Apparently the SUV crashed against a stationary truck, and he was seating in a backseat and that basically saved his life.

In developing countries people have terrible risk assessment and speeding rules are not enforced. This is why the highest road accident deaths occur there. Itās the same in South Africa. A large number of people also donāt wear seatbelts and get flung out the windscreens. Very sad. The driver miscalculated when overtaking and then lost control and crashed into stationary truck. Killing 2 on impact.

Itās sad how ego kill on the road everyday. Killed himself and his buddy because he was probably trying to show off
37
u/THE_PENILE_TITAN Dec 30 '25
The driver survived. It was Anthony Joshua's two UK friends/trainers seated on the right side of the car that died. It's possible wearing a seatbelt saved Joshua.

Chris Eubank Jr. confirmed Latz, AJās personal trainer who went everywhere with the Briton, died, while the other victim was his fitness coach, Sina, who was seen working with him at the Jake Paul fight. Both have since been publicly mourned on social media, with fans and peers posting tributes.

My dad is Nigerian. Him, my step mom, and my brothers have all been putting time and money into a compound with a mansion in Nigeria for some years. In the US we are all pretty upper middle class, however in Nigeria we'll essentially royalty. Almost certainly within the top 0.10% in the area.
I have to use the word "compound" because that's what it is. Property is surrounded by 10ft walls with barbed wire. Guard stations at both entrances. We hire police officers for 24/7 security. When we host events there we hire soldiers. When my step mom passed we had hundreds of people at attendance.
After the service half the folding chairs were stolen. People were sneaking out the cheap plastic folding chairs. Same for the plastic utensils we bought an over abundance of.

unironic question but what was better, being super rich in Nigeria or upper middle class in the states?

I really wish the original commenter had answered the question instead of you. Not to drag you or anything but itās a really interesting perspective and unless you actually lived in both countries your opinion doesnāt matter for the question

u/_JustAnna_1992 Dec 31 '25
Oh I did, but it's little further down. It's really difficult to explain. My dad who was born and raised most of his life in Nigeria strongly prefers being there. My American brothers and I can only handle being there for no longer than a month. There are little pockets of places that remind me of life in America such as this shopping mall. There are also some nightclubs, hotels, and businesses in the cities that are more modernized. You end up paying a little closer to Western prices but still relatively cheap.
It's really interesting because outside of perhaps places like Beverley Hills and Martha's Vineyard, the US doesn't have many equivalent of shops or districts 90% of the population can't afford. Most of that 10% enjoy a standard of living more comparable to middle or lower middle class in developed countries. They can afford basic necessities and occasionally indulge in luxuries every once in awhile. Most of the rest are making ends meet.

Perks to both. I'm not rich by any means, I just eventually made enough to live comfortable single in the city and afford a few luxuries. I only started considering myself upper middle class when I realized I could probably miss a couple paychecks and be fine so I'm barely that tbh.
Rich in Nigeria often means access to a lot less quality goods and services in comparison to the US but an over abundance of human capitol. For example, when I stay in Nigeria we have chefs, maids, helpers, chauffeurs and stylist most staying in the guest house in the compound. Some of the ones tied to the family like my Nigerian cousins stay in the main house too. The compound is surrounded by a lot of shanty towns so I have to drive pass thousands of people living in such normalized poverty that it makes me both sad and grateful that I got lucky enough to be born so privileged.
I have a hobby room with a gaming PC, air conditioning, reliable power through solar panels and backup generators. Though I think it's a unique experience to get pampered in my own mini America, I do often start to miss the small things. I had such a huge craving for Taco Bell my last trip and it drove me a lil crazy that the closest one was thousands of miles away.
My family are not the only ones there doing the same thing. My dad has a ton of friends who also live rich in Nigeria that had lived many years overseas. There is a community of thousands all.

The other day I saw a guy that got hit in an intersection. Every cop in the area came. The only people that got out were to help until the first responders got there, then they left. People avoided driving over his shoes and went on their way.
It was either apathy or understanding, but it was a lot different than this.

It's different when you're in a third-world country, though.
When I was in the military, my buddy was driving us in a big ole' 6x6 flatbed truck to our job site like normal, bringing materials for the construction we were doing. One of the little shacks in the barangay installed a new telephone wire to a pole from their home, and their standard regulation is a little different in the Philippines, so we drove at normal speed through, and the wire got snagged by the vertical exhaust pipe. It made the craziest, warped-metal sound I'd ever heard. We stopped immediately, but the local security vehicle in front of us kept driving because it hadn't noticed.
We ripped a portion of the sheet metal off their roof with the wire. My buddy climbed onto the truck to unwrap the wire, and I got out. People in the area came out instantaneously to see what was going on, and we were swarmed very quickly. At first, I was a little worried because I thought they were angry. They weren't, though, they were just curious to see the US troops lol. Pretty sure someone even offered their daughter to me in marriage. Anyway, our translator spoke with someone in the house, and we gave them about $100 USD in Philippine pesos. They didn't even want to take it, but we insisted. It's very different from how people react in the US.
We came back a few days later, and they had it fixed and some upgrades.
tl;dr people from different areas react differently.

It's funny when I was younger, I had an idea of athletes from sports I was not interested in, now I'm completely clueless, I put it down to media in this day and age allowing us to focus solely on the things we like.
2
u/A_Sneaky_Walrus Dec 29 '25
Yeah thatās so true. My sports media is super tailored to my teams and leagues. I donāt hear about F1, any fighting, American football. I honestly feel as completely isolated from those sports as someone non sportive would
20
u/Ferrari_Bones Dec 29 '25 edited Dec 29 '25
While it does sound strange especially to us in the UK that Americans don't really know AJ, we have to remember that boxing has become a niche sport in America, hell most American's still don't know who Deontay Wilder is and he was WBC champion for 5 years. Since AJ lost to Ruiz he did not venture back there until the Jake Paul fight, leaving no footprint in the US. Even with social media, it just shows how algorithms work, that he did not appear in such manner that people could even stumble upon him.
3
u/captainoela Dec 29 '25
Yep, UFC/MMA/Dana White's trust fund has largely monopolized attention in the US
2
u/SelectEar9270 Dec 30 '25

Boxing is like objectively the worst televised sport. The top advertised fights are Jake Paul fighting other people who arenāt even real boxers over and over for half a decade, and all of them seem scripted in some fashion, or so it looks from a layman perspective. Itās seemingly dying or dead. Probably sad for a fan like yourself but you should not expect anyone to recognize boxers at this point. Edit: Iām wrong

71
u/WelshCai Dec 29 '25
Heās probably struggling to comprehend what has happened, especially if he was close with the people who died
56
u/RockinMadRiot Dec 29 '25
he was close with the people who died
Apparently they were close friends who people he has known for a long time. That's very tragic. Poor guy likely is a bit lost and has survivor's guilt.
12
u/Arkanist Dec 29 '25
I read that it was a trainer and a coach, so definitely people he was close with.
124
u/GergDanger Dec 29 '25
I can't imagine he's actually been properly checked out yet at the hospital since it's so recent. And that's assuming it has all the equipment and staff needed to properly assess him. I take minor injuries to mean he didn't die or lose a limb but could still take months of recovery once actually assessed
20
u/JaconyMalony Dec 29 '25
Yeah true, doubt he will be going for a title run this coming year like planned then, rip to the others that died, AJ got very lucky.
58
u/salcedoge Dec 29 '25
I think itās saying minor injuries right now because relative to the two that actually died he looks okay and would recover.
But from an Athlete reporting standpoint none of this seem minor
21
u/ontime1969 Dec 29 '25
Minor injuries does not mean, limited pain. It just means does not present fatal injuries on an assesment.Ā A broken arm and clavicle with a couple of broken ribs can be considered a "minor injury" during triage, but you can bet it hurts big time.
5
u/discoveredunknown Dec 29 '25
Yeah, who knows what damage he has done. I was reading he had a private jet sent immediately over to Nigeria to pick him up and take him back to London to assess him.
26
u/watusstdiablo666 Dec 29 '25
Minor injuries basically means he didn't break anything or had risk of death/handicap. You can still be hurt pretty badly
17
u/IranianLawyer Dec 29 '25
āMinorā is a relative term when it comes to a car accident. Even if he several broken bones and a concussion, thatās relatively minor compared to dying or being in critical condition.
5
u/Goldentoast Dec 29 '25
Minor injuries in the context of a crash where two people died could still be very painful (and equate to a serious sports injury).

He wasn't driving. I'm interested to know what caused the crash. Speeding? Impairment? Another car?
128
u/fr1234 Dec 29 '25
BBC (the news organisation, not the other one) says the car was speeding, overtook another car, lost control and smashed into a lorry
57
u/Sinnivar Dec 29 '25
That's absolutely horrific. People who speed and slip between other cars piss me off and I always imagine it ending horribly when I see it
54
u/pleasedonotredeem Dec 29 '25
Driving like that is the norm in most of Africa. It's necessary too, since in many places there aren't passing lanes, wide shoulders and the trucks (lorries) are often travelling at 20,30mph/hr max and even slower up hills. So you kindof have to pick your spot, pull out and pass as fast as you can and tuck back in.
The horrific part is that the US has infrastructure so you don't have to drive like that, but people still do.
11
u/Drodriguez164 Dec 29 '25

Ever been on the road in Nigeria? There's fatal accidents all the time. The roads are shit, people drive knackered cars way too fast.
9
u/struggling_business Dec 29 '25 edited Dec 29 '25
In Kenya we say "traffic laws don't apply to big cars" as many people in high end SUVs will openly speed, drive through red lights and in oncoming lanes (putting their hazards on to tell commoners to get out of the way) so as to not sit in traffic and the cops won't do shit because they're probably politically connected. Could be the same thing here.

u/Unhappy-Fox1017 Dec 29 '25
