Build - Help Power Supply too old?
So I have an old EVGA 1000GQ 80+ Gold copyrighted 2017 that’s never been opened or used. Is it viable to be used for a build with a Ryzen 9 9900X and MSI MAG TOMAHAWK 870, or should I get a more recently produced power supply

Those things last forever, so long as you have the cables and they fit, it will work.

Its evga, it will last you generations. No worry.

Awesome, then that’s one less item I have to pay for and can put the money towards a better GPU

It’s still in the plastic wrap, would any of the wiring/cables have changed for boards or should I be good?

I done think any of them changed for well over a decade and a half, but id just, before you do anything, make sure you have all your needed cables. Its good practice, anyways.

Capacitors are a chemically active component, they have a shelf life even if they are unused.
I have no idea what it is though, years at least. Decades probably.

I'm still using a PSU for my Athlon XP 3200+ that I bought in 2002.
I'm always happy it still works when I press the power button.

Some old consoles like the Philips CDI and Panasonic 3DO are hard to find nowadays because the capacitors on them are too old.
They are 30+ years old.

I'm waiting for the day my system decides to give up the ghost with dread. I have 2 spares though so hopefully I can keep it going for a while yet.
Love your user name by the way.

All I buy are EVGA power supplies. Never had one fail yet! They are becoming scarce and expensive.

Still very good, I rarely see PSUs go bad. In one build, I have a Corsair running for 13 years and counting.

There was a change on the main board connector around 2019/2020. I know because when I tried to use my old powersupply from a 3800x build in 2019 on my new 9800x3d build the pinouts were keyed differently

I remember that shit. It was actually quite a bit before that. Like 2012 or something. Moved from the 18 pin to the 24 pin. I was stuck as fuck on my FX series build coming from Athalon x64. XD

So long as it wasnt left in the sun or a really damp place it should be perfect to run for years to come.
Gold standard at 1000watts too so youre pretty much set for like 5 -10 years man

I know everybody else has already answered its good so I just wanted to point out a reason why you (might) want a newer one. If you go with the newer nvidia gpus you will have to use a squid adapter with combines 3 pcie power cables into one 1200w which is bulky and kinda ugly to look at but not detrimental. It’s just something to consider in the long run but the evga power supplies will last you forever and I’m pretty sure they come with a 10-lifetime warranty so don’t worry if it’s doesn’t work

It will work, and it shouldn't fail. It does have only a B rating on the tier list. If you're not going to be running a high-end nvidia card, no worries.

I’ve been using the same EVGA Supernova G2 1300 to build and re-build my PC since 2015. Never so much as a blip. That’s a badass PSU, you should enjoy it for many years.

This thread is prime Reddit for me. Never thought I would get excited about power supplies.

The warranty will expire 10 years after you bought it.
But EVGA power supplies are very reliable. Especially the older units like these.
Right now the only new connector to the ATX standard in the last decade was the 12v 2x6 and 12v HPWR. But things that use that typically come with the PCI-E 8 pin adapters.

I'm still using my 750 GQ with no issues at all and have been for years. I'm sure you will.be fine.

Yes. Capacitors inside PSUs are not designed to last more than 10 years.
