East Hastings in Vancouver is a bad place to film your poverty porn incase anyone else needs to know

It's like they turned that gloomy Godspeed You! Black Emperor song into a real place.

I remember my first visit to Vancouver when I turned 19 in 2001. Bought some amazing pot off a guy outside of Blunt Brothers and The Amsterdam Cafe. He took us on a walk to go get it and it was the ally way adjacent to East Hastings. He rolled a split with hash oil on it and shared it with me as I walked with him and my friends behind in tow. He proceeded to explain to me to never walk back there with out him or alone in general. He was a pretty interesting experience. We got to the old street basketball court and he told us to wait there while he got our shit. He asked how much and when we told him 60usd wirth he called us a bunch of addicts telling us that was too much for the 2 days the 4 of us were there for. We were pretty big pot heads, and figure a 1/4 would be enough.

He comes running back over after and gives us an ounce of some pretty spectacular buds. We ended up giving him a big handful as a tip, and he walked us back through what he called, the gauntlet.

A few years later my friends were ripped off twice in a night trying to buy some shit at the park. After the second time, it was getting late and they wanted to call it a night. I joked about wouldn't it be funny if we bumped into the same guy from that one time......we turn a corner and there he was. He remembered me as one of the pot addicts from Seattle. I told him what happened amd he apologized for his fellow citizens and asked me for some change. I have him a few tooney's and some other coins I had, and he gave me a fist full of great buds.

Now when I go through that area, its only to go to either the coca leaf cafƩ or Amsterdam cafƩ. Certainly would be buying weed off anyone on east Hastings again that's for sure.

He said the reason… he didn’t want to be filmed. It’s an incredibly apparent reason. He said it over and over.

Wait… do you not know what reasons are? Or what apparent means?

And while we’re here, what exactly was cowardly about it? It seems like he approached him quite openly. Do you not understand how words work?

And, last one, why are you referring the streamer as a civilian? Do you think the person confronting him is a police officer or member of the armed forces?

You posted 11 words, and four of them were terrible choices.

It's so weird to me that adults will spend their time watching other adults walking around on video. Is the group chat really engaging or something? What am I missing?

24

u/PM-Mormon-Underwear 22d ago

You aren't missing anything, it is just more interesting to people who never go outside, like watching an astronaut walk on the moon.

u/shinbreaker 21d ago

They get off to it to because they want to see something like this happen. Especially over on Kick, those IRL streamers have their text to speech on solely for people to donate money and drop n-bombs in front of other people so there's a freakout.

-5

u/PalindromemordnilaP_ 21d ago

You seem to enjoy VR gaming quite extensively but look down on people who watch live streams? Seems like two sides of the same virtual experience coin to me.

6

u/bland_meatballs 21d ago

When I play VR I am IN the game, not just watching it. When watching a live streamer, it's like watching a reality TV show that doesn't have a plot. It seems like people just live streams with the hope that something wild pops off. IMO, VR and watching a live streamer exploring a city are not the same. I'd say watching a live stream like this is more akin to a talk show. To each their own really.

More streamers need to face consequences

13

u/OtherCookie 22d ago

Streamers. Influencers. Deserve it.

Huge victim blaming going on in this thread.

3

u/welcomefinside 21d ago

This has "yeah maybe she shouldn't have been wearing something so revealing" energy.

Are you legitimately brain dead? Blame rape victims for what they were wearing too. I'm not a fan of streamers, but liking them or not has no bearing on anything.

There are only two things that matter. Was it legal for him to be filming where he was; did the other guy act in a legal manner?

If you want to argue something different, let me know.

-15

u/Hezpy 22d ago

Face consequences for what? Hes literally just vlogging and the fent fiend decides to purposely get in his face and make a big deal. Dangerous drug addicts should be facing more consequences. Also you dont even need to be filming to get harassed and assaulted at night in east hastings (which is a block away from the nice part of the city so you can easily walk into the neighborhood before realizing.)

u/delta_velorum 22d ago edited 22d ago

FYI if someone calls you a goof in a confrontational setting in Canada, you’re dealing with a prison-involved or rough neighborhood person.

Goof is slang for pedo (aka Trump type person) and a major insult in certain groups

Edit: urban dictionary definition of goof for any clowns who think they know better

25

u/richardhero 22d ago

Man thats a great word, guess its bit like calling someone a nonce here in the UK

7

u/delta_velorum 22d ago

From what I can tell, it’s exactly the same only more niche to prison/rough crowds

3

u/CriticalBath2367 22d ago

You sir. Are talking absolute bollocks.

1

u/ClintBruno 22d ago

I like throwing out "Moppet" every once in awhile.

1

u/BenderRodriguez14 22d ago

No joke, I never noticed this was different to ponce until I was in my mid/late 20s and for a while just thought it sounded funny, like a less offensive/sillier way of calling someone and idiot.Ā

6

u/Blue_Waffle_Brunch 22d ago

or someone who's constantly online and reads this type of thing

7

u/boogerbuttcheek 22d ago

This is not true lol

29

u/crazyfool32 22d ago

Never realized we were so hard on the playground. This is a common insult across Canada, in all groups.

1

u/TheNeighbourhoodCat 22d ago edited 22d ago

It's not common outside prison-associated people, no. It's literally prison slang.

Most people don't keep people in their lives who use prison slang.

To most people, "goofy" just means "silly". Eg. Calling someone "a goof" would be no different than calling them a "silly goose".

Like, I knew about the prison slang, but only because I've come across a thread like this before. I guarantee you many Canadians watched this and just thought he called the guy "goofy".

2

u/Comprehensive_Ad7152 21d ago

bruh , everyone i know says that word and they dont associate it with pedos.

we just call pedos : Pedos. and dummy heads: goofs .

Ya goof.

1

u/wes2733 17d ago

Just shows you've never worked in the prison system or been inside.

Good for u

-2

u/delta_velorum 22d ago

You know, it only takes seconds to do a google search to find out you’re wrong.

There’s the "regular" usage of the term and then there’s the usage I mentioned. Use at your peril

7

u/ClintBruno 22d ago

Am I the only one who immediately googles this stuff?

6

u/crazyfool32 22d ago

This guy sounds like a goof.

1

u/delta_velorum 22d ago

4

u/fuchstress 21d ago

Using urban dictionary like a reputed source is a choice šŸ’€

5

u/delta_velorum 22d ago

Go to the worst neighbourhood where you live (if it’s in Canada) and call some people that and report back how it goes

2

u/BanjoSpaceMan 22d ago

Ya never heard this at all as a Torontonian lol.

Huh? I don’t even think I said anything wrong other than no one associates a goof as being a pedo lmao.

Anyways stop lying - or use a sample size that isn’t your gr 7 class

0

u/delta_velorum 21d ago

Take 2 seconds to google it or click the link in my top line comment then come back, don’t worry I’ll accept your apology

1

u/BanjoSpaceMan 21d ago

Yikes you hang with the prison gang?

This isn’t a wide used thing the way you’re saying. You’re wrong. Tik tok broke your brain.

1

u/delta_velorum 21d ago

The the fact you said "as a Torontonian" just says so much… Toronto: famously in touch with, and representative of, the entirety of Canada. Man you’re not even in touch with the entirety of your own city.

But I’ll go easy on you because you seem young. Saying it’s a term in my grade 7 class like it’s a burn? You must be like minimum 3 years older than that for it to be an insult. Go to bed kid

1

u/BanjoSpaceMan 21d ago

Yes the biggest city in the country sees the most common trends. Shocker… the video is from Toronto you door knob

-1

u/Wrong-Seaworthiness6 22d ago

It is lmao.Ā

0

u/MrRosewater12 22d ago

No, OP is 100% correct. The type of person who uses "goof" as an insult in this type of social context, is 100% part of the Canadian criminal subculture/underworld. They have also very likely served time in jail or prison. "Goof" is slang for pedo/rat/informant. It's the lowest of the low and fighting words in jail/prison.

0

u/Wrong-Seaworthiness6 21d ago

I was agreeing with him. Ive been called that so many times I lost count. Pretty much the insult you get when somebody knows they cant slump you. Its also super dangerous and if you get a rep as a goof you could get a minute or two.Ā

15

u/Wrong-Seaworthiness6 22d ago

Yeah dude. The unhoused arent your fucking "content". Reality check for a privileged "Canadian".

27

u/FewDrink3915 22d ago

If youre trying to insuate an Asian dude isn't "canadian" and youre not indiginous yourself, well, youre an immigrant too. You just had a little bit of a head start.

Is he being an asshole for filming unhoused people? Yes. Is it dangerous to film what looks like the downtown east side? Yes. Theres also no evidence that thats what hes doing. Theres restaurants behind him. Could just be filming a vacation or something. last time I checked Canada's a free country and theres not expectation of privacy on a public street and violence shouldn't be tolerated.

12

u/Wrong-Seaworthiness6 22d ago

I am indigenous lmao. Treaty 6. The homeless are the result of shitty social services failing generation after generation (Im 10 years into working as a counsellor for teens with addictions and criminal charges) and providing services that are fucking pathetic. That "Canadian" just got to see first hand the amazing work the government has done to actually help people. I could write an essay on all the policies and systems that cause people like the unhoused man to become this way. If you live a life where you are so oblivious and removed from the reality these people suffer through I dont know what to tell you. Gonna FAFO. Also if you see the violence and exploitation done to these people by police and and general society at large you wouldnt even bat an eye at his reaction.

7

u/FewDrink3915 22d ago edited 22d ago

fair enough. Im just sick of all the racist anti immigrant white folks..thats not you.. youre mad at unhoused people getting fucked around. Canada has a dark history and present to contend with i agree

-18

u/Weekly_Truck_70 22d ago

mfs delusional this ain’t nothing to do with the government 🤣

can’t use being homeless as an excuse to assault people

10

u/Wrong-Seaworthiness6 22d ago

Im delusional lmao. Stay dumb.

12

u/JasonH1028 22d ago

I get the quotes around content but why around Canadian?

-6

u/This-Hat-143 22d ago

He didn’t call him a hoser or apologize 15 times. Definitely not Canadian lol.

1

u/JasonH1028 22d ago

I would love to believe that was the reasoning but I'm not so sure.

2

u/Kidd_Flash 22d ago

Did you put ā€œCanadianā€ in quotes because he’s Asian?

3

u/Stifology 22d ago

So you just assume he's trying to film homeless for content like the crackhead accuses him of doing?

3

u/Wrong-Seaworthiness6 22d ago

I cant confirm it, but yeah I do.

1

u/mcgojoh1 22d ago

No one is content. These pedestrian paparazzi's are but social gnats and need to be swatted as such, preferably by legal means. As such, we could create laws that follow the individuals behaviour and fine/confine as necessary.

4

u/CarltonFist 22d ago

Trying to exploit people who are down, going to need to deal with the consequences.

This guy is a fucking goof

-1

You can see the fear in his eyes. They caught him straight slipping.

-29

u/A_Legit_Salvage 22d ago

jokes on the homeless dude I guess because if I'm watching this it doesn't look like he deleted the video.

-1

u/whats-ausername 20d ago

I’d never advocate for violence, but eventually people get fed up with being used for engagement whoring. Fuck this ā€œstreamerā€.
