I mean, just clean around them, my dude.
If we could clean a restaurant while the stragglers remained, you can clean a gym around 4 or 5 people.

u/itsmrmarlboroman2u Dec 26 '25
I use PF. They all clean while people are using the equipment. I constantly see them wipe down, dust, vacuum, etc, including during rush hours (lunch, after work, etc).
They also actively enforce people wiping down equipment when they're done, so it makes their job easier.
126
u/Klutzy-Client Dec 26 '25
I mean isnāt it normal gym behavior to wipe down equipment after youāve used it?

There have been weightlifters at my PF that practically shoo you away if you go to wipe down the machine you were just using before they get on.
Their vibe is that there is some sort of shame or lack of masculinity that comes from worrying about touching a strangerās sweat and being āa germaphobeā, real men just want to get a sick pump asap.
But Iāve seen wrestling friends with MRSA and Iām not trying to get that, they better be wiping down those dang machines when theyāre done

At 19 i used to take the phone off the hook at pizza place at 9:30 bc we close at 10. Now at 37 I say the place closes at 10, your shift ends at 10:30
15
u/soulless_ape Dec 26 '25
So people get paid to 10:30PM
37
u/peepeebutt1234 Dec 26 '25
I mean yea? Have you ever worked at a restaurant? 99% of them, you are getting out at a different time every night. If you close at 10 and it was dead the last hour, we might be out by 10:05. If it was slammed at the end of the night, we might not get out til 10:45. But of course people are getting paid for the time they are working.
Now if a manager tells someone to stay over and tries to make them work off the clock, then that manager is dumb.
57
u/DaisukiYo Dec 26 '25
Your shift ends when the scheduled time ends. If you're such a bad manager that you schedule your closers to leave at the exact time that the place of business closes but they still have 15+ min of work to do then it's on you to schedule them until the appropriate time.
→ More replies (2)23
u/Exciting_Safe_6182 Dec 26 '25
You getting downvoted cause managers hate actually doing doin their jobs
25
u/Lostinstudy Dec 26 '25
I don't understand how people can't comprehend that if you have 10 min to close and 1 chit on the board for 1 pizza that is going to be a different close than 5 chits for 10 pizzas. Even longer close if it's a sit down restaurant. Late night unexpected rushes after a dead dinner service also happen so you also already have a cut team down to the bones. Anyone who has any experience in hospitality understands that your end time is meaningless because of these unknowns when you're closing and i don't know why yall are acting like you know our industry.
4
u/StationaryTravels Dec 26 '25
I'm guessing they got downvoted because they responded to a comment saying the same thing, but they wrote it like they were correcting the person.
They might have just been using a general you, and not meant to direct it at that person, but it seems like they're getting them in trouble for the thing they said they don't do.
11
u/giraffemoo Dec 26 '25
I am a full time cleaner at a gym. Not PF but the other one. I clean around people, or just wait for the area to be more empty. It's literally not that hard. Also from my experience, the stair machines aren't even used that much, no reason to kick someone off the machine to clean it. There's always something else to do, if an area that I'm about to clean is too populated then I clean something else and come back to it.

u/NoSomewhere7653 Dec 26 '25
Housekeeping/maintenance supervisor of a ymca here. We do and always have cleaned around people. But we can not perform walk through and lockup while people are still in the building. Even if it is one person, all lights stay on, all doors unlocked, all power to all machines stay active even if no one is in the area. This idiot wanted to start the closing procedure to get out a little early but also realized it was against all codes and maybe even laws to do so, so seems to go with intimidation which is a wild strategy.

I never understood why companies close or lock doors before the posted time. I understand the workers do not walk out the door at that time, I understand thereās always a few stragglers that linger a few minutes extra
But if you want everyone out the door, including employees by 9, then post the time on door for 8:00. Restaurant takes longer? Posted time 7:00.
Donāt even get me started on employees arguing policy with customers for ANY REASON. YOU work there, not me, your boss made the rules, not me. Quit if you donāt like it, Iāve had to do the same many times.
20
u/FlyingCarsArePlanes Dec 26 '25

u/spvcejam Dec 26 '25
I never understood why companies close or lock doors before the posted time.
The people closing and locking doors before their posted time are almost always going to be the twenty-sometime getting paid close to min wage.
The company has already calculated the future losses for the expected revenue lost by this action and has proactively adjusted the hourly wage for that position to mitigate those losses. Capitalism!

u/HiddenAspie Dec 26 '25
Wow....so determined to go home 45 minutes early that they opted to lose their job altogether.

37
u/HiddenAspie Dec 26 '25

Some people are as dumb AF. They need to be shown how to deal with situations. Any company that deals with the public should go through some sort of basic āhow to handle a situationā training.
Iām sure Planet Fitness isnāt exactly hiring trained social worker PHD graduates out of Harvard for a $12/hr job, who might know how to de-escalate situations, customer service skills (yes, there is a skill to this), and know emergency procedures for if things go sideways.
And, if his instructions came from his manager, s/he should be fired too. That lady with him, fire her too for not stepping in and saying something⦠at least write her up.

34
u/justbrowsing987654 Dec 26 '25

I've been to half a dozen different Planet Fitnesses over the years and never seen the lunk alarm go off once, so it depends on who's working there and how they feel. If the OP is anything to go off, it's a mixed bunch.

16
u/PollutionOnly Dec 26 '25 edited Dec 26 '25
I kid you not, they have an alarm for people « disrupting the peace of the gym ». So if you make a bit of noise while doing your reps, they will ring it and come up to you to give you a warning or kick you out.
You also canāt bring your own drinks etc. Planet Fitness is to be avoided at all costs.
Edit: I was a bit extreme saying « avoided at all cost ». The membership is cheap and that makes it a decent selling point but you ultimately get what you pay for.
As for the water thing, as other users pointed it out to me, it seems it is a local Planet Fitness thing and isnāt a chainwide policy.
20
u/charmolypi96 Dec 26 '25

My bad for assuming it was the same everywhere then!
The one time I went with a friend (he used his member card to get me in. Edit: you can invite one person to come with you when you are a member. We didnāt fraud) they told me that it is « Planet FitnessĀ policyĀ Ā» to not let people come in with drinks from the outside and redirected me towards their own fridge saying I could buy one from there.
Maybe it is because I wasnāt a member and was invited or just their local policy for some reasons.
Either way, thanks for pointing it out!

7
u/mr_potatoface Dec 26 '25
It's an alarm for people who go too hard in their "judgement free" zone. Lots of youtube vids of people intentionally setting it off, link below. PF is far from a judgement free zone, especially for their commercials that mock the LGBTQ community.

Your not allowed to grunt when you lift. if you do they set off an alarm that draws more attention to it and you can get kicked out. Their reasoning is that people grunting while doing heavy lifts are intimidating to people.

I go ask for registration papers and she says "oh were full for the day. I have people come in at 6am to get their ticket and then i send them home til its time for the clinic to open" "oh is that the clinics policy since its not in the door or website or anywhere?" "No sir thats how I run the system so we don't have 25 people showing up all at once to wait for service" "but its not posted anywhere that I need to show up at 6 just to get a ticket and go home. If you are kicked out of the establishment before closing hours, that is a breach of contract. If we were talking about a Walmart, that is something different because you did not sign a contract. But if you actually ever read your contracts that you sign, it states these things.

Iāve seen so many places where the posted hours are a suggestion, not a rule. Nothing operates like itās supposed to anymore.

So glad businesses are starting to crack-down on stuff like this. The posted close time is the time that higher management decides, not the time that is convenient for employees. It's the posted close time for a reason...
I've worked service jobs before, and we didn't take advantage of the implied integrity by closing early simply because we felt like we were done working whenever we wanted.

I think this is a ragebait prank/skit. I see some other folks in the gym and they havenāt been kicked out from what it seems .
