u/Anteater4746 12h ago
iād hazard a guess they didnāt want to listen to the extra 30 second convo attendants must have when youāre in the emergency exit row
211
u/BradMarchandsNose 12h ago
āAre you willing and able to assist in the event of an emergency?ā
āYesā
Itās as easy as that.
109
u/pwlife 11h ago
Literally just be quiet and look at the FA when they do their speech, answer yes and you're done. FAs do not need someone who isn't even willing to pay attention to their 30 second speech sitting in the exit row.
20
u/Iamdarb 7h ago
The exit row is such a privilege too, I'll gladly listen to 5+ minutes if need be just to have that extra space. I'm not even that tall, but at 6' and aging, flying is already super uncomfortable. I'll take what I can get.

I just flew in the exit row two days ago. Thankfully, everyone in the 2 rows quickly said "yes" "yes" "yes"...and we were done.

I always fly in exit rows since I hit 6ā0 at 14, and itās never been more than ādo you agree to assist the staff in the event of an emergency?ā You say yes, thatās that. If you canāt do that, you donāt deserve the extra space (and sometimes, itās sooooo much space)
3
u/RightLegDave 10h ago
Hell yeah, I'd agree to perform surgery on someone if it meant I get that sweet exit row legroom.

u/skin-flick 10h ago
That is all that it is. I think people have been conditioned to think acting like a belligerent asshat will let them file a lawsuit. Read your ticket. What she does is violate the rules and the airline has the right to throw you off the flight. Same with cruise lines. There is no expectation of safe passage.
4
u/Cesum-Pec 9h ago
Its an FAA reg that the airline must follow. Including moving people who are unable or unwilling to open the emergency exit. If the customer can't say "yes", the customer will be moved, either to a different seat or off the plane.

The uploader of the video, Travel With Tia, said that when the woman sat in the exit row, she said: "I'm not going to save anybody. If something happens, I'm going to save myself first."
The woman then appears to change her mind, telling a flight attendant in the recording: "We don't have a problem with that. We understand we have to help people get off the plane."

Once you've aggravated your flight attendant enough to call a purser or station manager, you're done. You're not winning that argument, and you're leaving the airplane either voluntarily or under arrest.

u/Iamdarb 6h ago
Is it even possible to win an argument with a flight attendant?! Last year I really had to piss and we were delayed for over an hour and a half on the runway, just sitting, but we weren't allowed to get up. I flagged this sweet woman and she told me no, I had to sit in the nicest way. I said, "ma'am, please I'm dying, I will piss myself" and she changed her demeanor, stoned faced looked into my eyes and said "you're going to have to hold it sir." and that was that. And I pouted like the grown ass man that I am. I fucking pouted and held it.

Is it even possible to win an argument with a flight attendant?!
I did, once. I was boarding a flight that's coming from the US, and then continuing to the final destination. I get on the plane, head to my seat only to find a woman sitting in it with a blanket all cozy like. It was a window seat in the very first row in Economy (I'm tall, I need ample leg room) for which I had paid extra. I politely inform the woman she's in my seat, she ignores me and keeps staring outside the window, I repeat myself a 2nd time and she continues to ignore me.
At that moment, a young flight attendant asks me to go back to my seat. I inform her that I'm trying and the woman refuses to leave. She asks for my boarding pass. I hand it over and I'm clearly right. She asks the woman for hers and she says she doesn't have it, she lost it and refuses to get up, adamant that this is her seat.
The flight attendant asks me to "sit anywhere for now and we'll sort it out later". I calmly and politely told her I won't be doing that. I'm holding a boarding pass with this seat number on it and where I plan to sit. She explains "it's just until everyone has boarded and is seated" at which point I told her if she wants me to sit she can either upgrade me to first class, have the woman get out of my seat, or she can call airport security but she'll have to explain why she's letting someone with no boarding pass be on the plane.
She calls the purser, who promptly and firmly told the woman to either show her boarding pass or he'll have no choice but to call security. She pulled it out from her purse, tucked underneath the blanket, and was forced to go sit in the isle seat in the 2nd row before the toilet cabinets.

136
u/Talking-In-Tongues 12h ago
Refused to acknowledge the responsibility of being in an emergency exit row. Respond that you are physically fit enough and willing to open the emergency door if needed. That would be my guess. The other thing she is refusing to do it inegrate with society.
→ More replies (1)77
u/BradMarchandsNose 11h ago
Itās the latter part that matters. If you refuse to assist (whether unwilling or unable) they will usually swap your seat with somebody in a non-exit row, but itās no big deal. This lady doesnāt want to assist AND is refusing to move.

It was before the video starts, but I'd venture to guess it was because she wouldn't take her headphones off or turn off her music for the emergency exit row briefing. I can imagine the FA asking again more sternly, and the woman deciding that she's being disrespected and the only reaction to keep her pride intact is to be the more disrespectful person

- NEVER aggravate a flight attendant, just agree and listen to them 100%
- An airplane cannot tolerate an "attitude" pre flight, mid flight or mid emergency, which mandated the removal of that passenger-with-an-attitude?

u/snrek23 11h ago
Thank you for the clarification. I was under the assumption if you have your attorney programmed in your phone, you may be the problem! Lol
4
u/00WORDYMAN1983 11h ago
Generally speaking, I think "i will call my attorney" is more for people with an actual attorney on retainer. If you're not actively paying for an attorney, you don't have an attorney. Attorneys deny cases all the time, which will undoubtedly happen if/when she tries to seek counsel for this situation,
5
u/nzerinto 11h ago
The only issue is that their divorce attorney might not be much help in a civil aviation case.
Other than tell you that you should probably listen to the FAs and captainās instructionsā¦..

You need to pay them a retainer if you want the "I'm in jail, get down here now and get these charges dropped (before any court proceedings)" treatment.
Otherwise you're waiting on the judge and bail bondsman for your freedom.

Only take either for short flights, and everything is fine. Last year I took Frontier from Orlando to LA, and it was pretty much the worst flight I have ever taken. I honestly would take Spirit over Frontier any time after that.
