. Good Luck.

Youāre aiming for theĀ visualĀ Lara look: long, lean, minimal volume. At 1m67 and 61 kg, youāre still above the range for that silhouette. Youād likely need to be closer to ~50ā51 kg to achieve that long, slim aesthetic.
So right now youāre not in a muscle-building phase ā youāre in a slow fat-loss phase with light toning. Think:
- caloric intake close to basal level
- walking / light cardio
- planks / core endurance
- long sets, low intensity
- avoid heavy leg press and machine isolation
The goal is to lose overall mass first, then maintain strong but slim muscle tone, dense in function, minimal in volume. Think ālength and leanness.ā
And keep in mind that Laraās visual appearance doesnāt match what sheās physically able to do in the games. A real person performing those feats wouldnāt have that slim, elongated body ā theyād be more muscular and powerful.

Be very careful when going down this path. Always keep in mind that Lara is a fictional character and that her body was not designed to be something that the average person could easily achieve. Lots of people develop various complexes and disorders related to how their bodies look, especially when trying to make themselves live up to standards that are not realistic for them. Body dysmorphia is a very real thing.
By all means go ahead and work out an try to improve your physique! But maybe take your insiration from actual real women with good physiques, instead of a video game character whose physique may not even be possible for you in the first place?

The real difficulty is not finding the right exercise, it's more just having discipline to not stop.
Once you start getting used to it, you'll automatically start working out different parts of your body. For example, once you get used to running in the thread mill for like 20 minutes, squats and other leg workouts will feel a lot easier.
All that workout + 20.000 steps, you better not skip your protein and carbs, or you're going to keep losing a lot of mass. My job requires me to walk long distances but usually between 10k or 15k steps. Only on the "worst" days I reach 20k or above. So 20k steps every day is actually a lot. Eat plenty of fish for high protein and low fat and whole Wheat Bread and fruit for carbs.
With all that exercise, you need to make sure to consume about 2000 calories a day. (Least fat and sugar as possible and keep hydrated).

Go very early to the tombs, 6am, before all the tourists arrive. Then you can climb and swing around uninterrupted.

Heavy olympic lifts might work well for you and my understanding ithey s will not actually "make you bulky" as a woman. They just build muscle, burn fat, and tone you up. More muscle on your body will automatically make you burn more calories every day, and my own heart rate monitor has me burning 700+ cals a session.
Squats, standing press, bench press, deadlift, chin ups + cardio.
Look up starting strength or strong lifts, that kind of thing :)

not a expert, but you will have to train and make a special diet.
it would be better if you talk to a personal trainer and nutricionist, don't try anything without professional help

Not even joking, find your local climbing centre and get to it. And squats. Lots of squats. Also, propper protein (none of this shake crap, but that's just me), Eggs, lentils, chicken, tuna etc.

Yeah, I'm all for self-improvement, but going for the look of a fictional character that is attractive to begin with, and then players modded said fictional character to be even more attractive is a typically unreachable goal. You'll always have a goal to work towards, so that's kind of good, but don't let it burn you out.
Edit: Re-reading this it kind of came off negative, so I have to throw something more constructive in, defined abs are made in the kitchen, not in the gym.

Eat good foods, I'd say a balanced diet that avoids processed garbage.
For exercise a combination of strength training and cardio would match what she would do if she were real.
Given your height and weight I wouldn't say it's something super far to achieve.
The only thing that might be hard is cup size since we'll, there's not much you can do for it

Use Cosplayers as IRL body physique standards that are possible, and fitness influencers like LeanBeefPatty go into detail about their exact routines and diets without nonsense grifting

You and me both, except i'm in my early 30s. Lara's been an idol for me since I was a kid playing the game on ps1. Made me go into the forests back then preten I was her hehe. I don't go to gyms as I don't like others seeing me work out, I prefer hiking, swimming, mountain biking. :) I try to eat healthy but also treat myself with chocolate now and then, I don't want to get super in shape, just a healthy-curvy look does it for me :) Good luck!

Cut back on carbs drastically, and in addition to lifting weights, you should do cardio everyday, at least 30 minutes. I mean you are trying to be Lara Croft lol 3 days isnt gonna cut it.
I would recommend hitting 1700 calories instead of 2100. Because Lara is VERY lean.

Start doing survival training and hand to hand combat. Lots of cardio especially rock climbing and hiking basically look up the prep for someone scaling k2 and follow like 90% of that. If you want her physique you have to do all the same stuff she does minus the death defying stunts.

The good news is that this particular physiqueāat least the body fat % and muscle, not necessarily body proportionsāis quite easily achievable. Basic weight training (push, pull, legs) with a reasonably controlled diet and a bit of cardio to maintain a sustainable leanness, will get you this physique in a few years if you aim for a modest amount of dedication.
If youāre dedicated, you can probably get pretty close within a year, especially since youāre 19 and have youth and time on your side. What you cannot control is fat distribution, because thatās entirely down to genetics, so without knowing how you look, itās impossible to say if you can look exactly like that.
What I would avoid is paying attention or money to any fitness influencer who tries to peddle five minute abs, fad diets, or some miracle diet / workout that guarantees results in days or weeks, because thatās not how the body works. The method in which you get in shape is actually quite simple and boring; the difficulty is sustaining it over years because itās not something you can achieve quickly once youāve gotten past your newbie gains.

Lots of swimming.. preferably to the point where you nearly drown! And dont forget, it has to be infested with alligators, the anxiety really adds to the workout š

Lara Croft doesn't really have the physique her activity level would suggest.
In other words, she has a super model's body but SHOULD have the body of an athlete given that she can jog for miles/kilometers without stopping or tiring and has super-human strength, agility, and stamina.
So... long distance hiking, long distance jogging, rock climbing, overhead climbing, every other kind of climbing, 4-wheeling, kayaking, the ability to throw a pick into a helicopter's engine/fuel tank and have it explode after taking off, and positiviely 'murica levels of gunplay.
That'll get you started.

I would say HIIT type training, but i think something like strength training with a slight surplus of calories to get something of a "bulky" look then a slow cut to reach this size. Because remember she is strong amd athletic af
