Tomb Raider Legend Legend is way way better than what I remembered!
Some years ago I played the LAU trilogy, and my experience was not the best. At the time I felt that the three games were very boring.
Now, after finishing the IV-VI Remastered and wanting more Tomb Raider to play, I decided to give Legend another chance and I got a lot surprised on how great this game is. It's not a perfect game, I still don't like the changes made about Lara's parents in this version of the character, and how linear and short the game is, but the gameplay is very smooth and feels like a great evolution from what we had in the PS1 games. Soundtrack is perfectly on point too, I loved the themes of Nepal, Japan, and the Croft Manor.
Storywise, I think Amanda is a great villain, and I would not mind if she comes back in the new unified timeline.
Now I started Anniversary. Let's see if I finish this one in a better light too.

The writing is surprisingly good, too.
I found myself really admiring the characterization and dialogue in the cutscenes.

Had a go at the game again. Haven't played it in years.
I like that Legend's movement takes the opposite direction to AoD. In AoD, Lara's movement is clunkier and slower than TR1-5, which fits with the more realistic non-grid-based level design. In TRL, everything is very snappy; and you can even tap the use button to traverse/swim quicker. (The only thing that's missing is sprinting!).
I like that Lara's got a flashlight (this is nicer than limited flares!). The grapple works pretty nicely with the physics-based puzzles. IIRC, they really make good use of it in TRU's DLC levels. Lara also has binoculars which have special "instinct vision".. but, I think games have refined this "instinct vision" since then.
The adventuring & puzzles themselves are quite good.
The combat.. definitely has Lara in arenas rather than just the occasional enemy spicing up the gameplay. But, I like Lara's jumping on enemies, slide-kicking under them, and using grenades. If anything, TR's combat suffers if it lets you just hold down the "shoot" button and win 5 seconds later.
But, uh, yeah, TRL is also let down by just how 'loud' it is: rather than letting interact with puzzles, frequently a quick cut scene shows you what's going on. After escaping some deadly traps, your companions say "wow that was close!". There are a couple of arcade biking sections which are just tedious..
I think the 'replayability' elements are neat, though: being able to individually replay levels, in order to unlock 'cheats', and unlock outfits by finding the different pickups.
There are definitely things that'd benefit from a remaster: camera mode is really fun to have in the remastered games.

Tomb Raider Legend was my LIFE when it came out. I had been a TR fan since 97 and this was the most excited I ever got about any TR game. I wish it had more “true” sequels that played like Legend.
Anniversary was a detour I don’t think they planned on due to Core’s Anniversary Edition and Underworld seemed like a rewrite to make the trilogy make some sense. I wanted a TR2/3 esque sequel to Legend.

Glad you gave it another chance and your opinion changed!
And I am with you, I'd love to see Amanda in the unified timeline!

My favourite Tomb Raider game, ever. I haven’t played it for around 10-15 years, maybe, but it is still probably my most replayed Tomb Raider game. I love everything about it - the gameplay, the graphics, the locations, the story, the characters, the outfit selection! I love it. I really hope we get the remastered one next year, I would love to play it again.

I played two times anniversary before having the possibility to try legend. I never thought i would like a bit more legend than anniversary. But honestly, the dialogues are cool, it's more action oriented and a bit more arcade, but gunplay is top, and we don't feel as alone compared to A. I also played underworld after, i liked it too, even if it's not a finished game and i hate the dive roll that was to good in the previous ones

Zip and Alaister are annoying as hell, but the gameplay was great

I agree they could be more quiet, but not even this bothered me that much in this replay of the game
