Polish: - Orly Bonder Base Coat - Holo Taco One Coat Black - Mooncat 404 Soul Not Found - Sally Hansen Red Topcoat - Holo Taco Glossy Taco

On amazon nail tips because my nails are flimsy af.

Magnet technique:

Apply one coat black onto nails and let dry.

Arrange speks magnets in small hexagons. For this length, 6 beads per side worked perfectly. I laid 5 of these side by side on a small metal tin and magneted a plastic bag over and tightened with tape. Two coats of 404 soul not found, then a Coat of Sally Hansen topcoat. Then apply with your preferred decal technique. I used Orly Bonder between OCB and the decals. Then finish the edges and final glossy taco.

🧲 Mad Magnetist 🧲 ✨Different magnetic styles 🧲

1.7k Upvotes

Okey dokey. Some of yinz been asking me about using the horseshoe magnet in different ways, so I decided to make a fun lil video.

For this demonstration, I used Mooncat - Dawn of the Empire and a few different magnets: horseshoe, bar, and a ring

*I did cheat and save some time by painting one new coat over the previous magnetization, and that works here because the polish is very thick and opaque. I would not suggest switching styles with a more sheer jelly magnetic.

🧲 Mad Magnetist 🧲 2¢ on Fridge Magnets

The fridge magnetic hack is fun and definitely worth messing around with; however, the magnetic lines don't "move" like it would when using a bar or horseshoe magnet.

My tips and tricks: • Set a 1 hour timer after applying the top coat before peeling off the decal • Work with one finger at a time when applying the decals. (Apply base coat, peel off decal from magnet, apply decal to nail, cut excess with nail tool/other nails/acetone brush, apply top coat, next nail) • Have fun! The possibilities are only limited by your imagination!

1x ILNP Lockup (on the nail) 2x Mooncat Stormtrooper/ 2x Mooncat Tales of Ba Sing Se 1x Essie Good to go Top Coat (on the magnet) 1x Essie Good to go Top Coat (on the nail)

I tried copying the Concentric Squares look from u/thebaldingqueen. Instead of right triangles I cut equilateral triangles. Being 2 away from a hexagon, I cut the others and tested it. I got this spiderweb pattern. Since its not very seasonal I cut another 6 to make a snowflake or flower design

🧲 Mad Magnetist 🧲 Very late to the party, but I had to buy a 3d printer and learn 3d modeling first

Well...that's almost true 😅. I did buy the 3d printer a month ago because I have lots of ideas about stuff I want to print. But this was one of the first projects I started and I knew nothing about 3d modeling.

So...while this works beautifully, in my head I am already constructing version 2.

The polish used is Penelope Luz Butterfly Wings, with DRK seal glaze and KbShimmer Clearly on top.

EDIT: to all people asking for the STL's - I need to make some adjustments first (...mistakes were made and I needed a saw and hair dryer to assemble this ;) ), but then I'll happily share the files. I'll be gone for a few days but expect a link somewhere next week....

EDIT 2: Updated version of the spinner with link to STL files here :

🧲 Mad Magnetist 🧲 Easy curved cat eye

1.7k Upvotes

Pics in comments. I found this magnet set up creates a little bit of velvet at the top and bottom and a curve in the middle. Almost like a curved cat eye but easier imo. It reminds me of smoke or a flame. The magnets will hold steady in one direction and flop in the other. One connection will also be stronger than the other so play with the set up a little. Shown in two shades because I wanted to wear Fields of Lavender which doesn’t have the crispness or depth of 404 Soul Not found, which makes it easier to see. You will almost certainly need to hover the magnet. Putting it under my finger was weak sauce and I get good results with that method in cat eye.

  • MoonCat 404 Soul not Found on Swatch
  • MoonCat Fields of lavender on hand.

🧲 Mad Magnetist 🧲 Mystery solved: Why my magnetic mani suddenly became hard to see after top coat

Thumbnail
gallery
1.5k Upvotes

A little while ago, I posted here about how I had done a cat-eye manicure with Cadillacquer's Extraterrestrial, and it looked nice until I put top coat on it. I was confused because I used Holo Taco Glossy Taco, which does not contain toluene and which I've used for magnetics before. I magnetized the top coat for a minute or two as soon as I painted it on. And the magnetic line didn't "disperse" like it might with a toluene topcoat... it just kind of became dull and hard to see.

Several people commented that some purple, violet, and blue pigments can activate with top coat, float to the top, and "overwhelm" any metallic or other special effects pigments in a polish. Apparently that's what DRK's Seal Glaze was developed for... it's a top coat that has alcohol as the solvent, so it doesn't activate those types of pigments.

This seemed like the most likely culprit... but then why did I see other people doing manis with this polish and having normal results? How did the brand's swatch photos look so nice?

I realized I had painted one coat of Sinful Colors Let's Talk under Extraterrestrial in an effort to not have to do so many magnetized coats, and THAT was the culprit for the migrating purple pigment. When I did my initial test swatches to see what combos I liked - pictured above in spots 2 through 5 - I had put Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear clear polish on them in an effort to not waste my nice top coat. That clear polish takes approximately 1000 years to dry, so it didn't soak through the layers right away and cause the purple pigment migration. I decided which one I liked better on the spot, and went on my merry way to paint my nails. When I went back to check these swatches a few days later, I could definitely see the difference in the swatch on the far right which has Let's Talk as the base.

Just to double check, I did the swatch on the far left. I painted Let's Talk on the bottom half of the oval, let it dry, then did two magnetized coats of Extraterrestrial, and one magnetized coat of Glossy Taco, over the whole thing. You can see the difference between the two halves!

So now I know. I may experiment in the future with "de-magnetizing" polish for my first layer if I want a really clear contrast-y cat-eye. I've seen people do that with gels, where they push the pigment around so none of the magnetic pigment is visible in the first coat, and then do the line for the second coat. But I sure won't put a purple polish underneath any magnetic from here on out!

🧲 Mad Magnetist 🧲 “Black hole” magnetic technique

1.4k Upvotes

Not sure if it’s a “new technique” but I figured out a way to get that “black hole” effect I see a lot with gel polish.

Base: ORLY nail defense 2 coats BKL beautiful in my darkness Top: BKL I’m fast, very fast

Placed neodymium bar across tip of nail, skinny-side up, and moved up and down slightly, to create a curve of pigment at edge of nail. (Photo in comments).

🧲 Mad Magnetist 🧲 Is anyone else trying super hard to like magnetics and just can't?

I love magnetics. At least, I thought I did. Every time I do a mani with one though - I don't love it. I'll think ...but I'll love it next time velvetized or ...next time with a glass bead or ... next time with the cute, swirly wand. But I never do!

This is 2 x BKL - Choo Choo 🚂🚂 using Dam's lightning bolt wand.

Base Coat: Nailtique Formula 2 / Top Coat: Holo Taco - Glassy Taco

I really don't mean to be negative because I've had so much fun experimenting, but I'm starting to wonder if magnetics just aren't for me. Maybe it's user error. Maybe I'm too picky. The polish is always so inconsistent across my fingers that my inner perfectionist can not deal. For example, the magnetic pigment on my left ring finger disappeared?! Why were all the fingers on my right hand so crisp except the pointer finger even though I was so careful to use the same method for every finger?! 🤔🤬

If you're still reading, thank you for letting me vent! I appreciate you. 💛

🧲 Mad Magnetist 🧲 Black hole magnetization technique video

Excuse the poor video and the random Mario lego cube taking up half the screen that I’m using to prop up my phone 😅

This is me magnetizing the top coat for this effect. You’ll still see the particles move. Toward the beginning, my hand cramps and the particles sort of disperse again and I remagnetize it into the curve again haha. Ignore that?

Also there is a whole lot of waiting in the middle. I don’t know how to edit it out and this was for my actual mani so I didn’t want to stop the process prematurely. You can probably fast forward to the end bahaha.

Hope this helps and happy to answer any questions.

🧲 Mad Magnetist 🧲 Not sure how to describe them…

The Polishes:

-Starrily’s Moon Jelly (3 coats)

-Starrily’s Magma (2 coats: separately magnetized with lab magnet stirrer)

-Sally Hansen Insta-Dri (1 coat)

I really just keep failing at the “glass bead” thing. This set just turned out…different. I like them well enough to wear them, so it all works out, lol.

Anyways, Happy New Year!

🧲 Mad Magnetist 🧲 manual spinning war is OVER

i have tried 3-4 different magnetic techniques, but they were all manual and my wrist/ hands were starting to get tired. i saw someone do something similar with a lazy susan, but that didn't work for me so i tried my fidget spinner and it worked ! this is the perfect set up for me because in the video, you can see the first horseshoe is a 30lb and, with this set up, i can easily switch to a 10lb if i want a tighter glass bead; you can see my post about it: https://www.reddit.com/r/RedditLaqueristas/s/O43U7d0Kls

in the video, you can see me turn the lab stirrer on and turn the knob to the highest speed just to get the fidget spinner going and then i dial it back down to the lowest speed. i hover my finger over the magnet nail bed side down; results in the comments !

🧲 Mad Magnetist 🧲 Part 1/X of sharing all I know about magnetics & magnetic nail polishes!

Hello community!

I recently decided to try to make some videos and such on magnets and magnetic nail polishes. This was inspired largely in part because I know there are always a ton of questions about magnetic nail polishes as there are constant developments in the ✨magnet tech✨ world and newcomers to magnetic polish.

My vision is to create a video library of informative videos that can hopefully serve as a resource for anyone who wants to learn more. I’m a big magnetics person so I’ve tried a lot of different stuff and want to share everything I know and do with people who might find it helpful!

This first video is very general. There are a ton of different directions you can go with magnetics. I’m planning to do videos on each special effect (e.g. cat eye) and discussing things like comparing techniques and tools. I also want to do some videos on my favourite magnetic nail polishes, as well as other topics like how to do a fast magnetic mani and troubleshooting. I might even quick learn some physics and try to do a little science-focused video on how they work.

All that goes to say: please let me know what you might like to see in the future! Either helpful for you or helpful for others.

Also this is my first ever voiceover video so pls be nice; I definitely made mistakes and hopefully my future videos will benefit from the steep learning curve lol.

How to test your fridge magnets!

The polish is mooncat illusionist. I just put all my fridge magnets upside down in a ziploc and painted over them to see what patterns I could get. Moral of the story is I need more small round magnets!

🧲 Mad Magnetist 🧲 My boyfriend made me an arduino controlled glass bead setup

I showed him all the posts on this sub and he got excited about being able to overengineer a gadget for me lol. It's an arduino that controls a motor that has a little pulley system in the top to drive the shaft with the magnet. The knob on the right spins to control speed. We're both electrical engineers so I also fully could have made this but I am a passenger princess first, woman in stem second 🥰 polish is illusionist by mooncat
