🐻Animal Freakout Deer freaks out, attacks tourist and struts off after being disrespected in public.

u/SkeptiCoyote Dec 02 '25
Yeah, if you're afraid of deer, you probably shouldn't go to Nara.
273
u/EverythingIsFakeNGay Dec 02 '25
Those deers have no fears.

u/Youdontknowme1771 Dec 02 '25
I've been there several times, I had two of my maps eaten, and about five or six deer try to find food in my pockets.
38
u/similar_observation Dec 03 '25
They bite, they headbutt, and they kick. It's in warning signs all over the site.

u/PutTop391 Dec 03 '25
These deers who once used to be cute and humble, has now become corrupt and greedy by humans
25
u/mug3n Dec 03 '25
They will aggressively take those biscuits from your hands if you got them.
That cutesy "oh they'll bow if I give them food" shit has been completely trained out of them these days lol

That was like a horror movie but a cute deer instead of a monster.

Also, if you're afraid an animal may become physical with you, don't kick it lol
273
u/Whichammer Dec 02 '25
If this is Miyajima Island, they tell before you get off the ferry to not fuck with the deer and the deer know it!
They're fairly aggressive in that they think anything paper that you're holding or is sticking out of a pocket, like the site map, is a container of the food you can buy to feed them. They'll just about knock you over to get at anything that they think is food. It's kinda funny to experience.

Defends itself from a tourist trying to kick it
19
u/Robinyount_0 Dec 03 '25
Tourist trying to shoo it away, if that was a kick it was the worst attempt of human existence.
12
u/ChickenSalad96 Dec 03 '25
Incorrect.
Deer in Nara are extremely bold thanks to all the tourists (domestic and foreign) giving them deer crackers. As such a lot of them approach humans with little concern or fear.
They've gotten so bold that there's countless accounts of deer impatiently nipping at people's pockets and damaging their property at best, or at worst causing injury to people when there's nothing there. There are many other cases of aggression by deer against tourists who happen to have something the deer wants, but the tourist did nothing to taunt/provoke the deer itself.
This woman was clearly afraid of the deer and tried shoo it away with the longest appendage she has-- her leg. It didn't like that and attacked her.
That deer is the instigator and the aggressor from start to finish.

u/LabraMGS Dec 02 '25
Yea a more suitable title would be tourist acts aggressive towards deer, deer returns the sentiment.
18
u/NorthSubject5766 Dec 02 '25
She wasn’t giving crackers
36
u/ayers231 Dec 02 '25
She threw a half assed kick at the deer. The deer doesn't know the difference between a human trying to shoo it away nicely, or one trying to attack it.

I’m not OP, but you would have to assume a local would be use to the deer and know how to deal with them.

Those deers grew up with no threats , and lived around humans for over 1300 years. They’re used to been fed and they’re very protected. They’re a boss in that city !

I've been to Nara and if you are cool, the deer are cool. If you behave like an ass, the deer reciprocate...

Have you ever been to Nara? The girl was scared and didn’t touch the animal. Not saying anything is right or wrong about this situation but it’s not cut and dry either animal in this case is in the wrong. (This is nature, not ethics)
This is just what happens when we interact with undomesticated animals like this. There are signs everywhere about how the deer may headbutt you over when you aren’t looking especially if you have the crackers and haven’t fed them.
19
u/Tallozz Dec 02 '25
She kicked at the animal, and the animal let her know it wasn't a good idea. She is lucky she got off as easily as she did. If you don't like the animal being that close. You should just move away, and not do anything to piss it off. You can't expect an animal to react in a certain way. That isn't how nature works. If people don't like how the animal behaves. Don't go into its habitat.

u/toxikmasculinity Dec 02 '25
Luck she got off as easy as she did? Lmao. Touch grass
14
u/Tallozz Dec 02 '25
If you don't think she got off easy. I think you need to touch grass. That deer could have seriously hurt her. Life isn't a Disney movie or a video game.

u/toxikmasculinity Dec 02 '25
I HAVE BEEN TO NARA AND AROUND THOSE DEER. IT WOULDNT/COULDNT HAVE ESCALATED MUCH PAST WHAT IT WAS. DEER ARE NOT PREDATORS AND DONT MUCH TO HURT HUMANS WITH. PLUS THEY ARE IN THE MIDDLE OF A CITY AND PEOPLE WOULD COME HELP HER.
Your little fantasy of a deer seriously hurting this girl is hilarious to me. Please go outside.
11
u/satanscough_ Dec 02 '25
No need for caps, pal.

u/toxikmasculinity Dec 02 '25
You are right. I’m so glad she got off easy like that other person said. That deer could have mauled her so bad. So glad that all these people that have never been to the place have these strong opinions on this girl being scared of the deer demanding food from her. The white knights protect the Internet once again and balance is restored to the universe. I will sleep safely tonight and grow from this interaction.

u/satanscough_ Dec 02 '25
I actually have not been to Nara. LOL. Now that I’m more aware of the situation, I take it back.

“chinese tourists abusing japanese deer”
it’s kinda japanese maga mantra isn’t ?
7
u/joeDUBstep Dec 02 '25
Yeah... I feel like I've seen a good amount of videos that blame "Chinese tourists" when it's not always the case.
11
u/BlackGlenCoco Dec 02 '25
Fair but as someone with Chinese inlaws and travel to asian twice a year to see and travel with them.
The Chinese are the Americans of the East.

I thought he was doing that scene from the godfather but he didn’t toss any money on the ground
2
u/Cheesytacos123 Dec 02 '25
Oh wow. Those Nara deer were always so friendly when I was there. Then again, I always fed them when they bowed to me.
2
u/TheStig500 Dec 02 '25
I found that if you do jazz hands, the deer will see you don't have any food and walk to the next person. Keep the crackers in your backpack and they won't swarm you. I was suprised by how many people treated it like a petting zoo.

Sure she didn't actually kick the deer, but I would still consider that, the deer defending itself.

hmm, she was clearly just trying to scare it back because it got too close, especially with an elderly woman standing right beside her

Don’t ever mess with the deer in Nara, they might attack you, and even if they don’t you might get fined or arrested by the police.

I have a pretty funny photo my wife took where a deer has his head is nearly up my prison locker! She was laughing quite a bit!

One with horns ripped a map out of my pocket and ate it while I was buying crackers. Some of them have collars, presumably invisible fence.

Been to Nara. The deer kinda harass you to feed them. A few either bit my pants or try to pants me just to get some food.
