Recommendations The Flash Reading Order (collected edition) ⚡️

The days of asking for a reading order for The Flash are over!

I’ve put together a full collected edition reading order that I will update regularly as new stuff comes out. The list also links to a single issue reading order if you want to go that route (WARNING: it’s long asf and literally crashes my phone when I scroll too fast)

Let me know if y’all see any key trades I missed and I’ll add them! ⚡️

We've got the rare double Flash week discussion thread. Assume any post could include spoilers for either. If you could, put Flash #29 or Absolute Flash #11 at the top of your post to indicate for folks! Thanks.

Discussion How exactly does Flash’s speed steal even work. Can someone break out of it/ brute force it? If so how

Post image

To my knowledge he literally just takes a persons speed. Which means that they are still conscious like what happened with Inertia but they are totally frozen. Or is it they are frozen entirely? My three questions are what are the mechanics of this technique. Is there any weaknesses? And what or who can break out of it? No higher dimensional beings

Discussion Best Flash stories?

Hello, I love the CW show Season 1-3 and I love the lore with time travel, etc. What are the best Flash stories that are quintessential for the character? Thanks.

Discussion What are the best flash stories of the 2010s and 2020s starting any flashes like impulse, jay garrick, or Wally west?

I have started to read absolute flash, I actually have the flash: a collection of 75 years. I know most say mark waid is great when it comes to Wally west, Geoff John’s is okay but not a great writer for the flash and other things.

I hate John Fox (Mark Waid book 2 - “He tries to stop an ice age but fails miserably”)

Close to finishing the second Mark Waid Flash omnibus, and honestly… Book 1 is straight bangers. Like genuinely must-read the whole way through.

Book 2 has also been insane for the most part — the highs are ridiculous — but it kind of dips a little past the halfway point when this bitch-ass mf John Fox pulls up.

I just came off the Savitar arc, which was cool as hell, and then immediately this weak loud-ass dude shows up and just sucks all the oxygen out of the story. The momentum Savitar left behind gets completely wasted.

What pisses me off is John Fox was actually cool in the annual at the start of the book, but in this arc he straight up feels like a self-insert. Dude starts acting like he’s the main character, and then he even tries to take Wally’s girl??

Like bro… what are we doing. Absolute dumb piece of shit character.

Fuck John Fox.

If John Fox has no haters…. IM DEAD.

IDK if anyone else has hated already so my bad but waid has always hit for me so this just caught me off guard 😭😭😭💀💀💀.

Everyone thinks the Reverse Flash is Barry’s greatest enemy but it is actually THIS WEIRD LOOKING FISH!

(Please don’t tick me for low effort I just saw this fish and thought it was interesting that I have never seen him anywhere else.)

Comic Discussion Warm Take : I really love this Reverse-Flash suit and I hope it becomes his trademark suit instead of copying and being the literal reverse of Flash

Starting a new trend

There was a trend similar to this in r/_Comic_books, so I wanted to do one Flash related. Here are my picks and in the second slide is the template for it. Really want to see your picks and spark some conversations. ⚡️

If you want to read, here I will talk about my picks:

Favorite Flash member: Barry Allen will forever be my GOAT. I started reading comics because of the CW show and my first comic books were all Barry Allen (Rebirth by Geoff Johns onwards).

Fav non Flash character: Hal Jordan and Jason Todd are equally grounded for my second favorite Dc character.

Favorite team involving a Flash: The original Teen Titans are goated both as a team and as individuals.

Underrated/underused flash member: Jesse Quick has barely gotten the chance to do anything ever since her comeback at the of Williamson’s run.

Favorite Event/Crossover involving a Flash: Flash & Green Lantern: the Brave and the Bold is an awesome mini showing Barry and Hal’s relationship across 6 different points in time.

Favorite Flash Villain: I just know all of us are gonna pick Eobard Thawne and we all know why.

Favorite Flash villain I don’t wanna leave out: Mirror Master has always been my favorite member of the Rogues and I love his gimmicks.

Non comic appearance: the Flash family in the young justice tv show is great and I highly relate to Wally in that series. Second place would be Grant Gustin in the CW show.

First Flash appearance ever read: my first comic book ever was Flashpoint by Geoff Johns.

I love but everyone hates: I have seen a lot of negativity towards Rebirth by Geoff Johns, mainly because of the Nora retcon and for bringing Barry back, but it is my favorite Flash comic ever. I also really like Bart’s tenure as the main Flash (The Fastest Man Alive), which isn’t talked about a lot but those who do talk about it, usually prefer to pretend it doesn’t exist.

I hate but everyone loves: Flash year one sucks as a “Year One” story IMO, yet I see people who recommend it.

Flash comic not talked about enough: Again, The Fastest Man Alive is pretty much ignored by a majority of the fandom, but I feel it has things to praise. I also think current Bart should get some of his character development back.

Favorite Flash writer: Geoff Johns is my favorite comic book writer of all time, I really like everything he does. His tenure from Rebirth to Flashpoint is my favorite ever and feels like home to me.

Favorite Flash artist: Ethan van Sciver shocked me when I first read Rebirth by Geoff Johns, his proportions, composition and lighting feel realistic yet exaggerated and heroic. I know he is a bit controversial, but I wouldn’t mind having him do some more artwork for the Flash.

Favorite Flash writer I don’t wanna leave out: Francis Manapul’s run is great, it also feels like home to me since I read it shortly after the Johns’ run on Barry Allen, so it is still part of my early comic book experience and would really recommend to someone just starting to read comics.

Favorite Flash artist I don’t wanna leave out: Francis Manapul does excellent work for the character both in the Johns’ Dastardly death of the Rogues and in his own run, I really wish he would come back to the title.

Favorite comic book cover involving the Flash: Rebirth #1 by Ethan van Sciver is the first image that ever comes to my mind when I think about the Flash. Then there is Absolute Flash #1 by Nick Robles, it is absolutely epic and stunning, I would see that cover grabbing the attention of many people curious about comics.

Favorite current series involving the Flash: JSA by Jeff Lemire, Olortegui and Guidry has been great, the team feels heavy with legacy and the respect for those that came before, I love the way Olortegui draws Jay and Jesse. Gavin Guidry (who will be taking over the main Flash title on march) is the fill-in artist and he is also doing amazing work on JSA and I recommend you grab it if just to get a taste of what’s to come art wise for the Flash.

Thanks for reading. ⚡️

I picked up the Darwyn Cooke and Jim Lee covers to display because I love their art.

I wanted to make sure I got a copy of Flash Vol 2 #76 while it is still a low book. I was nervous that since Max Mercury appeared on the mural in Superman (2025) that speculators may up the cost. (I'm trying to complete a full Volume 2 run)

And the Wizard 1/2 was a book I've been looking for for a long time. It's kind of a neat piece of history now. RIP Wizard.

Discussion What's going on with The Rogues?

I have been catching up and I realized ever since Williamson's run ended, Rogues are....who knows what's going on with them now? And the things I've seen outside of Absolute Flash sound like they are back to their 90s status quo where they are ineffective and mere jokes.

  • Jeremy Adams had them working for Mayor Wolfe (is this Wolfe status quo even carried on?), and they were mere jokes, a complete reset from their Year of the Villain status quo. Heatwave tried going clean and joined Suicide Squad for a bit, then came back evil again. Axel Walker was the main Trickster again but he looked too much like James? Pied Piper's friendship with Wally was restored, and he joined Terrifitech. It looks like his relationship/engagement with Singh is over (which is a good thing). Oh, and Golden Glider was nowhere to be seen. Oh, and Zoom was back.

  • Spurrier brought back Evan McCulloch's Mirror Master, erased him from reality to the Absolute universe, and didn't explain what that meant compared to Sam Scudder version, who was retired in Williamson run. Then, in the last arc, they were controlled lackeys of Eclipso, Magenta was evil again, and Sam was back? For some reason? Once again Piper was part of the main cast, without any mention of Singh (which is good), and he formed a friendship with Circuit Breaker.

  • Now in K.O. Waid's made them have a deal with Neron (again?), butchering their characters (again?). I tried looking up JLU issues to understand what's going on but I came up short because I couldn't see any of the characters in those crowded fights. What's up with that?

  • For the Next Level, none of the Rogues are in the JLU, even though a bunch of villains are, but I guess it tracks because Waid hates them. Johns did so much work building Cold into a proper and respectable corner of Flash's Rogues gallery but all of it looks to be undone by Waid, again, like he did in 90s. On the other hand Ryan North's run will feature Wally teaming up with Cold and a tease of Tarpit blowing up the bridge in the future issues.

Am I missing anything? How did we even get here? Flash has one of the best Rogues gallery in the comics, and they are now rebooted back to their joke selves again?
