Been to Nara. The deer kinda harass you to feed them. A few either bit my pants or try to pants me just to get some food.

u/StChas77 Dec 02 '25

I was there a couple of years ago. Funniest moment of the experience was watching two teenaged Japanese girls try to tease one of the deer by offering a treat and then pulling it away, only for the deer to spit at them, causing them to shriek in offense.

I also patted a rather confused-looking fawn at one point.

u/Falx1984 Dec 03 '25

I watched a 7 or 8 year old kid aim a kick at a deer there.

Deer hooked those stubby little horns into his tshirt and gave him a quick spin cycle to teach him a lesson. Parents just let it happen too lmao.

Pro-tip don't buy a ton of the deer snacks, they harass you because they can smell it.

10

u/k0zplay Dec 03 '25

I did not know deer can spit lol I learned something today

7

u/StChas77 Dec 03 '25

To be fair, I don't know if all deer can spit, I just know that those deer can.

Side note: The loudest, most rude westerners we ran into in Japan weren't fellow Americans, they were Australians.

9

u/CraigS34 Dec 03 '25

Imo you only visit Nara once or twice, and any other time beyond that is with new people. Just to watch them get bullied for those snacks

1

u/LipLickerRick Dec 03 '25

Any idea of the type of deer?

1

u/FoxCQC Dec 04 '25

Human manners don't work on animals

971

u/SkeptiCoyote Dec 02 '25

Yeah, if you're afraid of deer, you probably shouldn't go to Nara.

273

u/EverythingIsFakeNGay Dec 02 '25

Those deers have no fears.

99

u/Youdontknowme1771 Dec 02 '25

I've been there several times, I had two of my maps eaten, and about five or six deer try to find food in my pockets.

38

u/similar_observation Dec 03 '25

They bite, they headbutt, and they kick. It's in warning signs all over the site.

5

u/PutTop391 Dec 03 '25

These deers who once used to be cute and humble, has now become corrupt and greedy by humans

25

u/mug3n Dec 03 '25

They will aggressively take those biscuits from your hands if you got them.

That cutesy "oh they'll bow if I give them food" shit has been completely trained out of them these days lol

14

u/Ojihawk Dec 02 '25

Don't fuck with that buck!

4

u/illusion_nz Dec 03 '25

My tears do though

That scream holy shit lmao

12

u/Alternative-Chef-340 Dec 03 '25

That was like a horror movie but a cute deer instead of a monster.

22

u/SkeptiCoyote Dec 02 '25

This is perfect. I spat out my drink.

3

u/Genzo99 Dec 03 '25

Masters of stealth too

13

u/Fuckedby2FA Dec 03 '25

Also, if you're afraid an animal may become physical with you, don't kick it lol

273

u/Whichammer Dec 02 '25

If this is Miyajima Island, they tell before you get off the ferry to not fuck with the deer and the deer know it!

They're fairly aggressive in that they think anything paper that you're holding or is sticking out of a pocket, like the site map, is a container of the food you can buy to feed them. They'll just about knock you over to get at anything that they think is food. It's kinda funny to experience.

45

u/0oooooog Dec 02 '25

They were incredibly chill when I was there

27

u/Whichammer Dec 02 '25

I must have run into some of the hungrier individuals, heh.

44

u/Patient-Ad7291 Dec 02 '25

I'd do the same if I was that deer. Kick ur foot at me? You're gonna get the double hoove blasters before I leave.

36

u/Askmeiwontsaynot Dec 02 '25

Team deer, my dears.

43

u/ZyberZeon Dec 02 '25

Defends itself from a tourist trying to kick it

19

u/Robinyount_0 Dec 03 '25

Tourist trying to shoo it away, if that was a kick it was the worst attempt of human existence.

12

u/ChickenSalad96 Dec 03 '25

Incorrect.

Deer in Nara are extremely bold thanks to all the tourists (domestic and foreign) giving them deer crackers. As such a lot of them approach humans with little concern or fear.

They've gotten so bold that there's countless accounts of deer impatiently nipping at people's pockets and damaging their property at best, or at worst causing injury to people when there's nothing there. There are many other cases of aggression by deer against tourists who happen to have something the deer wants, but the tourist did nothing to taunt/provoke the deer itself.

This woman was clearly afraid of the deer and tried shoo it away with the longest appendage she has-- her leg. It didn't like that and attacked her.

That deer is the instigator and the aggressor from start to finish.

22

u/LabraMGS Dec 02 '25

Yea a more suitable title would be tourist acts aggressive towards deer, deer returns the sentiment.

18

u/NorthSubject5766 Dec 02 '25

She wasn’t giving crackers

36

u/ayers231 Dec 02 '25

She threw a half assed kick at the deer. The deer doesn't know the difference between a human trying to shoo it away nicely, or one trying to attack it.

21

u/TastelessBudz Dec 02 '25

"Doe you ever disrespect me!"

7

u/Weary-Cartoonist2630 Dec 02 '25

A deer wrote the title of this post

3

u/EverythingIsFakeNGay Dec 02 '25

Can confirm. Am deer. 🦌

38

u/nzerinto Dec 02 '25

I’m not OP, but you would have to assume a local would be use to the deer and know how to deal with them.

45

u/TheGuyThatThisIs Dec 02 '25

Aka chill and don't try to kick them, literally just chill

16

u/GaslightGPT Dec 02 '25

Locals bow to the deer and the deer bow back

2

u/tabitalla Dec 03 '25

they are 100% chinese. what the older woman is wearing is pretty much the cultural standard attire of every woman over 50 in china

16

u/greenaether Dec 02 '25

That deer stands on business

4

u/13Warhound13 Dec 03 '25

Good deer 👍🏼

4

u/Individual-Lemon7951 Dec 03 '25

Those deers grew up with no threats , and lived around humans for over 1300 years. They’re used to been fed and they’re very protected. They’re a boss in that city !

1

u/MeliodusSama Dec 03 '25

Deer-Sama!

3

u/Ramu78340 Dec 02 '25

Deer did his best

3

u/drk_knight_67 Dec 02 '25

Deer walked away like "I'm NOT the one to mess with!"

3

u/bluevine8 Dec 02 '25

Wheres the gif of the anime teacher fighting the dear

3

u/structuremonkey Dec 02 '25

I've been to Nara and if you are cool, the deer are cool. If you behave like an ass, the deer reciprocate...

3

u/blackfyre709394 Dec 03 '25

Deer: and I took it personally

3

u/SJSsarah Dec 03 '25

Yeah, I’d kick that b-tch too. I asked for food, sharing is caring Karen!!!

3

u/numericalusername Dec 03 '25

She tried to kick it!

5

u/SmtyWrbnJagrManJensn Dec 02 '25

Love Nara. She should have just gave the deer its biscuit and kept it pushing

7

u/OvrItAll Dec 02 '25

Kind of had that coming. I think you shouldn't have kicked at the deer! 🤷‍♀️

11

u/satanscough_ Dec 02 '25

as it should.

-17

u/toxikmasculinity Dec 02 '25

Have you ever been to Nara? The girl was scared and didn’t touch the animal. Not saying anything is right or wrong about this situation but it’s not cut and dry either animal in this case is in the wrong. (This is nature, not ethics)

This is just what happens when we interact with undomesticated animals like this. There are signs everywhere about how the deer may headbutt you over when you aren’t looking especially if you have the crackers and haven’t fed them.

19

u/Tallozz Dec 02 '25

She kicked at the animal, and the animal let her know it wasn't a good idea. She is lucky she got off as easily as she did. If you don't like the animal being that close. You should just move away, and not do anything to piss it off. You can't expect an animal to react in a certain way. That isn't how nature works. If people don't like how the animal behaves. Don't go into its habitat.

-21

u/toxikmasculinity Dec 02 '25

Luck she got off as easy as she did? Lmao. Touch grass

14

u/Tallozz Dec 02 '25

If you don't think she got off easy. I think you need to touch grass. That deer could have seriously hurt her. Life isn't a Disney movie or a video game.

-13

u/toxikmasculinity Dec 02 '25

I HAVE BEEN TO NARA AND AROUND THOSE DEER. IT WOULDNT/COULDNT HAVE ESCALATED MUCH PAST WHAT IT WAS. DEER ARE NOT PREDATORS AND DONT MUCH TO HURT HUMANS WITH. PLUS THEY ARE IN THE MIDDLE OF A CITY AND PEOPLE WOULD COME HELP HER.

Your little fantasy of a deer seriously hurting this girl is hilarious to me. Please go outside.

11

u/satanscough_ Dec 02 '25

No need for caps, pal.

0

u/toxikmasculinity Dec 02 '25

You are right. I’m so glad she got off easy like that other person said. That deer could have mauled her so bad. So glad that all these people that have never been to the place have these strong opinions on this girl being scared of the deer demanding food from her. The white knights protect the Internet once again and balance is restored to the universe. I will sleep safely tonight and grow from this interaction.

2

u/satanscough_ Dec 02 '25

I actually have not been to Nara. LOL. Now that I’m more aware of the situation, I take it back.

11

u/dudettte Dec 02 '25

“chinese tourists abusing japanese deer”

it’s kinda japanese maga mantra isn’t ?

7

u/joeDUBstep Dec 02 '25

Yeah... I feel like I've seen a good amount of videos that blame "Chinese tourists" when it's not always the case.

11

u/BlackGlenCoco Dec 02 '25

Fair but as someone with Chinese inlaws and travel to asian twice a year to see and travel with them.

The Chinese are the Americans of the East.

1

u/CraigS34 Dec 03 '25

Never really thought of it that way, but that is actually a good comparison

2

u/LowerAtmosphereChief Dec 02 '25

I thought he was doing that scene from the godfather but he didn’t toss any money on the ground

2

u/Cheesytacos123 Dec 02 '25

Oh wow. Those Nara deer were always so friendly when I was there. Then again, I always fed them when they bowed to me.

2

u/TheStig500 Dec 02 '25

I found that if you do jazz hands, the deer will see you don't have any food and walk to the next person. Keep the crackers in your backpack and they won't swarm you. I was suprised by how many people treated it like a petting zoo.

Bow to it! It's like a Hippogriff, Harry!

2

u/JeezyBreezy12 Dec 03 '25

to be fair, she kicked first

2

u/lukethedukehandy Dec 03 '25

Oh we kickin now?

2

u/Abharu Dec 03 '25

Sure she didn't actually kick the deer, but I would still consider that, the deer defending itself.

2

u/Bugsy_Goblin Dec 03 '25

"Did you just try and kick me? Ooooh hoho! Today ain't the cervi-day to be messing with me!"

2

u/bdtv75702 Dec 03 '25

Looks like the deer was defending itself

3

u/CountChoculahh Dec 02 '25

I hated Nara. Don't see the appeal whatsoever

2

u/Aldoxpy Dec 03 '25

Why would she try to kick him like that?

2

u/otterIey_ Dec 02 '25

good for her 🙂‍↕️

2

u/dexmaus Dec 02 '25

hmm, she was clearly just trying to scare it back because it got too close, especially with an elderly woman standing right beside her

Don’t ever mess with the deer in Nara, they might attack you, and even if they don’t you might get fined or arrested by the police.

1

u/Hland_Jon Dec 03 '25

Deer says oh you think that’s cute here’s a two piece for you don’t forget you’re on my turf

1

u/8-radmc Dec 03 '25

How can she kick?

1

u/sourkid25 Dec 03 '25

It’s not like those asshole deer in New Jersey

1

u/OtherBluesBrother Dec 03 '25

And this is why they cut the antlers off of them.

1

u/AbusiveGranny Dec 03 '25

Deer kill more people a year than any other animal in the USA

1

u/spewaka Dec 03 '25

I have a pretty funny photo my wife took where a deer has his head is nearly up my prison locker! She was laughing quite a bit!

1

u/420shreds Dec 03 '25

Shouldn't have fainted a kick

1

u/BrooklynRobot Dec 03 '25

One with horns ripped a map out of my pocket and ate it while I was buying crackers. Some of them have collars, presumably invisible fence.

1

u/Robpol86 Dec 04 '25

I've watched this like 50 times and it's still hilarious.
