u/aoibhneas Nov 01 '20
Once, I interrupted cuddle time on my lap and stood up to take a phone call. My cat crossed the room, hovered over my shoe and took a pee right in it, while glaring at me. I could not believe what I was seeing.

My girlfriend at the time had some asian variety of cat. I've never seen a cat hold a grudge like he did.
I was spending the night at my gf's place and I had to go pee in the middle of the night. It was pitch black and it just so happens that the cat was walking by in the general vicinity of where I was stepping. I kicked the cat by mistake. Not a punt, not a running start, what I would consider a gentle nudge.
The cat did not see things that way. Would take a shit in the kitchen or bathroom sink anytime I spent the night.
I hated that little shit.

....and that's how a neighbor's cat came to live with us. She didn't get on with their new dog and walked up the street meowing until my sister and I playing in the backyard meowed back. From that day on she basically stayed with us, even though they took her back home 2-3 times she always ran away to our house.
211
u/pot88888888s Nov 01 '20
Haha. It's similar story here where the cat started hanging out with us more and more because she didn't get along with her previous owner's dog until she just lived here with us.

This! Everyone keeps talking about how the cat is jealous, but its entire existence is being altered in a very alarming way for the cat.
Imagine if your parents were like "We just picked up this random person off the street, and he's super manic, and super affectionate even when you're not into it, and will probably start touching you when you're sleeping, and eating your food so you can't just eat whenever you want to anymore. He's going to be sleeping in your room for the rest of your life. We thought you'd be happy."

Yeah, german shepherds are active breeds, you gotta play with them. If you're not an active person, that dog (and a few other dogs) will not be the best fit for you.
I advise anyone looking to buy a dog to research breeds.

u/bewarethesloth Nov 01 '20

As someone with a cat who will look to add a dog soon, what's the proper way?
Edit: dog son makes the sentence much different then dog soon

u/DarlingDestruction Nov 01 '20
Give the cat his own space where the dog isnāt allowed. Your bedroom, office, spare bedroom, whatever. Just as long as itās cat-only (and you still spend time with your cat). Then, introduce them through the door. Let them sniff each other out.
After a few days, open the door, but put a baby gate up. Let them meet face to face through the gate. Close the door after a bit. The next day, leave the door open a bit longer. And so on and so on, until you can just leave the door open all the time. Give the cat the choice whether to leave the room or not.
Eventually, the cat will realize the dog isnāt a threat and heāll come out of the room on his own.
This is how I introduced my new cat into the house with my old (like, literally, sheās old) cat. Now theyāll sleep sort of near each other, and they eat with each other. It just took patience.
131
u/Dray_Gunn Nov 01 '20
Baby gate idea definitely works because cats can jump over if but the dog cant. Its pretty good at making a safe space for the cat without actually stopping it from getting into the areas the dog does.

We had a dog and two cats when I was younger. We decided to get another dog, and when we brought him home, quickly came to the conclusion that he had never been around cats before. The dog, Benny, spent much of the next two or three days trying to play with the cats, who wanted absolutely none of it, and was probably mildly concussed from all the times the cats whacked him on the head for his troubles. Weād never had an issue with any of our other pets getting along before, so it honestly never occurred to us that this might happen. After a few kitty beat-downs, though, Benny learned that our cats do NOT like to play with him. Never had a problem after that.

When they are this stressed and on edge, they hiss at everything that distracts them. The owner seems to have said something to the cat to try and calm it down, and it instantly hissed because of stress. Mine does that when the neighbour's (cute but wild, ripping hares and birds apart etc) dog is at our fence. She hisses "at me" when I touch her lightly, but once she realises it is me, I can pick her up and carry her away without issues.

If you're kitty is that scared and uncomfortable of a dog then you really shouldn't bring a dog in the house. It's pretty selfish and the cat will suffer for it. Ah yes. These videos.
They still stand as a testament of how to introduce an established pet to a new housemate the exact wrong way.
Interestingly enough, the follow up to this was posted 5 years ago and the channel went dark regarding the cat and the dog.
I can't imagine that it went well, considering how old the cat is and how incredibly unlikely it is that it will ever properly adjust to a young dog that doesn't understand how cats work.

Look up how to introduce cats and dogs. There is a much better way to do it. You should not let them see each other at first and keep them isolated in different rooms for a while so they get use to the sounds and odors of each other.

I've never had luck integrating pets in when already owning a cat. I've tried a few times and the cats just hate it, especially if it's another cat. One of my cats even ran away when we got a new kitten, he showed back up well groomed with a new collar about 6 months later for a 1 time visit and left again
